Thread: Don't assume the obvious

A dangerous tactic every 5 years or so though Mick

I have to agree with Eric's original post on this thread, there is a lot about model engineering that is daunting, especially for the beginner, and every effort should be made to clarify terminology rather than just assume knowledge.

For my sins, I have a piece of paper from one of our noble Engineering Institutions that says I'm allowed to call myself a "Chartered Mechanical Engineer", but apart from doing metalwork at school (circa mid-seventies) and one term at Hackney Tech on machine tools in the late seventies I've no relevant practical experience other than that gleaned in my own workshop. I can witter on about enthalpy, entropy, partial vapour pressure, computational fluid dynamics etc, but when it comes to setting up a job in my lathe I'm left to using ingenuity and hopefully a good book or two.

When I write a report for work, I use language aimed at the interested layman and when I read something about about model engineering I would hope the author has worked on the same principle. Personally I think this is absolutely critical if we are to encourage younger members into the hobby, especially since the demise of adult education classes in college workshops.
Thread: DRO Guide
28/07/2011 10:53:10
In defence of Allendale, their manual is fine and very clear and makes setting and reading the DRO easy, with worked examples to clarify. I've not tried downloading the sino ones so cannot comment on them. The service I got from Machine-DRO was very good.

I agree with regard to the Allendale manual, it is one of their DRO's I've got. It is fine for how to set readings etc etc, but the sort of guide I had in mind was how to get the best from having a DRO. I can't download the pro videos, we have lousy broadband speed and it would take hours.

It seems there is a gap (well 1 copy would be sold!) in the market here for a clued up potential author to write another volume for the workshop practice series.

Thanks guys for your help, I'm learning and all I can say is that after a couple of days I'm beginning to wonder how i got by before DRO.

I've just had DRO put on my lathe (I wimped out of doing it myself) and it's great, but I feel I could probably get a lot more out of it.

Is there a decent book on the topic that anyone is aware of?
Thread: What happened to the Myford sale thread?
22/07/2011 12:11:06
Hello everyone, I've been following this thread for the last week or so and thought it about time I signed up and said something.

It's a great pity about Myford, a really good product but at a premium price. The present economy is hard on that and what with a rather outdated way of buying spares etc I have to say I was not totally surpised.

I heard about it because I'd just ordered some tools over the phone. A couple of days later Linda phoned to explain what had happened, and sounded quite upset - who can blame her? Fortunately, other than needing to send a cheque payable to the asset co. I got my bits.

RDG now have a brief note on their website so it seems not all is lost. Like I say, it's a great pity but rather symptomatic of much UK manufacturing, premium priced products appeal only to the few who can afford them, and when that number drops so does demand, but wages still have to be paid.

Anyway, it's good to be on the forum and I hope to make more posts.
