Thread: Wonky threads using die

I also use a tailstock die holder, like this.

Thread: Heat resistance of PLA
17/11/2021 07:25:15

Thanks for the info about annealing, I'll try it with my knife handles.

16/11/2021 16:33:07

I printed some kitchen knife handles in PLA, they last about two months of dishwasher abuse. Some bend slightly and some split - but strangely it's not delamination; the cracks are perpendicular to the laminations.

Thread: Best "v" thread form

Posted by Keith Wyles on 16/11/2021 07:52:33:

Like many things perhaps the original reasons have been lost to history. I was, am, just curious why we arrived were we are. Is it more to do with standardisation and ease of manufacture than sound engineering principles.
Equally Whitworth spanner size shrunk to match BSF or at least a new standard allowed that to save steel (money), was the initial size because of the quality of steel, or an extravagance or for added strength or to reduce rounding from badly fitting spanners.I

The good thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from.

I thought it strange that despite asking about the best V thread form, the most basic difference, ie. the V angle, was ignored.

15/11/2021 14:26:16

Strange that nobody has mention the thread angles. 60° for Metric, 55° for Whitworth, 47.5° for BA, and 29° for Acme. Maybe there are some other too.

I downloaded SE-CE2020 a few months ago, and it installed OK on my Win10 Home system. I've just downloaded the 2022 version, but it won't install - something about a problem with my system. I then tried to install it again in order to get the exact words of the failure, but it installed OK after I'd removed the 2020 version.

Thread: What O-ring is this?
14/11/2021 13:39:45

Hi Brian,

Nick's observations that my measured dimensions (6.2mm x 2.4mm) are very close to 1/4"x3/32" (6.35mmx2.38mm), and I couldn't find any metric sizes that were closer leads me to think they are Imperial. That's what I'm going for.

+1 for the humble 6x4 bandsaw. I got mine quite a few years ago and it's done everything I've asked of it. I made and added a hinged vertical table so I can use the saw in the standard horizontal mode, or, by simply hinging the table down, can use it with the saw vertically.

Thread: Music on TV Programmes.
13/11/2021 12:12:37

Getting back to the original theme of this thread, I've just seen a few minutes of BBC's coverage of the Lord Mayor's Show. One 'float' was really an advertisement for the musical version of 'Back to the Future' that, apparently, is showing in the West End. A guy roared into view in an old DeLorean, got out and sung a song. He had an exaggerated American accent and I couldn't understand one word - not a single word.

Thanks Les,

The link you supplied looks promising, I'll give it a try.

13/11/2021 07:39:12

Les,

It actually measures 6.2x2.5, do you suppose a 6x2 would do the job?

Wow, that is scary. Well spotted John.

Thread: Texas Instruments TI-5020
12/11/2021 16:50:06

Your TI-5020 beats my EL-545 by 2 years. It too is a totally solar powered 10-digit scientific calculator. I've never experienced the fragmented digit problem, but maybe that's because it's 2 years younger.

Neither eBay nor Amazon helped much, and TheOringStore are outrageously expensive - it's cheaper to replace the torch. A semi-retired guy at Rothemberger (Sievert) thinks he may have one in a dusty drawer somewhere. He'll let me know next week. Maybe I'll get lucky.

12/11/2021 12:14:41

It's actually rather difficult to see, but it looks like the ring only sees the gas when the valve is open.

12/11/2021 11:19:49

My ancient Sievert blow torch gave me a fright today - it burst into flames as I was using it. I was able to blow them out and I wasn't burned, but it was rather scary. The flames originated around the valve, so I dismantled the handle and reckon I need a new o-ring. I've got a box of o-rings, but none of them fit.

Does anybody know which one I need? The photos show the torch handle and valve with the o-ring separated. Sorry about the focus, I blame it on my phone.

Thread: Telephone / Internet Scams

My landline provider provides the same facility described by Paul, and the number of nuisance calls has noticeably declined. Once in a while one gets through and my response is generally to say "Did I request this call?" Followed by "You know it's illegal!". And then I put the 'phone down.

Neither my wife nor I could be mistaken as being young, and we both have problems with sound tracks on TV and cinema obliterating dialogue in favour of incidental music. Strangely, it doesn't happen with the sound tracks of old films where speech is clear and mood music only apparent when needed.

Personally I reckon that the youngish producers are totally disinterested in the older generation and want to cater entirely on the young. To my old ears the sound tracks in cinemas are far too loud for comfort - possibly to cater for hearing loss in lovers of pop music.

Thread: GPS as a low-speed Speedometer
08/11/2021 07:36:13

A little while ago I sent the following email to the authors of a GPS app running on Android.

My wife and I both use Trip Recorder, she on an Alcatel and me on a Moto G. Last week her's registered 3.2 miles and mine was 3.1 miles for the same journey. Today hers said 3.7 and mine was 3.5, again for the same journey. We start and stop recording at the same time, and walk together. What's wrong please?

They never found a solution.
