PSI ? I dare not think what the metric equivalent is, let alone use it in any meaningful way. My boiler calcs are all in psi, lengths in inches and I grew up in a metric world. There is room for both....just dont tell the american space telescope makers!

Thread: MACH 3 Display Question |

as Jason says, go bigger so you can have the jog screen at the side and not on top of the screen - very helpful You can download mach3 free and get used to it in sim mode |

Hi John. I too am in Lancashire and am not native to these parts. I also run a little company called Pendle Steam Boilers and have owned a fair few lathes and the like over many years. Welcome to the forum and if you need help with anything just pm me. |
Thread: Collet Chuck or not ? |
26/03/2019 09:20:30 |
A word of caution....I bought a cheap collet holder and set oft bay via china for my mill. Great at holding things rigid but a lot of runout...dont be tempted!

Thread: combined BOB with drivers or seperate? |
14/03/2019 20:01:43 |
Thanks all - Jason, thats similar to what I had in mind but the board has the drivers built in. I think direct USB is quite a new thing. Ive also looked at ethernet connected boards but im way out of my comfort zone with those. Im also wondering if the new boards will run with windows 7 64bit. The simulator has no problems with it. |
Thread: Vertical Boiler - blower? |

Incomplete combustion is something we see with small burners, just put a CO meter near one, be they ceramic, mesh or brass. All three have different burn characteristics. I use solid brass in my commercially availible boilers as they produce the most heat, they are quiet fierce compared to ceramic. I only use ceramic in the twin flue 5" boiler as their sublime nature makes for much easier firing of both flues at the same time. A well designed burner needs no chimney as all of the combustion products are supplied from outside the burner. You will see slits in the sides of PSB burners but these have absolutely nothing to do with the combustion process. Invariably if you have your gas mix too rich a blue flame will be seen where it exits the chimney - check with lights off as it can be difficult to see. Whilst a more stable flame is seen when a chimney is present I can produce effective boilers without a chimney. An option is to have the steam return plumbed into the chimney but this is for authenticity rather than efficiency and i have not noticed any improvment in output.. My advice is...run exit steam through chimney but there should be no reason to add a stand alone blower, especially in a boiler so small. |

all depends on what your firing it with - gas=no, coal=definately. Ive never seen any coal fired boiler without one...and ive made and seen a few.

Looking for a USB breakout board to run Mach3 and see that we can buy a control board with integrated driver. Anyone tried the new integrated boards? Something tells me to stick to separate parts. |
Thread: Chimneys & Steam Pipes : Copper or Brass : Why ? |
08/03/2019 15:31:36 |
For the record in the UK under current club rules it is perfectly acceptible to make boilers out of brass. They are much stronger and thus can be made much lighter than copper, and are a lot tougher to work with. I do get asked to make boilers frombrass from time to time but dont like making them! Bushes are all bronze.

Thread: Round top inner firebox |
05/03/2019 21:01:56 |
Im mid build on a couple of 5" gauge Sweetpea boilers which have totally round fire boxes. No stays of any kind for the firebox tube is a massive bonus - both end plates are stayed. If the top of a conventional type loco boiler is half round no stays are needed in it (joing sides and ends stayed as usual) but as stated previously you lose a lot of tube space compared to a square section plate. |
Thread: Nine months in the acid bath! |
05/03/2019 20:50:16 |
Whilst making a 2" scale boiler for a traction engine mid 2018 I missplaced one of the inner firebox plates, so made a new one and carried on. Yesterday I was forced to extract a boiler from the acid bath by hand (vets full arm glove) and to my suprise came across the lost plate laying on the bottom. I had always wondered what effect long term acid soaking would have on copper. Anything over a day with brass is very bad news - im using 30% Sulphuric Acid so its strong stuff. The plate in question has a little crystalisation of acid salts on its surface but other than that was in perfect condition - I wont be using it but I wasnt expecting it to look as well as it does. |
