So is the Cowells crossslide thicker?

Thread: raglan 5

If you need 14dp use Drummond wheels and make a boss to fit.
As well as cut plastic gears nowadays you can get/make 3D printed gears.

Sad that it got into that state. Once it was the pride and joy of one of our brothers, possibly traceable from the serial number. Imagine him saving for it, placing the order and opening the box once delivered. Perhaps eh made some engines that are already with someone else, then he became ill and couldn't get into the shed to play with it, then maybe the roof leaked and neither he nor his family noticed.

Thread: Cast brass

The tabletop furnaces are for jewelers and use small (thinner) crucibles.
Bronze is easier if the design - appearance allows as it does not give off fumes,
We have one person in the cub who does aluminium and I have been collecting stuff to start casting when I retire.

On my list which may be relevant to Andrew is spandrels (for your next clock). I'm thinking 3D printing will make the patternmaking easier as fancy designs could be imported to CAD for incorporation into a personalised set.

Thread: Lidll

Are the 18v and 20v batteries actually those voltages? It seems typical Lion batteries like the 18650 are 3.6v each so how do you get a 2v difference between packs? And 16v?
Simple maths ... 3.6, 7.2, 10.8, 14.4, 18.0, 21.6. So the 16v and 20v don't fit in the sequence. Of course the individual batteries have a range so is it a question of the marketing bending things a bit?

No, but also check whether either one includes the reversing gear which I recall is disproportionately expensive.

Thread: Adjusting the horizontal mill
02/01/2022 14:34:15

Calculations
Speed of tooth through metal = RPM x pi x diameter.
If the diameter is in inches your speed is of course in inches so by convention measure it in feet.
The number of teeth doesn't matter for this bit. target for mild steel is somewhere between 100 and 200 ft/min. Us amateurs will be in less of a hurry than the professionals and you might want to have flood coolant for the higher rates.

Movement of the table is a separate consideration from the above, which can seem odd but it is.
Here number of teeth matter, but diameter doesn't.
So RPM x No of teeth gives you the number of cuts per minute.
Each cut is say 4 thou but we want to work in inches or feet - so 0.004 in.
That gives you RPM x Teeth x cut which is the feed speed in inches/minute you need to move at to compare with the rates your mill feed provides.

If you are winding the handle manually you probably wan to convert it to inches per second so divide by 60, then multiply by the tpi of your leadscrew. Then you really get a feel of how fast it is and remember if you wobble in your turning you will get grabs or rubbing.

All this can be applied to vertical cutters too and remember not to climb mill on an old machine.

(now I'm off to find the manuals for my machine as I'm not sure I've been going as quick as I should)

Thread: Rockwool insulation
02/01/2022 12:17:43

The paper will have been treated with chemicals that reduce its flamability. By putting it at the bottom it is also encased between the rockwool and plaster so by the time it gets near a flame the wood laths and beams will be well away.
As for vapour barrier phooey total advertising bullshit. Firstly you don't want a vapour barrier at that point as the moisture is supposed to go through the insulation and evaporate off the top - otherwise your bedroom will be damp. Secondly as the insulation and its paper is in strips down between the joists the vapour just goes round the edge. For a vapour barrier to work it has to be really airtight, to the point that if say using plastic sheet on the inside of your shed (the more normal query on here) you absolutely have to tape over any joints or it becomes ineffective. Moisture problems due to vapour are not like a quick leak in a rainstorm, they are effects that build up over years so the smallest hole can be a problem.

As to foil insulation - well it gets tested in very controlled and hence artificial conditions which are nothing like real life so it meets building regulations and is a effective s the proverbial chocolate teapot.

Thread: Adjusting the horizontal mill
01/01/2022 23:25:41

Hang on , isn't 400mm/min faster ie about 16in per min.

But as your calculations have shown if you have that many teeth you have to move it fast to keep the 4thou per tooth. Since you don't want to drop below 2 thou per cut to avoid rubbing if it isn't dead concentric you have to move the table at least 6in per min.
Larger mills run slower rpm but that is to enable big cutters to be used, no to slow production down. 250 rpm is about right for a 3in cutter. The only other limitation is the hp of the motor and can it do the work.

Thread: Is there too much choice?

Gosh if you think renewing annually is hassle just remember the days of paying each utility bill monthly or was it quarterly by cheque, and the milkman every week. Having to go to the bank to get cash to do shopping or buy lunch in the canteen, petrol etc.

Of course there are still a lot of people in the cash economy. You see that at the supermarket when they are queuing for the self service checkouts that haven't got the 'card only' sign up.

Interesting modification. What is the difference that causes the improvement? Can you perhaps rest the original saddle in place next to the new one to show readers what it all looks like?

Thread: Accurate hygrometer / humidity meter for the workshop
31/12/2021 22:29:11

Again, wet bulb. You only need to get one old fashioned high quality thermometer from a laboratory supplier and make alternate wet and dry measurements.

Alternatively just go with cheapo because after a while you will probably realise it is only the changes that are interesting and a rough value is enough. Ie when a warm damp front comes in you might be interested to see if he shed is damper even though you haven't opened the door, or if you 6 hour session sweating over hacksawing 500 widgets has made it worse.

Thread: DAB radio
30/12/2021 15:19:07

Following from David above. The TV licence provides FM radio 'free' but no revenue. Each FM frequency can be replaced with half a dozen DAB commercial signals, all paying for airspace, plus VAT on their advertising revenue, plus employing all those waste of space media studies graduates.

I have a DAB radio to get Test Match commentary on 5LSE but it is a pain to manipulate with all the buttons doing strange things and the display invisible unless the light is just right.

In theory if you place a dipole outside, use coax to get it inside to the problem area and simple put a dipole on that end too it will provide enough signal for a radio that is placed very close to it.

Thread: Do you "still" enjoy driving?
30/12/2021 13:19:05

My drive this morning (back with drills from Lidl) made me realise that some people need a little education about driving on the narrow roads shown in an earlier picture. Don't bunch up behind other cars. Leave 200-300 yards so that if there is traffic in the opposite direction you can all find passing places. Field gate an other passing places are usually only one car space,

The first 30 seconds shows the principle. You could just make a 2D template to put on the bed of the Turnado and attach a pointer to the cutter block.

With Martin's warning I rushed in and thought I was too late, but realised there ought to be a price tag and empty space at least. Second loop round saw the price tag as the black boxes were in a corner obscured by a heap of other drill sets.
Mysteriously the jam donuts were all sold out, as were the large waistband trousers. laugh

Thread: BOILER FEED WATER
30/12/2021 11:20:37

Since you shoud have a dehumidifier in your workshop that will give you a reasonable supply of good water. 'Demineralised' is not the same as distilled and has been reported probably on this forum to be a sort of ion substitute which may introduce worse things that the original chalk. Can't remember the details now. I'm sure we have a chemist in our wonderfully diverse readership.

An unfortunately frequent reason for our club members to 'retire' is because they no longer want to drive to the meetings at night. We have also moved some committee meetings to afternoons instead of evenings to avoid driving in the dark. However of course some people can get to both these venues entirely in LED and Sodium 'daylight'. They even put up signs to apologise to townies when parts of the M25 is not lit up like a sports stadium.
