Thread: A question about pulleys.

If little torque required..why not try a dimmer as speed control to motor..
Thread: Making a 5C Collet Chuck
11/06/2014 14:48:40
As you have identified this use would not be best practice.

The external threads on the 5C are fine..ie shallow.
( so are the internal)..
So not a good idea to end up with say only 4 threads engaged..if you were working with most and say the last one or two leads for adjustment then for light work maybe..the torque is via keyway and friction on the hardened cone of the chuck....

ER collets chucks are easier to make

...^... glen millar effect?

As to not knowing whar goes on inside the black boxes...I remember writing custom assembler to exploit undocumented op codes for both motorola and intel processors...and enjoying the re appearance of some of these (intel 808x) codes in the zilog z80.. ( explain that one)..
Best mnemonic ?...HBF..Hault and burst into flames..which is pretty much what it did. .
But yes you can't have a micro code knowledge of every chips innards but design from data sheet should work.......

Oh the subject of "renewable"...

One of the problems has and dare I say always will be storing the energy from when available to when its needed...
UK policy with feedin tariffs side steps the issue...don't store energy ..store money. ...
Ok from the individual point of view.. ( neglecting the ethics of the feedin bribe)...
But if enough people adopt this ( and probably all photovoltaic).. this will make worse one of the CEGB 's problems (or whatever they are called) of variation in DEMAND especially with micro generation. ..when the country as a whole needs most power (at say the end of corrie)....
And the cegb can't store energy by using feedin tariffs. ..
What is needed is a good way of storing mega watt hours of energy...short of say fossil fuels...
Thread: "high quality steels"
09/06/2014 23:15:08
The tunes you can play on the properties of steel are almost magical...like the transition temp also being the curie temp...like the distinctive colours in oxides yielding usefully different tempers....

Much more...still not bad from memory
..
Still fascinating that the misspelt+ XXXXX R+T ( to our eyes) form is "genuine"..rather than the +XXXXXXRT+ form
09/06/2014 15:28:22
This prompted by comment on steels available to victorians...in another thread..about threads...

I recently watched a video on youtube about the almost mythical VULTHBERT Sword...

These swords seem to be made from crucible steel rather than wrought iron..
Crucible steel was apparently not made in Europe in that time but was imported from the middle east.
To mark ( well that was reason given) the qualityof this sword the word +WULFBERT+ was inlaid ..before much of the forging of the blade
.this steel inlay was of a lower quality..

Ok so far. Now it seems of about 75 blades found marked some 5 are marked +wulber+t and the rest are as above..
There seems some debate over the meaning of the word but it would seem to be a proper noun..and the +xxxx form would have been used by a Christian abbot..

Best of all it appears that not all wulfbert were to the highest standard and some used local steel...
A case of dark ages counterfeit. ...
Funny the "good" ones are the ones with +WULFBER+T.. mark......

Mmmm...andrew...Powerop amp maybe...I made myself ( back when you sometimes needed to build test gear)..a dual channel 50 -0 -50 5 amp"programmable" power supply.. based on a power op amp... .nice chip..10 MHz gainbandwidth product...fine for me only asking gain of five and bw of 100 K....
.
I also remember the 700 series op amps..even has to do a lab at uni ob them making a replica in discreet transitors......
Ahh the nostalgia. .
But then again portability and design cycle is the thing...so code for fpga..is where it's at...most of the time...
There are still times requiring...finesse. ..
But for one off's ..well chuck a micro controller at it and get it done in code
Thread: Rotary table stepper software, anything free available?
07/06/2014 12:14:20
Depends on what you need from sw..
Since you have driver for stepper ( I take that from only needing direction and step)...

Well in the 'old' days under w98 you could readily write to printer ( parallel) port..so if your stepper driver is good for 5V levels inputs, a minimal interface would be three wires ..

Then you could count etc. Display angle ( and do step/angle arithmetic)....even do rate control.....

Thread: Gripping Drills in Chucks

Not keen myself on over extending tommy bars...first try tightening in all three holes...but sure you have tried that..
...maybe collet chuck is a possibility. .

There are tribes ..and they don't wear tribal marks...
Fred may take exception not to what you say or write but to what you said or wrote to Dick..because Fred and Dick are in the same tribe.. ( note any reference to fred or dick are purely fictional )

I liked it too...
Already a detectable change of style.
Thread: what's the difference in taper, second and plug taps?
01/06/2014 16:55:37
All the references I have seen define ground thread taps by the pitch and thread form with fit say h6...
The taper is applied after?thread form ground into blank...?..ie truncating the thread at the start....
Unless the thread form is a taper form amyway......
Would be happy to see any work on alternative ways... ( ok you could make tapered blank but thats the same really)

One thing ( sure you were going to do)..mark the bearing parts to pair up with housings
You have taking some care to machine true ...nice to preserve that alignment...
Thread: What did you do today? (2014)
31/05/2014 15:05:36
Btw..this is used in kitagawah ( or however)..chucks..
These have for want of a better word saw tooth pattern on back to mate with chuck moving jaws..which are themselves t sloted.....this allows jaws to be re used one pitch in and rebored to suit...
31/05/2014 14:58:35
If you bolt on soft jaws..They can be even more expendable. ..all sorts of profiles to match work...and saves any concerns over heat treatment of jaw"base"...
..with some creativity you can even make self "centering" chuck that closes on odd shapes...
