I should point out that by "satellite" I mean phones that are slaved to the base station. In no way I could afford or justify owning a satellite linked phone!! Nathan.

Rik, they are plugged into a surge protected 4 way trailing socket. My feeling is that we're also getting it through the phone line. We've lost two phone base stations this year and are now running a mis- matched trio of phones. The satellite phones are always ok. Is that because they are not connected to the phone line or is it because they have less sensitive electronics? Nathan.

Thanks' everyone. I'm considering a Dell 780/790 SFF from Morgan Computers. it comes pre loaded with W 10 64 bit and 4GB of memory. I'll upgrade to 16GB and fit a larger HDD, if I can find affordable PCI low profile graphics and sound cards they will also be fitted. Drivers for my printers are available so that's not a problem and I may just upgrade from CS2 which was a freebie anyway. Nathan.

Is there a way of protecting routers and cordless phones from nearby lightning strikes, apart from unplugging everything?

I should have said that I'm working from a cheapo Viglen tablet via wifi. I hate it as a primary machine!! nathan

Today we suffered a close hit during a very short thunderstorm. The router,my pc motherboard and the ethernet cable between the two, plus the PCI ethernet card suffered damage.It looks like my HDD and 2 external drives are ok. OS is Win 10 32 bit. The cheapest option seems to be to buy a refurb PC. Should I stick with 32 bit or move to 64 bit? The only progs I need are CS2 and Paint shop X9, both of which are legal. All of my MS progs should be O/K. Any advise would be welcomed. Nathan.

Sounds to me as if Sam is describing a surface flotation system, not a fully submerged bag. In that case the bag is sized so that it is oversized for the lift and will not "explode out of the water with strops etc flailing in all directions" and if the bag manufacturer/supplier are involved should be perfectly safe. Neither manufacturer or supplier would wish to involved in a dangerous scheme as they would be liable if it went wrong. If correctly specified the bag should do no more than bounce on the surface . However, if you have a flow and no power source, they are very efficient at doing their job. They will work practically maintenance free and what needs to be maintained can be looked after by unskilled operators. They will also work 24/7/365. I have one on our local allotments site pumping over 380 mtr x 14 mtr head, it supplies a 10 m/3 tank. Over the three years it's been in use only the impulse valve has been replaced . Considering that it is made from common fittings and a booster pump pressure vessel and is only 3/4"/ 22mm bore it has lasted very well. Flow is not great but is constant and the secret seems to be to pump into a large bore pipe(we use 100mtr x 63mm mdpe) to start with, then reduce the bore diameter over the remaining length . Once full this system produces .8 ltr/min , or 1.152 m/3 day . It takes some time to fill the pipework but after that the flow is constant . I'll try to go down and take photos. If the OP thinks he has use for it, I have a Green and Carter Vulcan at 2.5" drive which he can have free. It needs a new or repaired impulse valve but is fine otherwise. Nathan.

Phil, I've been a wood turner for many more years than I care to admit ! My Father taught me in the early sixties. Timbers used for this experiment would be English Walnut/ Sapele/ Honduras Mahogany/Burmese Teak and Cherry, all of which I have in store. I won't touch the Rosewood for the time being!! Nathan.

Vic, thanks for your reply. I do have tools that use round inserts but these are manual. I could make tools for the tool post using the same inserts. Something to look at.

Mike, have you never turned cast iron? With wipers in place and shields over exposed screws clean-up is at least as easy and wood is less abrasive. As I said in the original post I do have and use manual tools on my L5, I just want to speed things up. Nathan.

I seem to remember a thread recently about turning wood on an engineering lathe. I know that this is sacrilege to some people but !! Can anyone suggest suitable inserts for turning wood? I have manual turning tools but would like to speed things up a little. Cylindrical and shallow forms will be what I'm aiming for. Nathan.

In answer to the question Jason posed, there are 3 ebay sellers( to my current knowledge) who list the re-ground size of their endmills/slot drills. All of these are carbide tools and are sold at acceptable prices, I've never bought a new carbide tool. I'll let you all find out for yourselves who they are so that they may have what I want before you all buy out their stock!! Most are known names of quality tooling but I've never been let down by even their "no name" offerings. For HSS I,ll use ARC for preference. Nathan.

Hello all. While I accept that this is not Model Engineering , could anyone advise please. I have one NTE5 BT master socket with both line and ADSL on the faceplate , a MK2 Openreach unit. Infinity broadband works perfectly but the BT badged phones have so much hum on them that on speaker they are unusable. The hum fluctuates with the incoming voice , even using 1471 as a test this still occurs. I have removed the faceplate and sub plate on the socket to use the actual master socket and still get the same problem. The line has been checked by BT who report no fault on the line . The phones are all BT branded/badged and are compatible with each other. They consist of a base station with two sub,s and are all on the same ringmain for power. I can find no appliance on that ring that is causing the hum . My opinion is that the wall wart power supplies are on their way out and that the electronics are ageing , these phones are now five years old. I am intending to replace both the master socket and the phones . Would there be any advantage in also fitting ferrites to the wall wart cables to try to reduce any future appliance based hum ? Should I instead try to reduce any mains/earth induced hum on the appliances ? While these phones have fallen in price and replacement every few years is not a major outlay it does annoy me that they are failing. All advise will be useful. Nathan.

Jeff, a wooden dip would not work on a filling station! They are required , by law, to have a non variable material dip stick. When I was working on filling station installations the standard was a very accurate brass "T" shaped dip later modified to an even more accurate composite "T" shaped dip. Wood was never allowed because of natural movement in the material. Nathan.

Tim, I'm not sure about their available sizes but we used to use " Bandit" ss strapping on commercial pump hoses. as far as I know they are still in business. Nathan.
