Thread: Major? Spindle play
02/05/2023 10:36:13

I haven't seen lathes or welders on Vevor UK for quite a while now

I used to visit them regularly but gave up trying

Thanks guys.

My current Alibre homework

So you scale the pictures of the different views in their respective planes then start to draw the bits you want

I had put my Drummond dwg on hold because it would take lots of work to run about and measure it all up

if you can take your own pictures then you only need one measurement and the rest will fall into place because you've got all the aspects you need and you only need to scale your jpegs

Only got this fixed an hour ago, has never worked for me previously, its probbly ok for most folk

I finally got this to work by apparently clicking "legacy display" to disable it (didn't work anyway), then unclicking legacy to make it ok (yes I know, weird)

Thread: 3D pipe runs in CAD
01/05/2023 16:34:28

Wow

and that interface is a whole new universe

01/05/2023 16:06:30

Sorry, didn't realise you're just practicing

I've realised the limitation of Atom is proper 3D drawing which the more pricey software allows

3D drawing may also unleash our mojo where things like furniture design and architecture are concerned

01/05/2023 15:41:42

I would think that the more pricey 3D sketch software would be vastly superior for navigating around say a loco cab with micro piping

All your pipe turns are 90 degree 2D sketch moves, to go 3D I would have to start setting up fancy planes at fancy angles instead of the click-click of 3D working

You're doing fine from the looks of things

Just keep plugging away, things get easier and easier until one day you realise that you don't even view CAD as a challenge anymore

It's actually a lot like learning to drive, at the very start you wonder how anyone ever manages to do it, then after enough practice you're getting competent, then one day you're an old hand at it

Posted by Nigel Graham 2 on 01/05/2023 13:42:24:

This was one of my own attempts.

That's how you get ahead of the curve, set a task and do your own stuff

CAD is pretty cool in that you can set your own homework

Thread: 13A plus USB adapter : not recommended
30/04/2023 10:47:16

I use my usbs for battery charging and bought a top of the line job out of morrisons a few years ago for 30 quid

Reason being if I go out and forget to switch it off it should be ok

If the real deal in its package is a tenner now then they're a bargain

The other thing I got was a plug in charger, still full price today but worth it once you've gt one

That's where 3D scanners come in handy... but a decent one costs thousands

29/04/2023 11:59:11

Looks like 3D sketch which is in the expert and pro versions

If they'd put that into Atom 3D it would have been CAD bargain of the year

Another method in Alibre, is to Loft using two rectangles and four 3D Guide curves (straight lines in this case). These guide curves connect each corner (Vertex ?) of the first rectangle, to the corresponding twisted corner on the second rectangle.

Note that this may not work in versions earlier than V25.

Edited By Nick Hughes on 29/04/2023 10:52:28

Have you done that in Alibre Atom 3D Nick?

I notice sometimes the mouse cursor doesn't want to grab the line/feature....

That is the software "catching up", some of it is instant, some of it needs a fraction of a second or so to get going and you need to hold your mouse click a teeny bit longer than usual

There are a lot of numbers whirring away behind the scenes to make the on-screen magic happen

28/04/2023 23:54:52

Nice one Ches. Prepare to become addicted once those basics are mastered.

Don't get hung up on micro details like threads, create a master metric and a master imperial sheet

make basic stuff from old ME plans in imperial and metric, drop the "parts" together into "assembly" put them together and watch your virtual reality creations move

Awesome

Getting close with Alibre, external fillets and chamfers omitted 'cos I can't be bothered

You can probably hollow it out with that shell command too (...must have a keek at that one...)

Nice, but cleaning up the welds is going to be a pain. That's what apprentices are for!

35A and 17volts using tackwelds would do it, in-out in-out

I am losing heart rapidly. Another 3D CAD programme too difficult even at a very basic level?

Totally don't give up. Just keep plugging away and once you start to "get it" all your CAD fantasies will come true, the final result is worth the effort

For the money Alibre Atom does it all for a hobby engineer, all the basics, plus 3D construction/drawing movement to test tolerances etc

I'm 4 months in and I have:

Built a replica warco magnum bender

Turned my 2 ton arbour press into a 5-10 ton press via the Dake system

Currently doing sheet metal die design and experimenting

Instead of trying to figure stuff out in the garage you log-on and build it in Alibre, it does 95% of the job in virtual reality and then you hit the ground running when you step into the workshop, cut this, turn this, drill that, you've already done it and figured out the machining/construction route/pitfalls and you can see most of the sneaky real world problems before they actually happen

I'm pretty snookered after 4 hours in the workshop but I can do 12 hours of CAD, current stuff, project stuff, reviewing stuff. Virtual reality model engineering is fun and very gratifying.

Thread: Grit value for honing carbide tools
27/04/2023 15:02:02

I've only ever used a green grit wheel because if I made my carbide too sharp it was prone to chipping at the cutting edge

However, you have a very good machine and if your carbide tools are of sufficient quality you may just get away with it, but it's usually only hss which gets the razor edge treatment
