Thread: Dangerous Practices
15/09/2010 22:13:02
Gentlemen,

I hadn't received my copy of Model Engineer when I read the above somewhat heated discussion. When it arrived I hurriedly turned to Harold Hall's article to see what horrors were depicted therein. I have to say I was rather disappointed. The method of workholding illustrated is, I feel, quite a normal one for the model engineer who is often confronted with having to deal with awkward castings with his somewhat limited equipment. it is a method I have used successfully many times myself.

Such a practice would naturally not be used in production, since tasks are allotted to machines designed to deal with them. As for supporting work in the tailstock whilst parting off is taking place, I have often found it handy to prevent the piece parted off from falling down into the coolant tray. I have never suffered any misfortune as a result.

Can anybody tell me what all the fuss is about?

Hi James,

I have found the relevant pages in The Model Engineer, Vol 102, No. 2561, June 22nd, 1950.

I have scanned them into my computer, but am sorry to have to admit that I am better with old magazines than I am with computers! I literally don't know how to post the images onto this website (or any other website for that matter).

If you can be patient for a day or two, I will contact my local computer expert who will show me what to do.

Sorry about that.

Regards,

Sean Cave.

Hi James,
Information in English on poppet valves is pretty thin on the ground. There is a brief explanation with a quite useful drawing in "Steam Locomotive Design: Data & Formulae", available from Camden.
If my memory serves me correctly, LBSC, who was somewhat of an authority on valve gears, gave a description and drawing of both oscillating cam and rotating cam types in The Model Engineer during 1950. If you are stuck, I could probably dig it out for you.

Thread: conway saddle tank

Hi John,

In reply to your query, the inside radius is 2 1/8", to fit closely to the boiler cleading. The lower outside bend is 1/2" radius, the upper outside bend is 1 1/4" radius and the curve over the top is 5 3/4".

Hope this is useful,

Thread: The Quorn tool and cutter grinder

If anybody is interested, I have found a company in Australia, Hobby Mechanics of Queensland, www.hobbymechanics.com.au, who supply Quorn parts, castings and drawings.

They will send to anywhere in the world, and their prices appear, to me at any rate, to be reasonable.

Hi David,

Thankyou for your suggestion. A little improvisation wouldn't perhaps come amiss.

I found your website very interesting.

Regards,

Sean

Hi Sid,

Thankyou for the suggestion. I'm new to the model Engineer website and haven't found my way around properly yet.

Regards,

Sean.

I am cuurently building a Quorn Mk 1, and am missing the wheel guard. If anyone has one which they can part with, I'd be delighted to hear from them.
