Thread: Countrymans steam part 3

Jason,

I will ask, I think it was because he had some material of that thckness going spare and time to experiment.

The person in question is a very highly talented and experienced toolmaker - for an example of his work try the following link to video of a small hit and miss engine he has made from scratch, no castings at all

David Clark did say in another thread that he was holding the next part until about 3 issues time to give him time to check it thoroughly

A group (well 3) of us local to me are very interested in the portable and have been discussing the articles. We all await the next part, which we hope will clarify matters further. One of our number has been doing more than the other two, haing had a go at drawing the hubs correctly. I received the following from him by email and pass it on as a possible diffculty. Of course, this may become clear in the next part or we may have missed something, comments are most welcome

Hi Sean,
Had a bit of spare time at work so I thought I would have a go at machining a hub for the portable and have come across another small problem. If you tap the holes 6ba for the spokes a 6ba countersunk will not screw flush with the 1mm thick spoke due to the flank angle. I think it will be possible to face off the protruding screws after it has all been fully assembled but an alternative would be to use smaller countersunk screws. Just a thought.

Jason,

Manor Court School is in Potsmouth UK. There were a number of these engines at a recent event at Eastney Pumping station in Portsmouth. They were built in the 70's I think. Didn't make thngs like that in school in my day

Thread: Adams wheels
21/05/2011 18:59:14
Julian,

fair point. I don't think anyone was knocking Adam's work. Actually, to be very pedantic, is this really a model of a B,E&A portable? the catalogue it is taken from is for Reading Ironworks, BE&A ceased to exist 15 years before that catalogue was produced. All of the illustrations of BE&A portables I have seen (mostly the ones in the recent book produced by the RLS) show very different construction.

The point about the back spokes being over length, hence skewing the location, seems to be correct. This just points to Adam making agood job of a poor article.

Just come back to this post. I agree fully with Jason's post, but then I have not even started to make the wheels, soyou are way ahead of me. I do have a query - Adam, we do not have any idea of what your knowledge of portables or model engineering experience is. Without some knowledge of the real thing it would be pretty difficult to get it "right" from the published info so far. I do have a couple of photos of portable wheels on my phone which I can post if it would be useful As far as the front wheels are concerned, while the words in the mag say they should have less spokes, I have seen the real thing with wheels which look like yours.

The Steam Apprentice Club cab be found at http://www.ntet.co.uk/sac/ look under Activities. Plans are basic, but can produce good results.

For anyone under 21 the SAC is a good organisation which produces a magazine, organises drivign days wehre memners get to learn how to prepare, drive and look after both full size and model traction engines and membership also allows free entry to a large number of traction engine rallies, including the Great Dorset steam Fair - the saving on the latter for going for one day pays for the annual membership alone.

Scans sent to John off list.

For anyonje wanting wagons etc for Mamod or Wilesco sized engines, then the Steam Apprentice Club web site has some useful drawings to download. They organise a model competition each year at the Great Dorset Steam Fair and the plans are on the web site, under "Activities" for a Wagon, water cart and organ. This year's model is a gallopers horse or a cockerell, the plans for that are in the "Competitions" page.

John, having had email problems, if you remind me of your email address I will send the scans direct as there are dimensions on the drawings to work from.

Are you going to post photos of your Wilesco conversion, as I would be interested in seeing it. I knew your name was familiar,

I have now started a photo album. In it are drawings for Burrell log wagon and traction wagon and Fowler ploughing team living van. The Burrell drawings are in 2 parts each as they were too big to go in the scanner in one hit. Hope they are useful

John, I have not forgotten you, just little time and email problems.

Must clear up the workshop as I cannot find the relevent issues of ME right now, but the index shows that John Haining had articles on living vans and water carts in alternate issues from no. 3774 to no. 3790.

Geoff Gilbert has very good drawings of a Burrell traction wagon and of a log wagon in Burrell Style. He also has a copy of a Fowler works drawing for a ploughing living van in his book Fowler Steam Cultivating Machinery. The latter would have come from MERL at Reading so if you want to make a Fowler wagon then an enquiry to MERL should come up with a works drawing to work from, I do not know what they charge. A message off list might help for personal research purposes

John Haining did drawings for 2 living vans. Can't remember when, but I do have those issues in the workshop. Geoff Gilbert also wrote a book on steam thrashing and produced one of Folwer works drawings which includes at least a living van drawing. Will send an off list message later when I have had time to check, but I do have all the Geoff Gilbert books
