Roger , did you get anywhere with the insert ?. I am having trouble registering with the website.

Can the viewers recommend any of the German copy to holders , - AXA and PeWe ?.

Thread: Wall electrics
11/11/2014 10:12:18

Sorry chaps , the arrowed switch in the pic is the one that trips. And thanks.switch.jpg

Can anyone help with my electricity box on the wall please?. I have a circuit breaker for the sockets that my Myford S7 and milling machine are plugged into.

They both have inverters and if the Myford it is plugged in (but not running) when I switch on the Bridgeport milling machine it triggers the circuit breaker on the wall.

If I unplug the Myford the Bridgeport works no problem and vice versa.

I suspect I need an operated circuit breaker?

Thread: wire- plain , not galvanised, where to obtain ?.

I can buy any amount of 2mm galvanised wire, most easily at the garden centre. Where can you buy plain old untreated single strand wire 2- 4 mm ?.

Thread: thick wall steel pipe for rollers
25/03/2014 21:44:51

Scaffold tube is good but a bit big on the diameter , for various reasons needs to be about an inch.

25/03/2014 21:38:22

I need to move my lathe in the workshop. I have been using short lengths of 1 inch mild steel bar. I would like something longer ( 3-4 foot) and have seen people use thick walled tubing, - could be the rigid compressed air stuff ?. Does anyone have any recommendations ?.

Thread: electrolysis for rust removal- carbon plates
11/03/2014 12:00:07

Cheers Gordon, good tip about the sink. Does the electrolyte stay clean(ish).

The venerable shopdogsam

from the east coast of Arkansas recommends graphite plates which do appear to be much cleaner. Where can they be obtained in the UK ?.

Thread: Welding Gas
18/02/2014 11:33:23

At risk of answering my own post.

Some telephone research for Leeds , - maybe other suppliers are different.

Allbee acetylene cylinder is £175.75 +vat to 'buy' with one filling . forgot to write down the cost of filling.

Albee oxygen cylinder is £147.50 +vat to buy the cylinder full.

Hobbyweld

acetylene - £160 deposit +60 filling.

oxygen - 60 deposit +24 filling.

The cylinders are different sizes between the 2 suppliers. I have come to the conclusion I can make do without.

re Michael Williams post about safety checks - what safety checks are getting done in my garage by BOC while the cylinders have sat there at vast expense for 5 years ?.

16/02/2014 18:19:24

Has anyone tried Hobbyweld - http://www.hobbyweld.co.uk/default.php?page=55

I too dread the arrival of that BOC envelope.

Thread: compressed air in the workshop.
26/01/2014 16:55:27

I am finding all the various coupling adapters , hose types and sizes confusing.

I have a compressor and and a few tools - die grinder etc. I don't have any tools that need a high throughput.

Can anyone tell me the most commonly used couplings and hose for a small workshop ?.

Thread: Haimer - 3d sensor
06/01/2014 14:28:51

photo 3.jpgphoto 2.jpgThis probe came to me as part of a deal. I would like to try it in the mill but can't find a manual for setting runout , tho this video suggests it is a matter of adjusting two small allen screws.

I am also a bit confused as to how to use the Z axis measurement for my model.

Does anyone have a manual ?. Sorry about the random insertion of images and lack of rotation, they are the right way up on my pc !.photo 1.jpg

Thread: Boring bar or threading tool?

the aloris version.aloris.jpg

16/11/2013 08:44:13

Russell, those boring bars look so good. Did you make them ?. I have an Aloris one which I will post a picture of.

If you made them I would like to know how you got the round hole so nicely done.

Thread: Knurling wheels - where to buy

Thread: 3 phase wiring anyone ?.
20/10/2013 19:00:57

Good stuff , I am still alive and the grinder is running the correct way , tho needs much adjustment. Thanks for those of you who encouraged me to do it myself, it has saved me no end of time and expense.

just for info. The grinder is at least from 1986. It is fairly impervious to opening and examining, and even of it were I would need to know my way around a multimeter ( and I don't) to work out what was happening as a black wire looks like a black wire.

I've got a converter because the 3 phase quote was £11,000 ( for those who don't like them. ).

19/10/2013 22:20:15

on further investigation.

I have found the grinder wiring diagram, and transwave advice. Not sure it is any help. I think the grinder must be star , it has a 6V powered light. star.jpegtrans2.jpg

Thanks chaps , heres another photo of the plug currently connected to the grinder. if it had L1 , L2 labelled like my reg plug everything would be a lot simpler. Thanks for the warnings especially in capitals , am aware that 415 volts is fairly sparky. That's why I am posting here.  There is a info sheet for the transwave converter , it is not any help.photo 2-3.jpg

I have at last got a 3 phase converter. I need to change the plug on the grinder. The plug on the drill grinder - on the left below, has 3 small pins and a large pin. The plug that fits the converter (red one below) has 4 small pins and one large. The pins are labelled L1 , L2 , L3 and N in the red plug. In the grinder plug below the earth lead goes to the big pin ( no problem there) but the 2 black and one red go to pins that have no labels and there is a blue wire that is going nowhere.

Can anyone help ?.
