Thread: Boiler fittings - is brass OK?

My opinion is that if the part is in contact with the copper boiler/firebox then use Bronze.
 
For example, the safety valve bush that is soldered into the boiler must be Bronze, but the safety valve itself that screws into the bush can be Brass.

5/32" Tapping drill it is then. (Makes life a lot easier)
 
My Drawings from Blackgates should arrive next week .. so I will use them as my master.
 
This is my first build in 'Large Scale" ... so I don't want too much metal in my scrap bin (Future project bin). I have built to 16mm/ft NG before.

Thanks for that esp the tip about the nipples/ferrules as I tend to purchase these parts.
 
I'll see if Donald/Raymond confirm the internal bore of 0.108" (Seems logical to me)
 
I hate the mix of Imperial and Metric . 7/64" is 0.109375" so why can't this be used. (Rather that try and find a 2.74mm drill)

Thread: New Viewer for MEW

The new viewer works fine for me with Windows 7 (64 Bit) and IE 9 (64 Bit) -- The old viewer does not work with the 64 Bit version of IE 9, I have to use the 32 Bit version.
 
I had a Flash update this week.

A question on the Turbo Generator Steam Valve. (Page 13)
 
It looks as if the main body is turned from a single 1/2" dia piece (Brass), The diameter of the section to the right of the 1/2" part is missing ... Is this meant to be 3/8" dia?
 
Also how do you bore the centre bore?
 
From left to right as drawn the bore is -
3/32" for 1/2" then
5/32" for 3/16" then
5/32x32 tapped for 5/16" (Therefore narrower dia) then
5/32" for 1/4"
 
Am I being stupid ... but how can you get the 5/32" dia between the tapped section and the 3/32" section (As both are narrower? (To me a bit too small for a boring tool)
 
Also for the bush coming in from the bottom ... the drawing shows the main body beind drilled for both 1/8" and 3/32" ... which is correct.

Also says drill and tap 3/16" deep
Leaves nothing to drill the 3/32" hole into

I have poker burners in all my 16mm loco's, and I will have in the Eric I am building.
 
All Roundhouse, Accucraft etc 16mm loco's use poker burner's, so therem is not a long with them, I admit that they can be a pain to get working correctly.
 
Have you joined the steammodelloco16mm yahoo group yet? They should be able to help. (Brian Wilson the books author is a member and he often offers help.)

With the likes of Zino, you actually download the magazine to your PC or ipad etc and you can access/keep any copies purchased during your subscription period ... but you would have to purchase back/archive issues. (You can also buy copies if you have no subscription)
 
With the current provider, you can access all current and back/archive issues during your subscription period ... these are not downloaded to your PC (unless you produce pdf's page by page) ... but if you terminate your subscription you have access to nothing. (Not even the ones issued during your subscription period). (I think I am correct there)

The 64 bit version of IE9 under Win 7 (64 bit) works for me as well ... BUT you have to be in compatability mode. (Click the little icon at the top .. Looks like a torn sheet of paper)

You need "adobe flash player" to be able to read the magazines.
 
Apple do not allow the use of flash on iphone or ipad (I think that this is still the case). I have just confirmed this on my ipad and iphone.
 
For the same reason I suspect that most e-readers will not be suitable.
A Netbook running Windows should be OK .. but you would need to check first.

I agree with Peter .... Give it a go, you won't regret it.

The hardest bit is starting.....


This will be my first project in this scale, previously having only built kits in 16mm/ft. So I class myself as a beginner, and I havn't used a lathe since I was at school over 35 years ago, I purchased a mini-lathe over 5 years ago and it is still sitting in the Garage un-touched.


So I have taken the bull by the horns, ordered material for the frames etc along with the plans and have also booked myself onto a course on how to use the lathe.


Where abouts in Suffolk are you located? I am about to join my local club (15 miles away).


So give up smoking and get your first bits ordered with the money you will be saving.

Many thanks Steve and Dusty for the dimensions. I was not far off, I based my scale and length on the wheel diameter and wheelbase on the drawings in ME. comparing it with the actual loco.
 
Thanks for your offer of help Peter ... I have a Digital only subscription to ME, so I have printed all the pages to PDF and to paper (After merging all the single page PDF's into 1 PDF file).
 
I have also being going through all the post's copyiing all the issues/solutions etc into a spreadsheet, so hopefully I won't hit any of the issues encountered by other builders. (One advantage of starting late)
 
I have just ordered the material for the Frames etc along with the drawings.

I am about to start building the 'B' Class, (my first loco that is bigger than than 16mm/ft) one thing I have not seen yet are the overall dimensions. (I have not had chance to see it in the flesh yet)
 
So can someone tell me :-
 
The overall Length (Buffer to Buffer) (I think it is around 36")
The overall Width
The overall Height
The Weight
 
and finally the scale ... I think it is about 1-3/4" tot the foot (1:7) is this correct?
 
I have the drawing supplied by the DHRS and Various photo's I took when I was in India several years ago.
 
I have ordered the drawings from Blackgates.

I have noticed there is no way to indicate the fact that you are a "Digital Only" or Paper subscriber. The answers could be different for both options.
 
Also there seems to be no questions about the Digital Edition. i.e Quality of printed pages/drawings.

Are we then expected to move our PC's and Monitors into the workshop whenever we want to build anything using the drawings???
 
I Subscribe to other publications digitally and their print-outs are as good as the printed copy ..... This is all we are asking for. (Yes it would be nice to print multiple pages at a time ... but lets sort out the quality first)

Thread: Can not view Digital Issues with 64 bit IE

They are not PDF, David said they were adobe Flash.
 
I have the 64-Bit Flash IE plug in from Adobe and it still does not work. (I downloaded the latest version today just to make sure)
 
The Flash plug-in works OK with video's etc on otther sites...
 
So I suspect that the "Digital Editions" has issues with IE9 and 64 bit. (Can anyone else confirm this?)

I can not seem to view the Digital Issues (Model Engineer) with the 64 bit version of Internet_Explorer 9 under Windows 7 (64 bit).
 
The box opens, but then stays blank.
 
If I try and access through the 32-bit version of IE9, (still in Win-7 64 bit),everything seems to be OK.
 
Are you aware of the issue and when will you be fixing it?
(I normally use the 64 bit version)
