Thread: Advertising for paid work

...a bit terse...?. Yeah ok.
One might say so was the magazine article.

Revue for cad software in this months MEW.

Pla..poly lactic acid
.if that helps

Mmm..so creating a 3d cad model of say a casting...
Might be frowned apon ( well copy right issues at least)...
Would creating such a model of the "original" part incur the same problem...
In my understanding the pattern in casting is not the one to one for the scale part anyway..shrinkage, draught angle..and then there is runners gates and risers. which I understand are a matter of "taste" of the foundry..
I would expect if one turned up with a pattern and asked the foundry to pour some metal , there heart would fall..just as when someone turns up with a part to copy one to one...
But increasingly if you turn up with a cad file...which they can massage to suit their proccess.. an expendable pattern can then be printed..or a die made...
Thus sorry for such a ramble. .maybe printing is a little way from being mature but the cad file is already welcome. .and in any case a required step.

Thread: Announcement re: Model Engineers' Workshop

Oh thats all clear then

No wonder people are so enthusiastic to submit work

And for what its worth.
Maybe dealing with the parallel subjects of cad and 3d modelling in general terms.. ( thats hard because like cnc it very rapidly becomes machine specific and of less relevance to people with different machines. .cf. myford gear change ratios. )

12/02/2014 16:04:33
Maybe in answer to original question.." How do we cover.."

.just like other subjects...
Based on submissions. .

Here's a thought ..
3d printer..
Microfoundry ( other brands are available)..
..=====> cast part..all at home...

Exactly. .

Btw..casting seldom produce the finish a model engineer would be content with..but this does not invalidate castings. .printed parts have their uses...even if as "castings" requiring futher finishing. .

..as to the "low" quality of reprap like machines

You may or maynot know that the reprap philosophy was a machine that could print a copy of itself.

Never attained or even attainable but a goal.

Some if not all hobby built machines are not ridgid in the way we would expect of a machine tool..
The demands are lower( "cutting" forces low (very low ) .. but repeatability is still low.

Now with fused filament printing..well the out side skin will be made from a filament which has a rounded section..thus a finite if low radius..typically 0.4 mm

Now this produces a characteristic groved finish .. imagine turning with a negative radius ( in wood turning terms a reed I think) tool at a suitable feed to screwcut .. I don't see that going away....
In any case would a "proper" printer/baby cnc mill be a suitable project...?..the drive electronics can be bought in..motors. .drives..printer micro...firmware ..
The pc end is a Download.. .

.no I am not volunteering. .

Thanks gor clearing that up...I thought the turbocad thing was an advertorial. . Now I know

HE30 anodises beautifully. .

.
Only thing is even pro anodising ( well the black dye) two batches can't be guaranteed to match.....
As to weather to home brew anodise..dependes on how much work is in part..if doing a handful to get one right is ok..

Thread: Between centres
09/02/2014 10:42:31
Well..the point is between centers you can remove and re start the work repeatedly. ..thus you remove job..move drive dog as required . Then carry on. ..
But cafeful planning of work flow helps...

Heat shrink as said before. ..but
As to the general questions of long hole drilling (thin wall) "plastic"..in the absence of coolant( or even with but more so)
then cut peck cut peck.repeat..each peck about half drill diameter or less....keep moving. ....clear swarf while its swarf not molten..oh and by peck I mean full withdraw..and brush off drill..

Thread: Open thoughts
07/02/2014 16:17:51
I think the thread title is OPEN THOUGHTS...
I for one like that there is room in this forum for such a thread.
I find opinions ofter differ from my own.
But I am with Blase Pascal on this one

And I find this more interesting than "just what thread was used on the third from the left nut on such and such a *hoo * hoo"
