Thread: Wrapping a swept profile around a cylinder in Alibre Atom |

Found an easier fast dirty way of doing it because it was really bugging me, this covers 50% of the cylinder Use the sweep function with a plane on the top surface and cut it DEEP so your full cut depth is achieved at the edges Then fill it back up inside to your required depth with an extruded cylinder boss and voilla! a perfect depth cut along the entire length The geometrics of the cut aren't perfect except along the centreline but its a handy workaround Edited By Ady1 on 27/09/2023 04:34:57 |

Well, I've only gone and done it! Or rather, Jason showed me how and I implemented his suggestions. Well done you. That was a tough one. |

Nice solution Jason (my brain only slightly exploded) |

Can Alibre Atom now do sketch wrap? I'm stuck on V25 |
26/09/2023 13:49:32 |
Looks like an awkward one that really needs the 3D sketching function Us poverty stricken Alibre Atom serfs can do a workaround by using multiple planes, but it's a slow process I've done the first plane and cut, then a plane at 20degees(?) would do my next cut etc All very fiddly |

Fixed steadies are awesomely useful once you've made one, especially for big long pain in the neck jobs Also allows you to use 100% of your lathe bed |

And I hope that drawing is an assembly of parts, not a single part If you want to revolve an extrusion use the circular feature pattern Edited By Ady1 on 26/09/2023 11:36:51 |

If it's a cylinder it has an axis you can revolve the profile sketch around So use revolve boss, not sweep and start with a simple square sketch, make sure it revolves, then edit the square into the complicated drawing you require
edit: All looking very nice btw As David says, you may have to break the part down into a revolve boss and then a pattern cut Edited By Ady1 on 26/09/2023 11:31:28 |

Some interesting snippets on youtube but nothing you wouldn't already have found One picture with a train showed a wheel so it must have been on iron castors before settling upon solid uprights for the train crossing Edited By Ady1 on 25/09/2023 23:05:36 |
Thread: 'Cutting Edge Engineering' attempts to repair a large casting |

So much cracking basically means end of life for the metal At 5.46 the entire boss is trying to rip itself out of the casting so the metal in the metal casting is actually failing to deal with the loads If he'd fixed it perfectly to 200% another bunch of cracks would appear just beyond his perfect fix If the machine isn't too old then it's a bad casting I've seen it with bad steel, cracks appearing magically in the middle of a plate under load edit: If a lot of users start getting this problem then the manufacturing company has possibly taken the thin-ness of the casting to it's limits to save on costs and vehicle weight It's also possible that modern castings have a built in design life, making it a consumable, unlike the old days when they were made to last 100 years Edited By Ady1 on 25/09/2023 10:51:36 |
