Thread: Converting the from imperial to metric thread cutting ? |

Can anyone check out this link and see if what they claim is correct, I have the same lathe so this would be a big plus for me.

Thread: Variable speed motor ? |
23/10/2022 14:37:11 |
Does the motor need to be any specification for VFD use or will any three phase motor work ? This would allow me to sources a 1 hp used motor and save some money.

I only have basic electrical knowledge so getting into anything experimental or complex is out of my range I'm afraid. What's a well proven value for money VFD ? |

I'm finally planning to start on getting my Atlas 12" 3000 series lathe up and running for next year, can anyone tell me what the current options are for a variable speed motor system ? 1. It won't be used a lot, not even once a week, so doesnt need to be high spec. 2. My workshop is offgrid so it must run from a generator (with AVR.) 3. I like salvaging stuff rather than buying new when possible.

Thread: Options for Variable speed drive on Atlas 12" lathe ? |
25/07/2022 16:36:22 |
Can the original counter shaft arrangement be mounted underneath?

Thread: Building a lathe stand ? |

The rigid beam takes the load and everything else is independent of that, could be heavy timber construction. Once the beam is fabricated it could be skimmed on a mill both ends where the lathe feet touch down.
My lathe would require a 1200 x 185 mm box section or channel.

Thread: Options for Variable speed drive on Atlas 12" lathe ? |

I have a 12" Atlas 3900 series and it came with a large Hoover 1 pH, 1 hp, 1420 rpm motor, what are my options for a variable speed drive on this machine?
The motor will be mounted underneath. I don't have space in my workshop for the countershaft arrangement. |
Thread: Casting copper hammer heads ? |
30/06/2022 18:46:03 |
I have acquired a copper hammer with no inserts, I know nothing about casting and only want to roughly cast these two heads, what would be the easiest way to do it with common items?
One thing I have got is a copper recycling bin so no shortage of metal.

Thread: Quick change tool post ? |

What quick change tool post would you recommend for an Atlas 12" lathe?
I'm looking for no frills value for money not junk but not high spec. |
Thread: Lathe stands or benches ? |
28/06/2022 01:19:48 |
I have acquired an Atlas 12" 3900 series and will need to fabricate a stand for it, which will have an under mounted variable speed motor, what makes a good base for a lathe? My first idea is a piece of railway track i have, plasma cut into a T section beam which could be skimmed on a mill both ends where the feet are bolted? I reckon this would be a rigid basis for the machine and cost me zero.

I bought the Atlas, should be collecting bit this week.

Thread: Moving v belts on pulleys ? |
20/06/2022 12:29:21 |
On my Tauco drill with a new motor, yes the belt is jus a fraction too small, the motor mounting bars are fully up to the hilt and there's no adjustment. |
19/06/2022 12:47:24 |
Any tricks for moving around tight v belts around on multi stepped pulleys on a pillar drill?

Thread: Book on lathe operation ? |
18/06/2022 22:35:20 |
Looking for a book on operating a basic lathe, I need a complete refresher course since the last lathe I used was during my apprenticeship in the 1990's.
Got an Atlas 12 " or 6" coming my way soon. |
Thread: Myford or Atlas lathe ? |
11/06/2022 20:22:01 |
How does an Atlas 12 " 3000 series compare to a Myford 7 in quality, accuracy, spares ?
I've been offered the Atlas for about a 5th of the going price of the latter.
I trained on a Myford super 7 when I was an apprentice and they still seem to be selling for top dollar. |
Thread: Portass Dreadnought? |
10/06/2022 12:20:49 |
I've seen an Atlas MK1 12 " without gearbox for the same money now, bigger than I need but...
|
09/06/2022 20:18:36 |
Been offered one of these for £300 with all its tooling, and this is in the same city as me so no courier costs.
What quality level were these lathes and are they worth buying ? Edited By Rich2502 on 09/06/2022 20:19:58 |

The flat bed is a small precision ( meaning no lead screw for screw cutting) lathe without any micrometer dials as standard and only one speed. If you want a similar, but larger lathe to do useful work and you pass south of B'ham I have a T&LM you can have for nothing, comes with 1/4hp motor + micrometer dials + a 4" / 100mm chuck mounting plate and a smaller one for a faceplate it will need to be treated to new chucks and belts. We've sent multiple texts and messages to the number you gave but no response, if you don't now want to give this lathe away you can say so, it's not a big deal, we can then get on with looking for another one. |
Thread: Ball bearing cups for bicycle hubs ? |
10/05/2022 23:57:49 |
What prompted the question was seeing a stack of 20+ wheels in the bike shop going for recycling, the only thing wrong with them was worn out cups, some of them were £80-90 when new, the mechanic in the shop there told me the cups couldn't be removed but I took a few home and punched the cups out easily. Making new cups would get me free top grade wheels for life. None of the pockets for the cups match any stock sealed bearing units unfortunately.
