I own an old Emco Compact 8 and it is still delivering good work. I don't know why Dave say the Emco is not good at running in reverse as there is no chance the chuck will come off, cutting left-hand threads might be more difficult though. I have made extra change-gears for it to cut Module threads and some other tools. Good luck with your first lathe.

Hi Tristan,

The Warco 1322 with 32-85-100 gears are the setup used for metric feeds. It should be possible to remove those gears and replace them with others. The 42-127-120-42 combination of gears you give in your first post is for metric threading, other gears are needed for imperial threading as given in the manual Jason linked to. You should have a collection of change-gears for the lathe.

Welcome to the forum. Amazone has Boxford backplates and you can of course, get backplates from UK companies like Warco, Arc etc. delivery cost may be high though.

I'm using a tool-cabinet with drawers, similar to this, for my 120kg milling machine. I put a thick piece of kitchen top on top of it and some angle iron to support it. I also changed the wheels. It has done the job for over a decade, the drawers are handy for the milling machine tools and cutters.

Your first link points to CCMW060204 inserts, if you have a holder for them the HSS inserts should drop right in, as you say they are easy to sharpen. What the codes mean are explained here.

I too agree with Dave (SOD), and have a collection of chucks in different sizes, both self-centring and independent and a collet chuck. I like to be able to use a chuck that works well for clampinf the workpiece I'm working on.

Welcome to the forum. On my self-centering 3-jaws the chucks have a number stamped for each jaw slot and each jaw is stamped as you describe and of course, go into the slot with matching number. I assume you have already cheked this thread?

Sorry Baz, I used an example from a Swedish supplier I use, just to show the shape. They are used to drill out broken taps much the same way the D-bit Dave used. They are made from tungsten carbide and ned 1500 to 3500 RPM and a steady feed.

Hi Dave,

You are not the only one that has broken a M5 serial tap. I have never seen a carbide D-bit used to remove the broken tap, only a tool that was triangular in shape.
