Thread: Soldering a front tube plate
19/10/2021 21:31:34

strangely its not on the cup website - but thats where i get mine from - I bulk order so dont go via the website

19/10/2021 17:33:55

The flux is available from the cup twins... I use it as a base and mix other fluxes with it to get the grade I like. It lasts a very long time and goes a very long way. Regarding the video - putting my neck on the tracks here but it is a video of how not to solder a boiler. Follow it at your perril - nuff said. Think Eutectic.

Thread: Oxy propane welding kit
19/10/2021 17:29:29

My reason for not using acetylene anymore was the ramifications of having a workshop fire - a large human exclusion zone is put into place lasting i think two days. Lots of businesses would not be able to trade and lots of familied forced out their home - not something I could live with were it ever to happen.

BOC and Air liquide will no longer allow you to load acetylene into a car - has to be a commercial vehicle with an all steel cab partition.

Thread: Soldering a front tube plate

Yes, maintain a slight interferance fit. There will be plenty of so called gap for the solder to penetrate the joint. Whatever you do dont try to manufacture a gap. How can I be sure of this? I make boilers for a living and have never had a joint faiulre - ever (having made hundreds of them). Anyone wanting to learn is very welcome to come visit me as Pendle Steam Boilers in sunny Burnley.

So does Nigel at Pendle Steam Boilers....but he wouldnt recomend them to the inexperienced either. The hobby bottles are useless for a 5" boiler. Even with full size bottles a very large nozzle is needed plus a big propane torch (this is why I dont often do big boilers these days) and a lot of either experience or luck.

Thread: Unwanted Taper

thats a lot so im guessing your tail stock is not correctly dialed in. If I ever get taper it is always my tailstock alignment which it to blame.

Thread: TIG welded copper boilers
14/09/2021 11:56:42

As an ex coded welder and boiler maker I have made a few with tig. The main advantage is that there is no phlanging required. Its a lot easier to set up and a lot cheaper to build. There are no downsides other than they look different. On the other hand the welder is very expensive - think minimum 500 amp water cooled industrial - nothing that you can buy at machine mart! You also know that every joint has the penetration you have put into it.

Thread: Fowler Z7S Steel Boiler
12/09/2021 20:30:27

The steel boiler will be a lot stronger than a copper one, the problem is that whilst the cu boiler will not lose its strength over time the steel one will corrode and evenyually fail, or rather be deemed as a test fail. Tensile strength of generic carbon steel is between 1.5 and 2 x that of copper, so 5mm of steel far exceeds the strength of 6mm copper. Although my business now only produces small copper boilers there was a time when we made 7 inch gauge steel boilers. These were a doddle to make. Depending on your boiler tester an alternative test is to complete the boiler welding and present it to a certified NDT professional - if they issue you with a cert (ultrasonic test cert) you are safe knowing that every inch of every weld has been tested.

thanks all - i managed to see that it says 40-100-70, pretty sure the spindle gear is 20 so do i now need 20 - idler - 70?

09/09/2021 20:43:53

there apear to be two tables. table for general screw cutting 14tpi says top-40 mid-100 bot 70 Lever-A. Another plate says for whitworth and bsf same but mid is 60. Surely tpi is the same regardless of thread profile?

09/09/2021 19:53:52

using that c hart with the 3 speed gearbox i can get close to 14 tpi by using the closest metric equivalent but can it be made exactly - never done this before

09/09/2021 19:46:55

thanks Ady - that is indeed the thing i needed - having a bad day!

09/09/2021 19:46:03

forgive me, i thought it was all the info needed. I need to know what changewheel no of teeth and positiion to cut 14 tpi on the L5.
