Thread: How do I make a steam operated valve? |
11/07/2016 19:26:13 |
Ive tried anf failed with relieving and brasso, it was much improved but still leaked. So what alternatives are there? I see 3 way valves on ebay but im loathed to buy one. They are cnc machined at high speed and I simply cannot emulate that speed or accuracy. This is the last snag to my loco being complete! PTFE or derlin perhaps?

I got rid of mine as I found it lousy for cutting steel - it had the correct cutter, just didnt like to cut! |

last year i converted the whole house to led after working out that the payback was 6 months and then a good saving. You can only use dimmable if your lamp is designed for them, otherwise they will either just flicker or flash on and off - the ones I tried did this! The output rating on the box might well be correct but if replacing dichroic go for the high output as they seem a bit weak otherwise. Weve got lots of globe bayonet bulbs and the light is brilliant compared to fillament bulbs. In UK screwfix now have a very good, cheap selection. |

have any of you achieved this level of seal? It doesn't leak much as is but its only a machine finish. Any suggestions as to lapping compound or grade? Thanks |

I have made 4 x steam operated cylinder valves and a lever which in one position supplies steam and in the other position vents the pressure line to air. Its essentially two discs rotating against each other with an airway machined into one.My problem is that it leaks from between the two halves, even when a lot of pressure is applied. I machined them with power cross feed, sharp tool, slow setting. So how do I stop it leaking? Some form of lapping operation perhaps? |

Hi - im a bit confused, what do you mean by boiler shell? Is it a boiler or a boiler cover perhaps? |
26/06/2016 20:17:22 |
Using 40% silver is just asking to make things difficult. You will find the extra expense of 55% means a much nicer, easier job which doesnt end up in the bin. Sure I use 40%, but only with oxy. |

So its not just me then! My 3 jaw comes off easy but the 4 jaw is a complete nightmare to break free. Both have very free running threads and I keep them lubricated! |
Thread: Model engineering not so expensive a hobby! |

She might not remember the days out but she is learning and enjoying at the same time as we are. And there are my memories too. It is indeed three years ago! Yesterday she was bitten by a vulture - only a passing nip (as opposed to tearing the flesh from her limbs!) but how many other kids have had such an experience, three or otherwise? She can name every animal in the zoo unlike a familt who were pointing out the tapiar and explaining to their children that it was a hyena like in Jungle book...I kid you not |

Thread: Model engineering not so expensive a hobby! |

Ive always thought model engineering was quite an expensive hobby - until I started taking my daughter for days out. Two adults and a 3 year old, one day at the zoo (chester) just short of £70 for entry, £30 for food, £20 for fuel!! Same for most similar attractions. I can buy a lot of brass for that and it will keep me occupied for weeks. Just need to get daughter a lathe and the savings will be huge! |
Thread: PTFE piston rings |
16/06/2016 19:24:42 |
I tried this a few years back with bad results. The rings expand after machining and even more so when they get hot . Piston siezed in bore, engine thrown under bench...still there somewhere!

Thanks - so if they were at say 45 degrees to ground, with the ball having to move up hill to close the valve do you think they would still work? |
06/06/2016 21:19:49 |
Hi - my question is, do they have to be parallel with the ground to work or will they work in any orientation i.e. where the ball would have to move against gravity to close the valve? |

Sppeaking from experience here...if you make it to the spec on JB's website AND get everything perfectly in line I am sure it will pull the coals right out of the box! However, if you dont get everything perfectly in line it simply doesnt work. Nearly isnt good enough. My 7 1/4 went from very poor to OMG |
