Thread: Digital subscription query

NO ... The magazine archive accessed via the "magazines" tab are NOT PDF's and can't be read by a pdf reader, nor can they be downloaded. These are ALL the issues from 2002 onwards.

They need a web browser to read them i.e Internet explorer, Firefox, Chrome etc. I'm not sure if there is a sample anywhere.

A few of the very old issues/articles have been scanned and these are available as pdf's.

Brian,

€160 postage does seem a lot .... I would find out the dimensions of the box and its weight and see if you can get someone in Germany (or Europe) to deliver it to and then pay them to ship to Oz.

Thread: Failure of App on iPad
13/09/2015 09:14:51

I use the Pocketmags App on my iPad and not the Apple Newsstand and I have not had any issues. (I do keep my ios and apps up todate)

Just to clarify, are you using the 'Pocketmags' app or the 'Newsstand' app? (If the latter, perhaps you can try the former)

Also which iPad model are you using and what version of ios?

Thread: 16mm IDRIS

Hi Martin

Yes I am Dave (Steambuff) as per my signature at the bottom of my message

My Cheddar gas tank test certificate states "We certify that this refillable Gas Tank has been tested to a pressure of 375psi (25 bar) - Propane content not to exceed 30%"

My Roundhouse gas tank certificate states "Vessel for Group 1 gasses and associated pipework and fittings : Test pressure 34 bar, maximum permissible working pressure : 17 bar, Maximum working temperature 65 degrees C"

34 bar = 493psi : 17 bar = 246psi

So Roundhouse will have tested at 493psi.

Sorry I cannot help you on the question regarding the temperature as to which the tests in the article that Neil supplied.

Regards Dave

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your reply.

The pressure figures quoted for Roundhouse were taken from their Gas Test Certificate that was supplied with my loco. (Cheddar quoted a test pressure of 375psi

On their website Roundhouse quote that their gas tanks are suitable for mixed gasses up to 60% butane/40% Propane, with a 70/30 mix being most common, they also say that the Gas Tank is rated for 65 degrees Centigrade and should not achieve this.

Some points to bear in mind.

1/Roundhouse gas tanks are used for External and Internal fired boilers and supplied for home-builds.

2/ The location of the gas tank varies from in a tender to in the side tanks right next to the boiler.

3/ They ship loco's world wide.

So if the ambient temperature is 35 degree's (Yes that is even possible in the UK), since the tank is Black, it could exceed this temperature if the loco is sat in full sunlight. (You will know this if you have a dark coloured car), so it could easily reach 50 degree's.

After a run, the boiler will be hot and some of its heat will be passed to the gas tank (if it is next to the boiler) raising its temperature even further, especially if it is sat in the sun.

Saying that we also have to bear in mind that when the liquid gas in the tank becomes a gas it will expand and the temperature will drop. (Hence why the cylinder you use to fill the tank with feels cold)

I have experienced situations where when refilling the gas tank after a run, it is too hot to touch, so well in excess of the 22 degrees you quote. (I suspect it is between 35 and 50 degrees - I have not measured it)

I have never measures the pressure in a gas tank nor its temperature.

I am sure Roundhouse allow a safety margin.

Thread: Packaging stupidity!

Packing done by people on minimum wage who don't understand the language enough to ask for a jiffy bag even if one of them does have a PhD from his home country. Why should they care?

Not strictly true (Well they may be on minimum wage) ... most larger warehouses are computer controlled, so the system will tell the picker/packer to use a certain size box. The staff are told to do what the system tells them to do, they get disciplined if they don't.

The company may only use 3 or 4 different box sizes, so if they mainly ship large trade orders or larger items the item will be packed into the smallest box they have.

Hi Alex

For butane I would test at least 300psi and at least 400psi for butane/propane mix.

Roundhouse test their 16mm loco's gas tanks at 490psi for a working pressure of 245psi

There is no app listed for Apple Mac, so I assume that they are correct.

You should be able to use the on-line reader OK as that is web-based. (I know this means you can't read your mag's off-line)

The Essex 16mm Group has running sessions in peoples gardens once or twice a month over the late spring to early autumn ... some are based in Chelmsford. (Most of these are 32mm gauge ... so may pay you to build to allow the gauge to be changed.

I'm sure they would welcome you as a guest if you want. (If you are interested I can PM you the organisers details)

The nearest ME club with a 32/45mm track is Colchester. (They are currently discussing if they are going to keep the track or not.)

Alex,

Where are you based? Is their another club nearby that has a 32/45mm track?

or Join the 16mm Association, they have quite a few members lines in the Chelmsford area

Thread: Can't access on-line magazines.
02/07/2015 23:15:33

Hi,

I assume that you have a 'Digital' or 'Paper+ Digital' subscription (If you only have a paper/magazine subscription then you don't get access.

Are you logging into the site with the same email address you gave when you signed up fro the subscription? (They have to be the same)

When you entered the subscription number did you enter the full 10 digit number with the 2 leading zero's? Try dropping the 2 leading zero's

Thread: USB breakout board alternatives
11/06/2015 18:21:55

Hi,

Mach3 does not officially support interfacing via USB ... Issues with timing

I have used these products successfully **LINK** They are also available on ebay (Search for "Mach3 USB" limit search to EU - Seller chz.01 is based in France) - Mine was around €30 - £22 It loads a special driver.

(Uses your existing parallel interface breakout board)

Other people have had success with a UC100 but this is a lot more expensive.

Thread: 3mm or 1/8th inch - frame thickness
16/05/2015 11:35:48

Hi,

I agree with Paul, it does not really matter.

One thing to be aware of when making the axles/fitting the wheels is the clearance between the side of the wheels and the frames. (You may need to adjust some of the dimensions on the axle to give the same clearance.
