Problem sorted latest eddition now showing, but you need flash player 10 or higher to display. If you have flash player 9 you just get no responce. Just updated to version 11 and all working OK. |

Hi I am collecting the materials etc for the twin. I was going to start construction when all the parts in ME had come out, to see if there were any comments from other constructors.

Thread: Model Engineers Boiler Test Code |
23/11/2012 09:17:16 |
Anyone interested in boiler failures should read "Locomotive Boiler Explosions" by CH Hewison ISBN 0 7153 8305 1 These are of course full size, but it does show what can cause problems, and more importantly the inability of official procedures / rules to actualy make any thing safe ! Out of interest Who checks the writen maintenance / test procedure to see if it is correct and or satisfactory, and what will it tested against ? |

Hi David Yes or any other information relating, I assuming that the IC engine build book will be available. but did not know if the bobcat drawings / build notes would be avilable or not.

A question for David C, will there be information on the Bobcat engine at the forthcoming Sandown Exhibition ? eg drawings etc.

Thread: Harrison Lathes |
06/09/2011 18:15:34 |
I agree with Wallace my Harrison is a 6" center height with a 1.5" 6TPI nose it has a flat top bed with the serial number stamped on the front flat at the tail stock end. But it does not fit in with any of the serial numbers on the Lathes site. and it does not look any thing like any of the models shown. But then I was told it was a MOD special. so who knows. Having said that its a good machine, I wouldn't be with out it. |
Thread: How do you keep a Morse taper in |
15/08/2011 19:24:17 |
Hi James I agree it is confusing when they keep changing the names, when I got my Conquest Mill they also had a Conquest lathe very confusing. My mill is very like the Sieg super X2 to look at but unlike the Sieg the column can be angled like the Sieg X1 which sounds very usefull. But I found that it moved when taking a cut, so I have modified it with a removable locating pin to keep it vertical. I also found that when clamping the column up it moved out of vertical in the Y axis so I had to shim it. Apart from that its a great little machine that fits nicely on the end of my bench. David |

I have a Chester Conquest mill which is MT3 which is the same as my lathe so I can use my boring head in both with a draw bar but most important you must not do the draw bar up to tight or you will not get the item out again easly. I had to take the spindle out of the mill after I used a spaner to tighten the draw bar. Now I make sure the taper is clean then firmly thrust it into the socket and then do the draw bar up finger tight, no more.you will find that it takes a good thump on the slakend draw bar to get the item out again. As mentioned above there are lots of diferent threds in use so I made up sets of draw bars for each of my items, one set for the lathe and one set for the mill. I agree with not needing to go to R8 one just needs to get used to the characteristics of what one is using. happy milling |

Hi there
I have a BS0 deviding head and I was confused by the manual as well. I found that I could not get the divisions that I wanted so I purchased a "Division Master" and stepper motor from the Model Engineers Digital Workshop and now I can get any division I want and I don't have to worry about turns and holes. One of the best things I have ever got. Just a very satisfied customer. |

Hi Jason
I all ready have, I just wonder how long the wait will be as I was told that there was a new manual being written, but at the last midlands show was told that the person who was writting it had left so it was down the pan. |
08/08/2010 20:01:39 |
Hi Jason
You are obviously way ahead of me on how to use these things, as I put in my posting to Les I think my lack of knowledge is considerably adding to my problems, so that I don't know if its the system or me or there is another way of getting to the same end result.
I get the feeling that if some one like your self could write a book on a beginers guide to using a DRO for the Workshop Practice series it would be an absolute gold mine for people like me.
Still you have given me some hope and I will get the display out of its box and have another go.
Cheers |

Hi Les
The long scale on the back of the lathe bed is actualy fitted to the lathe at a single point on a substantial beam, this is because the lathe casting is very rough. The beam has jacking screws to adust it in both plains. I could not get my dial gauge to reach down to the beam so I fitted a bar to the back of the cross slide and adjusted the beam so there was the same gap by using feeler gauges. The scale was then mounted on the beam with its protective cover. The read head was fitted to its brackets with the plastic transport bits still attached, these were then removed and the clearence gap of the head checked along the travel of the scale.
I found a video on youtube about drilling patterns of holes using a SINO which made me realise that some times instead of moving to a value to get a location one moves to a zero display instead. I suspect that my lack of knowledge on this subject is considerable adding to my inability to get it to do what I think I want, if that makes sense

Hi Jason
Well I am glad some one is finding the system works ok, It must be me that is duff.
I understood that the 1/2 function was only available in lathe mode ?
The only documentation that I have is the certificates for the scales and the bad operation manual for the display. Is there something missing?
I have down loaded the manual from the link in an previous posting and it is older than the one I have, it also has the same errors in it. |

Hi Les
I was told when I talked to the supplier that it was easy to move the readout head from one machine to another, so that was the plan. I asummed that the settings for one machine could be stored and just called up when the readout head was refitted to that machine (Wrong!) Each machine has its own mounting arm with the leads form the scales perminantly attached, but you have to go through the setup routeen each time the display is moved. also when I mounted the scales on the machines there was no instructions as to how acurate this had to be so they were setup using a ruler and feeler guages. having read the other posts this would seem to be totaly inadiquate.
My basic problem is that I don't trust the readings being given as they do not agree with my phisical mesurments and I cannot get the other advertised functions to work at all.
Having spent a fare sum of my budget on this system, I am looking for any soution to salvage the situation. Thank's for the link I will have a look at the item you sugested.
Cheers. |

Hi there
At the back end of 2008 I got a SDS6-V3 and five scales from the dealer in Hertfordshire, three of these scales I fitted on my Chester mill, and two on my old Harrison L5 lathe.
The worn lead screws on the lathe was the main reason for getting the system.
I am a beginer in model engineering, and my background is in telecommunications, so I am not very conversant with how these devices should work or be used. The manual as stated above is of very little use to a beginer, and I have had several conversations with the dealer which have not been very productive. As a result the DRO display has spent 90% of the time in its box under the shelf. I thought at first that it was me being dub but seeing the other posts has been slightly heartening. My question is is there another display unit out there that will work with the scales I have got and do what is clamed in the sales blurb? because as far as I can see the SINO is not usable.
