I've had a few responses to my earlier lunchtime post, so thank you to all.

I do hope I did not give the impression I was queue jumping.

The website was open for over 70's on Sunday which allowed us to book our first and second jabs despite the fact we had received no invitation.

Our text invite arrived yesterday and the snail mail letter today.

Long wait now until 20th. April for the second jab, can't wait!!!

Feeling a lot better now, just had a big bowl of plum porridge which has perked me up.

Good luck to all who have the jab, guess we were just unlucky.

Rik my daughter who is a key worker had the Pfizer jab, she had rough time for 24 hours, had to take a day off work?

We had our first jabs yesterday morning.

Both of us had an absolutely horrendous reaction, a punching headache, shivers and severe body ache all over. Got so bad early hours of this morning I had to take a paracetamol, couldn't stand it any longer.

Slowly recovering, brace yourself guys it could be you as well.

We booked the test on Sunday, on Monday p.m. received a text from my doctor inviting me to book an appointment for the first jab. This morning we had a letter from the NHS inviting us to book the first jab? So you could/can book before receiving an invite?

Earlier this month, in this thread, I asked the forum for opinions on Zither lathe chucks.

I had no specific replies but nevertheless decided to take the plunge and buy one from Arc.

I chose the 80mm, 4jaw, self centering chuck which Arc currently have on offer at £73.

Have to say I'm pleased with the purchase.

A few grumbles when it came out of the box, sharp corners which need minor fettling and careless number punching around the jaws slots but otherwise initial impressions were good.

I turned the register on the backplate to a precise fit in the chuck recess, drilled and tapped for the front mounting bolts, assembled the two and screwed it back onto the spindle nose.

With a short length of 5/8" silver held in the chuck I was ready for the real test of this chuck. For me to be happy, with the lathe running the bar would have to appear, APPEAR, to be running true. Well it most certainly did visually run true.

I then clocked it with a D.T.I. and it ran out by less than 1/2 thou which for a £70 chuck I would say is very good. Tested it with other diameters with the same result.

Overall at least an 8/10 chuck especially at the price and a big thumbs up for arc again, I have never been disappointed with any purchase from them.

Just had another look at the chronos "soba" chuck, listed as soba but in the details it is classed as unbranded which would seem to confirm what you said.

Had a look at the Arc chucks. I notice they have an 80mm 4 jaw s.c. which is on offer. It also has the front mounting which is what I need. Looks good value and is probably good enough for my needs. Made by ZITHER?

I have bought a lot of stuff from Arc, never been disappointed yet.

ZITHER chucks anyone, opinions?

I've enjoyed reading this thread. every post has had something of interest.

Just bought the Axminster 110mm table and initial impressions are certainly good.

A few glitches but nothing that couldn't be sorted quickly.

Have spent the day making a sub table and mounting a 4 jaw chuck on it.

I would like a 3 jaw as well for the same sub table.

So a question. I notice that chronos are doing a soba 100mm chuck with front mounting for a penny under £70.

The price is right but what's the quality like?

Has anyone any experience of this chuck or soba chucks generally?

All the tiny bits really do test your patience but glad I made it as I will be using in the near future

I like the boiler a lot, I'm currently making one myself.

Are there any details about the boiler you could share i.e. construction methods for both the boiler and stand, type of paint used etc.

Hi All

I have been making the mini bender for 1/16" pipes.

A few more errors I believe!!

Nothing to serious but here we go.....

I think the lever should be 3/16" square stock and not 1/4" as shown. No size given in issue 64 but if you check the fulcrum it has a 3/16" long spigot.

The 0.094" size on the former is wrong, should be 0.0625". the 0.094 is correct in issue 64

There is a size missing for the position of the left hand hand hole in the base, i.e. from the end of the plate to the centre line of the hole. I guessed 1/4" would be ok. Size also missing in issue 64.

There are some issues with the article in 297 which are discussed in the thread

Steve there is a thread on here for pipe bender I have made.

Search for Derek browns pipe bender MEW297 and you will find it.

There are numerous drawings in the thread but a read of the article would help if you intend to make it.

My wife does complain a lot.

Only yesterday the handle came of a pan lid.

I was charged with fixing it right away, which I did.

Of course she complained, not good enough she said.

I'm really pleased that I made the pipe bender in the last MEW.

Not that difficult to make and gives really neat bends.

Made some 1/8" formers yesterday and then made my first component part.

No prizes for guessing what it is?

Well you've set the standard now, no going back.

I suspect you will have no problem maintaining it.

Thanks for the replies.

I considered soft solder David. I have been experimenting on some brass joints with bernz o matic silver bearing lead free solder and templers telux soldering flux and you do get an incredibly strong joint. It may still be a way forward

Hi All,

I was doodling earlier today, planning a fabricated standard for a simple oscillator.

Could I invite comments on the rough sketches below.

I would like use JB weld for all the joints preferably without any other mechanical fixings.

The standard will be around 80-90mm high.

My plan would be to do all machining after it is fully assembled and cured, i.e machining the face and drill/reaming the crankshaft and trunnion holes.

I would add fillets to all the joints with the idea of giving the final appearance of a casting.

I have limited experience of using JB weld, my gut feeling is this would be a strong structure, but I do invite comments, thank you.

Well I have to say I was puzzled as to why there is a spacer under the fixed former.

The "rolling former" has no spacer and is therefore only aligned with the fixed one when there is pipe in between them. In my photo in previous post a piece of silver steel is aligning the two formers.

i can only assume that the rolling former needs to self align and perhaps that is why there is a spacer under the fixed roller to give some clearance?
