I use WD40 for drilling/tapping aluminium or on the bandsaw for lubrication when been cutting aluminium... so it does have its uses in the workshop... for me.

'Kraptonite'... new one on me, but I like it; mind you some of the bolts on my 'made in China' equipment was typically that stuff; changed all to decent 8.8 grade fixings.

Just a small mod that loads of members have done.. during weekly clean up got round to making locating strip for mill vice that's been on the toduit list for some time, the slot was already in the base so no machining needed but had to machine the bar to fit the slots as the vice slot was 14.2mm (?.. oddball size ) & the table T slots are 12mm, so a slight step needed.. but a snug fit in the end.

Thread: Quick change tool post for Warco WM-290V
12/03/2015 18:35:35

I have a Dickson type as pgk's link ( Bison) that I've had from previous machine & what I had to do was machine the boss off the compound slide & make a new tool post stud to fit as I couldn't machine the block (hardened ). If I need the 4 way tool post as originally supplied all I need to do is machine up a dummy collar to fit...

Motor bike chain spray for the gears, WD40 for aluminium, either dry or suds or neat cutting oil for MS, dry for brass,

motor gearbox oil in the lathe g/box, ...should cover most of your needs

As a last resort drill a pilot hole & try an EZ out stud extractor, or drill the head of the screw out & once the moving block is off redrill / counterbore the retainer plate & fit SHCS plus enlarging the access hole a mil or two larger for future access.

Abra file.. that's a name from the past; haven't seen any of those for a long while, I do have a couple somewhere in my 'old' tool box including the clips. I suppose the nearest you would get these days is a 'tile file' but I doubt they would last as long as the good old Abra file...

Just had a look...

So there are survivors out there.. expensive tho', & clips ( see the above ad on same page ).

Thread: Keeeping Machines Clean, New idea or Old?
08/03/2015 13:15:50

Lots of opinions from one degree to another, I generally do a reasonable swarf clean up at the end of my man cave session, tools back in their respective storage locations, a quick sweep or hoover up of the floor, a once a week good clean down & that's it until next weeks clean through. I have a stainless roasting dish under my lathe bed for swarf collection, plus a 1/2" & 2" brush for sweep off of the top slides & t slots, the same on my mill.

Superb engine Graham, although having been in engineering all my life, only just started making models the last couple of years ..converting garage, buying lathe / mill tooling, making stuff to make stuff, to make stuff with etc it seems a long way off to matching your calibre, but not deterred, engineering principles are the same the world over so nothing is impossible.

How did you get the superb curvature on your fins.. are they commercially bought or did you make them? if you made them I applaud your talent. thumbs up thumbs up

Like you I used a window winder from a scrap car, can't remember which, but without removing the drive & checking with a multimeter ( if I can remember how to do it ) I can't give you any figures re. load & start current, 'nuff to say that the fuse supplied in the PWM ( 3A ) hasn't blown yet & the motor runs quite cool all the time.

I'm sure one of our more electrickery savvy members would proffer meter set up to check current, & remind me too.

Have found the description of the PWM...

Descriptions:

  • This CCM2NJ motor speed controller adopts a high power MOSFET with a heat sink and can easily provide a continuous current of 3A to your DC motor or other DC load, high power, high efficiency, large torque, with switch function.
  • Onboard 10A fuse, with Reverse power,Overvoltage, high current protection function, power on LED indicator

Hi

I found that if you double click space bar it moves the last bracket along one extra space & eliminates the dreaded emoticon surprise popping up (dreaded emoticon, normal spacing), ( with double spacing ).
