Thread: Face mill decission
20/09/2022 21:30:26

SOD makes a good point when people are talking about moving metal 8 times faster or 24 times faster. I couldn’t possibly do that. I bought a 5 insert cutter from arc just like the one in the picture above and I can’t drive it fast at all in a Tom Senior M1. The vertical head will slow right down if I try to crank the depth of cut up a bit or the feed speed. Maybe my motor isn’t working as well as it should or I don’t have it set on the right pulleys for the variable speed 3 phase gizmo to get the best out of the motor or the motor just isn’t big enough. I can’t see what power it is at the moment as I’m in bed for an early start tomorrow. I have the pulleys set on the middle size for the motor and the spindle. Does anyone have any ideas?  It does give a lovely finish though so it was worth getting.

Thread: Cousins UK
20/09/2022 21:12:29

I have ordered from Cousins abrasives discs, files and an Optivisor on separate occasions. It has all arrived promptly and I had no problems with them at all. But I have never had to return anything yet.

Thread: MOT - am I being taken for a ride?

When my wifes car broke down the AA came out and towed it to a garage as the fitter said he could not look for electronic faults on the roadside. A full AA check on a car costs £128 for AA members (£142 for non-members),

regards

That's interesting, maybe as I had a gearbox overheat and not an electrical problem he went ahead and plugged it in. Either way he told me it was my back left wheel sensor and I got it fixed myself.

Are you in the aa or something similar. If so they will come and tell you what the abs fault is. It could be just one of the wheel sensors that are generally very easy to replace as long as you don't snap it off in the hub. I had a 4 wheel drive gearbox overheat and that was down to a wheel sensor. They are definitely not used just for abs.

I believe any warning light on the dash is an mot fail now since about 2 years ago. I would presume it wasn't on when they trested as they sound like they would have liked to charge you for a fix.

Could you explain to us how you have cut the interrupted threads?

Thanks

Gone on strike maybe.

Thread: What is the finest model engineering you've seen?
22/08/2022 13:33:54

For me it has to be the late Gerald Wingrove. I can't imagine how it is possible to get any better at all round model making. He had such a range of different skills and was a real master craftsman.

take 10 minutes and see what i mean.

I do the same for milling whenever I can. For me it normally makes putting things in the vice easier.

There's a lot to be said for traction engines.

Thread: What would you ban and why? (Definitely tearoom!)
21/07/2022 13:35:01

I would ban people from saying "do you know what I mean" at the end of every sentence or when they stop for a breath because it's very annoying and I am fed up of always answering them with 'yes I do know what you mean" I would also ban people from saying "like" all the time. Eg. I want to go to like America.

Thread: Home made jet engine

That's really good and I love the details like the engine mount, that really makes it stand out from the others.

Did you make your own spot welder too. If so which plans did you use or was it the Gas Turbine Builders Association spot welder made from a microwave.

Thanks

Thread: How I am wasting time
04/05/2022 13:02:18

While on holiday in Cornwall i visited Iron Brothers in Wadebridge a couple of years ago to draw around their patterns for a garrison cannon carriage. They were very nice helpful people and we got chatting about my amateur castings. The governor then took me to see a very large iron pour of a keel and some other bits they were doing. It was quite a spectacle and I was very lucky to be on the shop floor standing on a thick bed of sand watching it all going on from a safe distance. Then it was back to the car where the wife and kids were waiting to get down the beach.

Thread: Workshop warming
29/04/2022 14:30:01

Mick You asked what about infra red. Well that's what I use in a 5.5m x 2.5m workshop and I think it's great. As you say it heats you up and not all the air. It's a 2kw 3 bar and it goes on 3 bars when I first go in and in no time at all I am turning it down to one bar. I did use fan heaters from screwfix but found these to be pretty useless. They did warm the workshop up but very slowly and I was normally only getting warm when it was time to go in. I used to have it slotted onto screws on the wall so I could take it down to either end depending on what I was doing but have since just left it up one end. It was about 40 quid and is shaped like a rugby ball from heatlab off amazon. My workshop is also insulated with celotex.

Thread: Myford Super 7 QC gearbox Mk1 problem
03/04/2022 10:23:42

Brian I had to change the main splined shaft on my gearbox so it had to all come apart. I can't remember specific details but I do remember that it wasn't hard to get apart and back together again. It's a very basic gearbox and honestly you should have no problem pulling it apart and putting it back.

Thread: Tomato seed recommendation?
07/03/2022 18:50:42

I have grown lots of tomatoes and one variety that has been very nice is the Vitoria cherry tomato from sainsburys. It produces lots of nice toms. I normally just buy a box and keep some seed. I also spray the green house with Jeyes fluid using a pump up sprayer, I give it a good soaking and never had any blight or problems.

My Henry has swallowed a screwdriver and a pencil before without the slightest problem. I think he's brilliant.
