Thread: Granite slab in Aldi
28/12/2012 12:41:50

Thanks Les, I can't believe I missed that thread.

28/12/2012 10:54:45

Anyone had a look at the granite "work top saver" that Aldi are selling? I wondered if they might be flat enough to use for marking out. They seem cheap enough at £7.99

Thread: When do I get my Wixey gauge?

Thanks David, email sent.

Any update on this now that the subscription manager is presumably back at work?

16/08/2012 11:24:33

Hmm, I wonder what's happened to mine? I hope DC1 sees this thread and pops mine in the post.

I'm sure that would have made perfect sense to me at 2am, John, but in the clear light of day, it's just gone straight over my head.

I took out an MEW subscription on the 12th July, made a grinding rest, and need something to set angles on it. :D

Thread: Wrong cover page for 4409
12/08/2011 01:02:10
Nipped into a certain high street shop today for the latest MEW and took a look at ME 4409. Why is the Reeves catalogue at the front, obscuring the list of contents of ME?

Thread: Myford ML7 travelling steady 'fingers' size
18/05/2011 13:40:19
Thanks Dick and Nick, I'll take a look at those threads, and thanks James, I've taken a look and bookmarked the website. The headstock belt guard paint is peeling off, so I'll need to buy paint at some point. If I ever get back to work, that is. (Cue violins)

Thanks for tip, Gordon, though knowing me, it'll still be bare metal and just another piece of equipment to de-rust next spring. (This garage of mine turns into a shower every year.)

Can I turn this thread into a request how to stop condensation in my garage?

Thank you! I'd cleaned up the two pieces, which were always going to be the same width as your measurement as that's what I had made the slots in the body. They finished up .080 thicker and .190 longer than your measurements, but that won't matter, so I'll leave them as they are. I'll make the tips .250 wide, though that's another guess after looking at one on fleabay. I was worried about the angle between the fingers, but I found out on the Myford website that it is 100 degrees, and that's what I made it, so I am a happy camper.

A little bit of, ahem, detailing, and it'll be ready to use. I've got a can of Nissan Dark Blue spray paint, which is nearer to Myford Grey than the only other spray can I have, which is Rover Vermillion.

Cheers!

If they are 3/4" wide, they are probably the same. I can make them any size I want I suppose, but I wanted it to have the same overall dimensions as the Myford one.

I carved the body out of a piece of 1" plate I had lying around, mostly by hand. I was going to try to mill some of the plate away to lighten it, but decided I wasn't up to that yet, so it's still a heavy lump that definitely won't flex.

Thanks for looking for me.

Is there anyone who would be kind enough to measure the sizes of the 'fingers' on the Myford travelling steady, please?

I began making one about 12 years ago and then lost the piece of manganese bronze I had bought to make the fingers. I had finished the body apart from some small details, but as I had lost the bronze, it got forgotten about. I found the bronze yesterday and so I want to finish the steady. Unfortunately, my friend, whose original I was copying, has passed away, and so I have nothing to work to.

If anyone can provide the sizes, please either post them here, or email to my nickname at gmail.com.

Thanks,

Martin.

Thread: Adjustable Dials for Feedscrews
16/05/2011 21:12:48
Lathejack, simply press escape and the animations in all the ad's should stop. Works for me. It is easy enough to get rid of the ad's altogether if you use Firefox and the Adblock Plus addon, but IMO you would be losing a great resource.

I think I need to look into adjustable dials for my ML7, too
Thread: Easy Myford Oil Pump Seal
15/05/2011 13:11:29
I recently replaced the all the nipples on my ML7 with ones that fit my full size grease gun. I removed the old nipples and drilled and tapped all the holes to suit the new ones. I had to remove the saddle to get to the one at the back, which I replaced with an angled one to make it easy to get to. Then I removed the plunger rod, or whatever it's called, from the grease gun and welded the holes up, same with the air release valve at the other end. Filled it with oil and checked for leaks, and it was OK. Oiling is a doddle now.

I still need to do the two for the countershaft, and I could do with changing the one at the front of the saddle to an angled one because the handwheel gets in the way.

All I need to do now is learn how to use the lathe to make something other than bushes and spacers.

Thread: This months MEW are 3 CNC features two too many
13/05/2011 20:08:06
I was about to subscribe to the magazine, and in fact I would have except I couldn't find anywhere to let me state which issue to start from. I came to the forum to see if I could find out and spotted this thread. I am glad I did as I have no interest in CNC, or repairing cars come to that, as that's what my job was for the last 25 years.

I'm new to model engineering and MEW, so I think I will stick to browsing it in W H Smiths and buying if there is something in it to interest me, something I should have done today before buying issue 177.

Martin.
