Their older operating systems are very simple and reliable compared to now My W7 64bit pro is great and never updates I used XP pro until 32 bit systems fell behind I suppose it's like having an older Golf GTI or Japanese car, "out of date" but still does a good job |
Thread: Alibre Atom 3D. Another question. |

I just had a look at that, made a part etc. But it wouldn't move, seemed to be permanently anchored Sooo? Delete it in assembly. Then pull the saved item in via insert design and its fine Edited By Ady1 on 15/05/2023 17:59:04 |

The system didn't mind when industrial progress killed off working class jobs but this industrial progress is going to kill off millions of middle class jobs Germany had millions of angry unemployed middle class people in the 1930s |

As with man made global warming I'm still a sceptic Computers are amazing at mimickry and data analysis but original thought and real world solutions? If AI really is the "next level of intelligence" then we only need to ask it how to solve world poverty Most of the jobs humans do are mimickry When you combine your mimickry experience into something original then that's intelligence "Standing on the shoulders of giants" is intelligence evolutiony Edited By Ady1 on 14/05/2023 10:42:32 |
Thread: Alibre Atom 3D. A question to those who use it. |
12/05/2023 09:19:32 |
I did the long winded boss to cut system but it's very prone to errors, the shell system is instant and muppet proof If the object is simple then the boss to cut system is ok Edited By Ady1 on 12/05/2023 09:27:48 |

The Alibre Atom route I found was you need the original part so I built the piston They have a function called shell so I hollowed it out to 0.1mm Then I filled in the original piston body space and this is the half section which can be mounted into a bounding box. Took me slightly longer than 5 minutes though lol No doubt things would improve with more practice Edited By Ady1 on 12/05/2023 03:36:16 |

I'll have a squirrel about to see if there's a sneaky workaround Chances are it would have to be done the hard way |

I used that approach in LBSCs BAT The downside of workarounds is they tend to take longer but do get there What we seem to have with Alibre Atom is software that would have been a top dollar product 10 or 15 years ago and now they are using it as an entry level product at what I would consider to be a bargain price, particularly since it's buy now keep forever and all my files are my own property What I hadn't realised before becoming moderately competent is that Atom starts you down the road of project management, you can start considering bigger wider solutions that previously my limited brainpower would never have considered possible for a lone hand. You can break larger problems into smaller solutions and bring those solutions together into something that actually makes sense, or it doesn't and you have to try another way All sounds a bit high browed ugh but it means I'm not cutting metal or wasting my time, I'm only playing in my virtual reality workshop which makes things 10 times faster than my real workshop (well 100 times actually) |

Can you show us a picture of a final product? Sometimes workarounds are possible |
Thread: 5mm square hole |
11/05/2023 17:30:02 |
You can make your own broach with some 5 mm hss Grind it across the flats using the round edge of the grinding wheel and turn the corners into teeth First drill a round hole of 5mm to get rid of most of the metal then use an arbour press or a good vice to shove it through, makes a bang when it clears If you take this route test it on a bit of scrap first, you may get the cut slug tearing out of the bottom of the hole and messing up the last bit Don't forget to put a support at the bottom with a bigger hole to let the broach pass right through

These programs are advertised and sold as easy for everyone to use. That should be added to the list of The Great Lies of All Time. When they click for you then they are quite easy, but it depends on how your brain logic works This is lucky-me from clueless 4 months ago to.. but it's not just about pretty pictures Suddenly you can tackle entire projects in glorious 3D scale drawings So the gain is definitely worth the pain Who knows in a couple of years the ME magazine could be flooded with new projects from its new army of CAD users and poor Neil is begging us all to stop submitting stuff |

I always use the snap grid, and even if it means changing the dimension by 1mm I always try to do divisible circles, 8mm, 12mm etc Anything that makes things easier faster and simpler I embrace |

There's plenty of old imperial micrometers in decent nick on ebay that do to 0.001 which is 0.025mm I use an old moore and wright 965 which you can get for 10 to 15 on ebay |
08/05/2023 17:33:16 |
For micron type whittling in the lathe I use that green grit paper Its a situation where a proper micrometer would be a serious help Fitments like that need time and patience because the surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned each time Edited By Ady1 on 08/05/2023 17:37:24 |

Yes he's into sketch but only using select for everything I've reached a point I really need get things down on paper - manually or by CAD - before wasting yet more metal, electricity and hours on endless re-working. Nigel you're doing exactly the right thing by going for CAD in this situation btw Edited By Ady1 on 08/05/2023 17:50:19 |

He's not even getting to draw/sketch/edit mode, just clicking about randomly with select |
08/05/2023 03:22:45 |
Did you not just make a cover with a right angled cutout then put it all together in assembly? It will attach at any angle you want Try drawing it in a single file and you'll go bodmin getting there Edited By Ady1 on 08/05/2023 03:27:22 |

An awful lot of smart successful folk get bored and turn to the booze then get stuck in a rut Did all my boozing in my earlier days and got bored of it, so had moved on before it could catch me out For socialising I drag everyone down to the pub quiz. It can take quite a bit of effort and disturbs the normal routine but no-one ever regrets it The other biggie is a dog. Having an annoying responsibility to drag you out of yourself is not always appreciated but is very useful for keeping you going over the longer term I suppose I'm saying one solution is "everything in moderation" Edited By Ady1 on 07/05/2023 11:42:51 |
