Thread: Tomato seed recommendation?
07/03/2022 13:59:20

Not good to use saved seed. Most tomatoes are F1 hybrids and are bred to give the features you desire.

A trip to a garden center or even in the supermarket will give you good choices. One I like is, Velvia.

F1 hybrids are usually a good bet. even size, ripening in sequence and good taste.

Thread: Mystery object

The fact that you say the owner cleaned it because it was rusty, means that it is maybe of German origin from wartime as they made bullets with steel jackets at that time.Copper washing to stop immediate rusting.

Last time I saw these was in .44 Magnum pistol made by Norma, I recovered some after about a month and they had rusted.

I have just checked my list of cartridges and cannot find a calibre like that.

It has been through a rifled barrel so is a projectile. Likely .300 calibre.

Thread: Replacement Vial for precision level
03/03/2022 12:27:55

Me. How is the vial held in place, plaster or glue?

If plaster soak in water and then gently pick away at the plaster till the vial is free.

When replacing, make a square of paper the same size as you took out and fold it in reducing concertina fashion.

Slide the paper and vial back in place and then use plaster to reseal.

One proviso, the vial tube usually has a dimple sticking out where it was sealed, keep that clear of plaster.

Is there some way to refresh windows live mail?

Now and again my live mail glitches, symptoms being double entry posts, being slow to show mail.

Thread: recent power outage in Medway

I would think a power cut is where it would affect just an item or say a house, an outage is where a whole area is without power as in my case in Medway, where over 300 houses were affected.

The after effects to me being chilled were like having the Flu, muscle and joint pains etc. it has taken a few days to wear off physically so I feel I may have been on the way to being frozen.

It was several hours before the thermostat was up to heat.

Thread: Blocked Drain
21/02/2022 15:38:36

Be aware that washing machines will block a drain with a chalk like substance which sets quite hard, I had to jab it quite heavily to dislodge it.

Thank you lads for some illuminating things that I could do. I could have gone to my Son but an Airedale dog and cats not compatable.

The 2 day low temperatures have left me feeling tired and achy back. It took several hours for the heating to come up to temperature, all OK now.

I will look into one of there catalytic heaters, I believe they do not need a vent? Till the next saga, Thank you.

I live in Hempstead in Gillingham, Kent.

Storm Eunice caused an outage here when a tree fell on power lines cutting just this district. This lasted for 48hrs and consequently I was without light or heat for that time. Over two days the house temp. dropped to 12.3c and the outside temp. was 10.1.c

To say the least I was hypothermic with outside clothes on and wrapped in a blanket I was shiverering. Getting out of bed in the morning was iceberg cold!

Now I am looking at some form of heating, I have no fireplace, no gas fire. only central gas heating.

What can I do if this happens again, I went out and bought a gas cylinder and burner to boil water so I had hot drink and soup but not really satisfactory.

Dog loved it as she likes the cold! At 85 years of age I feel the cold.

If you are going to lube the scroll plate then use graphite grease or maybe copperease.

Thread: UK battery production

It was about processing Lithium, highly specialised multi process.

Maybe tie in with the new battery manufacturing factory being built.

Thread: What is this?

The button stick was no use after we were issued with the anodised buttons on uniforms instead of brass buttons.

Every part of the button stick had a use, It had to be polished as well. God help you if it was not!

As a 26 years veteran I know!

Thread: I am getting shorter - how about you.

Here's something, as you get older your ears get longer and bigger!

09/02/2022 15:01:11

Its a fact that as men get older they get deafer and hear lower sounds, women on the other hand get higher hearing frequency.

So no behind the back utterences. they will hear you.
