Thread: Cost of deliveries

I'll have to put you right on certain things there within UK GDP in UK is sub 2.5% (peanuts.) Rest made of our wealth is made up of non productive such as banking in London.

Depends on where you get your statistics from! I found

According to EEF, UK manufacturing currently:

  • employs 2.6 million people
  • contributes 11% of GVA
  • accounts for 44% of total exports
  • represents 70% of business research and development (R&D)
  • provides 13% of business investment

Thread: Windows 10 again

32 bit applications will run on 64bit W10. I am still using Photoshop 7 on my W10 64bit computer without any problems.

Thread: Upgrade from SC3 lathe
16/11/2018 09:30:37

As the encomat 14d has a maximum chuck size of 5 1/2" and a maximum faceplate also of 5 1/2" I would find it rather limiting! Not a particular useful lathe for many model engineering tasks.

The pre-war Whitworth bolt sizes were bigger, 1 " bolt was 1.67" so 5BA nut on 5BA bolt seems about right!

I replaced both of my belts with these from Lathespares and am very pleased with them.

Thread: Traction engine newbie in south Wales

Andrew

I may be able to help you as I am building one of these that was started by my father about 50 years ago. The design is very old with the plans dated 1949 and there are inconsistencies and errors in the drawings. One of the main problems is that the boiler is shown with integral copper hornplates rivetted and soft soldered.. I drew up, and had professionally built, a new, silver soldered copper boiler with separate steel hornplates which makes for a much better solution.

I also have a pair of machined front wheel castings which I can send to you.

If you send me a Private Message with your email details I will contact you with what I can provide.

Thread: More App Issues
31/08/2018 15:06:38

I pinged all the addresses that Resource Monitor shows Pocketmags using and they all timeout.

Regardless of the slow response the application does not show it is downloading or how long it will take. It is the lack of user information that is most annoying.

To put this into context I subscribe to the print adition of Autosport, which is a weekly publication. For this I get the paper copy, access to premium information on the website and a free downloadable PDF version of the magazine.

31/08/2018 13:42:29

I do not use it now because it is such a load of rubbish (see reviews in Microsoft Store) but I thought I would just see if I could download anything. I have tried to look at my local magazines and after 5 minutes it has finally come up with a list of magazines and when I tried to download one it just did nothing but about 15 minutes later it appears to have downloaded it but with no indication that it had done it. Perhaps Jason is a superfast broadband connection but on my rural 10Mbs line it is totally useless.

As a retired IT professional I would be ashamed to have anything to do with such an abysmal application.

Thread: Drive Belts - Link or Vee?
15/06/2018 12:04:25

I changed the old V-belts on My Myford S7 to link belts and it runs much smoother. Before I changed the motor to countershaft belt the vibration made the high speed almost unusable but now there is no problem.

I bought the proper Fenner belts from Lathespares.

The stupid thing is that if you have a PC and want to access the online archive you have to subscribe to the digital edition but downloading magazines to your PC is not supported!

Thread: Inclined smoke tubes
29/12/2017 16:33:01

On my Bassett-Lowke 1 1/2" TE the uplift is on the original drawing. As the original boiler was a riveted and soft-soldered design with the hornplates integral to the boiler I re-designed it to be a silver-soldered copper boiler with separate steel hornplates but kept the 1/8" tube uplift. It is quite a small boiler (3" dia) and I would have thought steel would not give a very good performance.

I find it interesting to see the enthusiasm for F H Grubb cycles as Freddie Grubb was my wife's great uncle on her mother's side although I don't think he was as good a businessman as he was a cyclist!

Thread: Pocketmags withdraw Windows 7 and 8.0 Support
03/06/2017 18:32:12

Neil,
The Offline reader I was using is NOT the same as the current app. The version I have is dated 19/05/14 and is referenced appref-ms.
I have downloaded the current app but it cannot see any of the hundred or so magazines I have already downloaded which means that if I want to have an offline copy I have to re-download them all. As the internet connection here is not very fast this would take a long time.. Fortunately I am on an unlimited broadband tariff but if I was on a capped download tariff I would be even more annoyed.

Richard

03/06/2017 16:29:32

Neil,
I cannot find a copy of the offline reader anywhere. Most of the search references point you back to the Pocketmags site and there is no reference to the offline reader on there. I have downloaded the Pocketmags app but that is useless as it can not find all the magazines I previously downloaded. The promise made when subscribing to a digital subscription was that magazines paid for would always be available to read offline. This is patently not the case any more and so I suggest you need to sort this out.

Richard

03/06/2017 15:14:57

I'm using Windows 10 and when I launch the offline reader I get a message that there is a problem and the program has stopped working and Windows will close the program so it looks like a general problem!

Thread: Pattern Making
01/02/2017 13:58:37

A reference to the Patternmaker's art in MEW 251 prompted me to look up a description of a Pattern Maker that my father had framed and displayed in his office.
He started out as an apprentice Engineering Patternmaker in 1934 at G Perry & Sons Ltd, Leicester. I have his Articles of Apprenticeship and his starting weeks wages were 14 shillings for a 47 hour week!
