I'm trying to give away a part fabricated Ginery shaper, see for sale ads. A project I wanted to finish but too many projects and not enough time. I have a Drummond hand shaper, lovely machine. Been trying to think for ages about trying to motorize it! Still it is quite theraputic to mindlessly pull the handle back and forth and watch it shave metal off. I know I am sad.

The buckling of relative thin plating, when subjected to shear loads, is called Wagner tension field. Although the plating is continuous, for shear forces it acts like a lattice girder with tensile and compressive forces at +/- 45 degrees. The parts in compression tend to buckle and produce the effect mentioned. It is very noticeable on large helicopters. It is not detremental. Apparently the same effect is used in the garment industry, although they call it drape.

The number 721 is stamped by the fiducial line on the X axis slide ways. I assume this is the serial number for my Drummond shaper.

Another useful programing language/aid is Excel. It already has the output screen built. And by using Visual Basic for Applications one can write a programme, see the results and get an automatic CAD output. (Not sure what CAD means nowadays, in my days it meant Computer aided Drawing/Draughting but I think that now it means Computer Aided Design, hey ho).

I totally agree with all your comments Dave.

But we are hobby programmers, like we use hobby machines, for our own enjoyment and pleasure. We do not use industrial machines and methods (in general) for our pastime.

Our time is purely for our own pleasure. If our programme provides us with the result we want does it matter whether it is written in Basic, C++, assembler or machine code? We are in a hobby world of anything goes as long as it works.

Btw TrueBasic was originally for Dos, Windows, Mackintosh and Linux. I still have a linux installation disk, if only I could figure out how to install a tar ball. lol regards John.

The problem with Basic computer language is the name. I used TrueBasic by the originators of the original basic language, a structured and improved Basic. Speed seems to be the bug bear of opponents of Basic. But what does a fraction of a second matter to a bigger fraction of a second? TrueBasic was my go to computer programming language. Later in life while wanting to programme PICs I used assembler(assembly) programming language, mainly for decoding digital calipers. Python seems a peculiar programming language in that indents are part of the essential formatting. Model Engineers like to use old machines and methods but seem to disapproved of old programming languages.

Hi, Although most PCs don't have a parallel port socket/plug on the rear face they still have a built in parallel port on the mother board. Check on boot up the bios settings and see if there is a parallel port setting. If so all that is needed is the socket with a flying lead (Amazon or E-bay for a couple of quid). Fix it to one of the expansion slots at the back and connect (see mother board details or google it)
