The email seems to come from Belgium as a lot of spam does. Possibly some homeless boy in an internet booth in Brussels just trying to get some lunch money. Mick |
Thread: Wooden Gears |

That is a beautiful thing Michael. As for my son's venture, I think that he has settled on maple to make the gears. Now all he needs is the means to cut them as in Michael G's link. Mick |
Thread: Plans for updating the archaic forum? |

The greatest strength of this forum is that its members give freely and generously of their expertise and experience to anyone who asks for it. I hate to think how much this expertise would cost in the commercial world even if it were possible to put a valuation on it. I would hate to see changes that would jeopardise this philanthropic relationship. Mick |

Just got back from the shops where I was charged or rather asked for £186 for 3 loaves of bread. Why? New software. Mick |

Almost every time that an "improved" website is introduced it is anything but an improvement. More flashy , trendy colours maybe, anything but intuitive and a complete relearning experience with loads of "*****£$%^&*aaghs" as I fall for the quirky bits and do it wrong yet again. No give me "old and quirky" every time over the equally or more aggravating "new and quirky". Mick |

Thanks very much gents. I have sent him all the links. I have a feeling that he might be attracted to the machines oriented towards wood as he has a wood lathe and enjoys the medium. Mick Oh dear! Sorry David, have I missed something? Mick |

Does the CNC he desires need to be able to cut metal? Would a wood cutting CNC machine satisfy him for a while? How about helping him build a CNC router? With that approach he/you can save some money and have a better understanding what it takes to make a CNC machine. Knowing that will set him up to be better able to understand and use a CNC mill. Here are a couple videos on making one. Hallo Ron.....I haven't spoken to him for a few days but I would guess that a compromise might be an attractive idea. He loves building things so a home built CNC might be just the job for now. He has access to and is competent on his brother's metal lathe and milling machine and has his own wood lathe so he probably has the wherewithal. As for helping him build it, there is nothing that I would like better but he lives in OZ and I am in the UK. I will send him the links. Thanks for the interest. Mick |

Is there such a thing as Budget CNC? My 16 year old grandson in Australia would like to expand into this area. He has experience with computer building and programming together with manual lathe, milling machine and 3D printing experience. An off the shelf machine at circa £3000 is out of his reach at the moment even with Christmas on the horizon. Should he just save up his dollars or try a different approach? Mick |

Thread: waterproof sealing strip |
02/10/2020 18:45:05 |
Thank you gents for the usual abundance of ideas. I am making a submarine ....outline only, not a diving model....which will be a replica of the Jules Verne Nautilus, 1954 film version. The model is 32" long. The stern and bows are built up from turned oak and the centre section of the hull is a 10" length of 110mm drainage pipe. This centre section has a section 8" x 2" cut out of the top into which the motor, battery and servos etc can be accessed. This is the hatch that I hope to close with a piece of curved 0.5mm brass sheet. I now feel that it would have been easier to give this information at the outset so apologies for the omission. Mick |

Assistance required please to locate a sealing strip. The strip is required to seal a thin metal plate which goes over an aperture in the top of a boat's hull. The metal plate is removable for access to a battery and other gubbins inside the hull. The metal plate will not be below the waterline but very close to it and will inevitably get wet when the boat is in motion. I would like the sealing strip to have as low a profile as possible. The metal plate will be screwed down onto the sealing strip to give a bit of squeeze. Does such a sealing strip exist ? Mick |

I recently asked for information on types of wood suitable for making gears and had a very generous and helpful response. May I now take this a step further and ask whether anyone knows of software into which one can input gear data ie pcd, number of teeth and module and obtain a two dimensional printout of the gear. This is for my son who needs to make wooden gears for a project. His hope is to glue a paper image of the gear onto suitable wood and cut around it. Mick |

I have just spoken to my son in Canada. He bought a S/H pillar drill (make SA LR 102902-6) about a year ago and has only just started using it but it runs anticlockwise. It seems to be a straightforward pillar drill with an induction motor and no reversing facility. What could be wrong with it please ? Mick |
