Organising stuff is always a good way to cope and yields a positive result, especially in a workshop, because it makes doing your model engineering tasks easier Chucking stuff out that needs cleared helps too, we always need more space |

I've had it my whole life and after switching jobs every 5-7 years for decades realised it was some sort of genetic thing perhaps connected with my dads OCD Total commitment until I figured something out... then not really too interested anymore because all that was left of it was the irritating monkey politics He would collect stuff like a massive original jazz collection... then dump it at a record shop for a few hundred quid and start collecting opera stuff Fortunately, real world engineering is a never ending problem covering a vast spectrum of subject matter so there's always something to squeeze our braincells Being "afraid" of doing stuff tends to be anxiety related but I've never really been a sufferer, my dad has it really bad and wakes up shaking I have noticed a fair number of folk around me have developed it since the pandemic and some have quite severely restricted their lives compared to previously Thing is, nothing has really changed in the real world since before the pandemic and I try to explain that but it doesn't appear to help for anxiety sufferers I just compare us with the pre-war brigade I grew up with and how they got through everything by bashing on regardless, two world wars, the great depression, spanish flu, no healthcare, no antibiotics, slum housing, 4 to a room etc so I consider myself to be super-lucky no matter what happens nowadays Edited By Ady1 on 07/05/2023 09:09:16 |

If I don't know what to do and everything appears uninteresting I tend to visit Wiki and end up opening all sorts of pages to different things Ended up stuck on Roman history until about 3am the other night, (what a bunch of hooligans) |

Thread: Alibre - A First Attempt |
06/05/2023 10:52:34 |
Nigel One of my "homework" jobs was a scale drawing of my arbour press which is a relatively simple tool Now I use that drawing for building all my modifications and for solving any problems no need to go scrabbling about in the workshop trying to build stuff any more, just sip a cup of tea and ponder the task in comfort while at my computer desk, then draw the idea-parts, bring them in and check for fitments and build issues. I've already been saved from a few wasted jobs/ideas. When I go back into the workshop I know exactly what's needed (well 90% of it anyway) The time spent learning to use Alibre now really does save you huge amounts of time and effort later on In this example the square adapter on the nose of the ram for holding the former is too big and fouls the sheet metal being folded to 90 degrees in the die press, so that's a dead plan but Alibre meant I never had to make it to find out it was a failure Edited By Ady1 on 06/05/2023 10:59:40 |

I know that bit thanks, and if you change the aspect to figure out which way round you actually are, then click reset-view it returns to the first position, which IS useful |
06/05/2023 10:16:50 |
I assumed that the view cube was unavailable in sketch mode So you have to right-click-hold to check your aspect once things get more involved It's one of the programs weaknesses, you ask for a surface, click sketch, and it flips and turns into a totally different aspect It's not just you Nigel, its one of those things all users have to learn to deal with Posted by Nigel Graham 2 on 05/05/2023 23:59:49: Perhaps I'll leave threads and concentrate on more important aspects.
Totally the way to go, I just bang in holes, 6mm 8mm 10mm whatever, and focus on the main job At assembly time I line up the holes Threads just consume CAD memory and do nothing useful Edited By Ady1 on 06/05/2023 10:27:36 |

The assembly bit makes all the grind worth it Nigel, especially since you have credible movement Stick at it, keep your chin in and keep swinging |

I always anchor the main body/base first and then bring in the parts |
03/05/2023 14:21:58 |
That's why I got Alibre Atom, the assembly-movement function takes you to the next level and it works really well |

Posted by Nigel Graham 2 on 03/05/2023 10:09:38: Though I noticed that in Alibre, closing the file, and re-opening it, sometimes cleared the jam. I wonder if I am jamming it by repeated button-presses stacking up a lot of hidden data. Going back and forward causes issues and I do what you do, save the file and reopen it to clear the cache |

Sometime you have to "force" an item into its position by using the constraints in two stages First stage you get it into a basic ok position Then you DELETE those constraints and it will stay in its new position/direction Then apply the constraints you wanted originally It can be a bit fiddly, but it works eventually Just another skill you have to master Nigel, practice practice practice |
