I wonder if you have missed the point of the cartoon?

By the way before you get puzzled by the headstock bore if it seems to have an obstruction or you are wondering what Morse taper it is note that some came with an insert to take 8mm watchmakers' collets. It is removable but might be best leave in situ as one seldom really needs to insert a MT in the headstock.
You will need access to another late to make chuck backplates as they just never are going to appear on ebay and it is an unusually fine thread. Probably best t o run it off a variable speed industrial sowing machine motor.

An ideal size for clockmaking, boat engines, and locos up to G1.

Thread: Whats the best material to withstand impact?
17/05/2023 21:50:36

A couple of points wrt PETG that have just been raised on the gaugeone3Dcircle is that as it prints at a hgher temp than PLA it can give problems with warping off the bed so an enclosure is to be recommended to keep it all warm. Then having solved the adhesion problem it can be too good, to the extent of being impossible to get off a glass bed.
So do some research.

If you are just after making a box then nothing beats wood.

Check your town for a flooring/carpet company. I have a local one that is continually filling a skip with offcuts of new carpet and wood flooring. With such a small space I could easily just change the carpet every week instead of sweeping.

Be aware that although it seems dry when you are in there breathing more often for longer periods damp will condense in the darker corners.

That is an absolutely ludicrous waste of material. Mass production jig instead of learning what can be done with a standard lathe. Typical youtube stretch it out and blow it up to make a video.

Thread: Workshop floor advice please
14/05/2023 11:16:34

My comment about leaving time was not about the strength but moisture as the excess in the concrete evaporates. Also if not dry any rubber based coating might come adrift as water can't get out.
Maybe consider a wood solution still with electric underfloor heating panels driven from a few solar panels on teh garage roof.

Since you need to let the concrete dry out for a few months you have time to start collecting a lot of pallets and stripping them to provide about 3 layers under a top of chipboard/ply and lino.

The Exeter DMES had an outing to our local steam engine (model) trader, Berrybrook Steam A fantastic display of Traction engines being reworked or ready for sale from Mamod up to 6" and their full sized one in steam which at teh end of the evening was driven onto a low loader to go to a show at Trago over the weekend. The truck was facing down a bit of a hill so it meant some skilful driving to get up the ramp then stop on the down slope and you know what sort of brakes a TE has.
Then on to a carvery with a dozen of the club made for a nice, if expensive evening.

Thread: Syncronome Clock magazine article

Thanks for your intervention John I seem ot have access to Synchronome1 at groups.io too.

!987 'An Electric Master Clock' 14 parts from Feb 87 but a pause after the clock is complete with the last 3 from March 88 covering the slave.

Unfortunately my copies are 250 miles away - if only you had asked yesterday.

There is the Synchronome1 group on groups.io but he keeps ignoring me when I ask to join. You may have better luck. Also the Facebook Synchronome group didn't like me as I didn't know the secret handshake. However the mysterious (because it doesn't come up on a search on groups.io) electric-clocks group gave me access in minutes and they do have some some members from this forum.

Thread: Bulkhead Penetrators (Getting a good vacuum seal)

Flange and seal on outside so that the pressure is compressing it not trying to push it out of the gap..
Can't see why you need a thread sealant. You should design out any threads that might in other lives need sealing. The sealant is likely to outgas for months after which it will be dried out and crack.
When I worked on satellites traces of silicone furniture or car polish were out demon but this might only apply to ultra high vacs.

Thread: David George's Retracting Toolholder

How about a swing clear operating on the rear upside down (for normal threads) with a release trip. The cutting force would then lift it off the cut as well as having a spring to throw it back out of the runout groove.

I take it you get NTP over the internet. is that cable modem, landline or mobile? You might like to run a parallel ping test to see how that is varying with your NTP data. The internet was never designed to send time critical data and is only kept vaguely in line because gamers whine so much about ping times,

edit - you could also mess your head up by comparing NTP from different servers, and mobile v other modem.

BTW we are assuming the geometry ensures distance moved by the arm equals distance moved by the tool. Otherwise we are back to 'a tad' and one could make small adjustments by inserting bits of paper under the screw contact point. What is the thickness of MEW pages?
