Thread: IS IT A SCAM |

I always pay for goods which are advertised on Amazon, Ebay, etc thru Paypal. Their guarantee of a refund if goods are not received is good. I have had a couple of problems with goods not turning up and I got my money back. |

Not all aluminium solder rods are the same as shown in this Youtube video demonstration (using American brand materials) |

I was also told that it is probably colloidal graphite but not sure how it was used. I was told that it is good for lubricating bronze bushes but not ball bearings because there is less friction and the balls may not rotate and wear on one point only.. Not sure if is used straight or mixed with oil (it already is mixed with oil). |

I recently purchase this can at a rally with the intention of using it to store steam oil for my model traction engine. I believe that it was originally made by the Burmuh Oil Refinery in Glasgow, circa 1910 and contains graphite in oil. |
Thread: Tool steel |
19/08/2022 01:12:58 |
Tool steel is any of various carbon steels and alloy steels that are particularly well-suited to be made into tools and tooling. Can you be more specific with its application so we could suggest something suitable. Find a steel supplier who can cut a 9"x9" piece from 60mm [2.36"]plate Edited By Paul Lousick on 19/08/2022 01:22:16 |
Thread: Delete an email address |
16/08/2022 10:01:45 |
When I view the Magazines I have to log on each time and two email addresses automatically pop up and I click on the correct one to access the archive. How do I remove the email address that is no longer used ? I have tried to remove it by going into my Settings tab but can only find my present email address and an option to change it. The other email which is not used does not appear. |

A great find ! This is a Youtube video showing the Meteor grinder in action, sharpening a drill. Also mentioned is an attachment for sharpening taps **LINK** |

Etch primers contain a mild acid that etch/bite into the surface to give better adhesion on brass and aluminium. Refer to the instructions for preparing the surface prior to application. Some require a primer as well before adding the top colour coats. |
Thread: Boiler test |
12/08/2022 23:36:11 |
A simple method for measuring the pitch of an internal thread is to screw in a piece of wooden dowel and measure the the number of grooves/inch which are left on the wood. |
12/08/2022 00:30:41 |
As listed by Jason, 3/8" x 26 tpi (British Standard Brass thread) is a common size used for fittings for model boilers and engines. (not to be confused with American bicycle thread which has a 60 degree thread angle instead of 55 degrees) Edited By Paul Lousick on 12/08/2022 00:36:38 |

Make a a rubber washer that has one flat side and the other curved to suit the tube radius. 1 male and the other female on either side of the tube and clamp together with the nut. My tank is 350mm dia and I just used thick rubber and allowed it to squash to fit the curve, Edited By Paul Lousick on 11/08/2022 08:07:22 |

I had to add an outlet to a stainless steel water tank and made my own fitting, similar to the link above by Keith. It just fits in a drilled hole, seals with a rubber washer and held in place with a nut. Much stronger than trying to glue in a fitting. |

Thread: LNWR Blackberry Black |

The problem with shipping paint is possibly because it is flammable and is classed as dangerous goods and cannot be sent by normal courier service or thru the the mail. Special couriers will deliver it for you but are expensive. I live in Sydney and ordered some special glue from Melbourne (2x1 litre tins). A normal courier service is less than $20 but was charged more than $90 because it was flammable. Edited By Paul Lousick on 06/08/2022 08:50:04 |
Thread: Soft jaws |
03/08/2022 11:59:32 |
Protective jaw covers are OK to prevent marking the part if run-out is not critical in a 3-jaw chuck. For an accurate mounting if the jaws are worn or not an adjustable chuck are machinable soft jaws. Youtube video showing how to bore the soft jaws to suit your job using a jaw spider **LINK** |
Thread: Play Day at the Club |

The castings for the 3" scale single cylinder ploughing engines came from Station Road Steam but much of the design was modified. The boiler design had to comply with the Australian code. Other engine detail copied from full size drawings and photographs. Ross is an expert machinist and has been playing with steam engines since he was a boy and has built a number of engines. We had a members only play day at one on the model steam clubs that I belong to and chance to let off steam. A special guest also brought along his recently finished Fowler ploughing engine which was built over 7 1/2 years. Video on Youtube. **LINK** |
Thread: 4140 - general discussion |
31/07/2022 23:40:14 |
4140 is the general, go-to material for shafts and axles in Australia when a higher strength material is required. It is normally supplied as bright or ground bar and machines OK but costs about 50% more than 1020/1030 grade (mild steel) bar. 1030 bright bar has a tensile strength of ~500MPa, 4140 ~900Mpa.

Thread: Clutch pedal servo |
29/07/2022 00:51:26 |
Is it possible to fit a smaller diameter master cylinder or bigger dia slave cylinder to get a better mechanical advantage. It will however require a longer pedal stroke to pump the same volume of fluid. Or adjusted so there is no slop and lost travel in the system. |
