Hi Jason. I've drawn another sketch but can't exactly see the way forward. If you could, when you have the tine, give me a view of the section and the cut rotation you mentioned it would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've been playing with different approaches the past couple of evenings without a lot of success, so suggestions please on the method of generating cooling fins on the top of the cylinder head, I'm not concerned if there're vertical or horizontal. Thanksfins.jpg

Back to playing with the cylinder head. How do I anchor the 12mm diameter sketch to the top face of the head in order to extrude it to form a counter bore. Thanks.counter bore.jpg

Sorry to bother you all again but I've spent quite a few hours trying to sort this out for myself. I've followed the tutorial to the letter but when I apply the midline constraint it locks the left hand line to the origin point but not to the sketch. I establish the plane by clicking on the z axis in the tree Which creates the blue box shown in fig 32.thumb screw 2.jpgthumb screw 1.jpg

No gain without pain, as the saying goes! Thanks to David and Jason.m6 thread.jpg

Still no joy. One screen shot shows the screen with a helicial line to the right of the sketch, but when I click OK there's a spring coil appears for a split second to the right of the sketch before the screen reverts to the other view. On this occasion the pitch is highlighted in blue, this is the first time this condition has occurred.thread 3.jpgthread 2.jpg

Now I fully appreciate I've not carried out an instruction that won't allow me to get past this stage, but I can't see what it might be. I sometimes get a spring coil appear to the right of the sketch that disappears when I click OK, other times the OK tab is not illuminated. thread.jpg

Thanks Jason, the section to be revolved needs to a continuous sketch.

20/01/2019 17:25:54

I still seem to be doing something wrong. The vertical sketch line was drawn from the top face of the head to the intersection of the horizontal sketch line. I've also drawn the vertical line to pass through the head to a point beyond the base and above the horizontal line with the same result, the sketch doesn't revolve as the OK tab isn't illuminated. capture 3.jpg

Thanks to all. The snipping tool is a better option and I saved it as a jpeg file. Today is turning out to be a day of firsts as I also successfully changed the mixer tap on the kitchen sink!!!!

I'm playing about designing a cylinder, cylinder head and piston. The cylinder was pretty straight forward but I've got a problem with the head. Every time I get to the stage in the screen shot where I rotate the sketch of the dome I get the result you can see, but when I click OK in the revolve boss box all the rotated detail disappears leaving the original sketch, which I have to delete as the rotate boss won't allow a second attempt.    The red sketch line showing through is a previous attempt that I can't delete as the return arrow will only allow me to go back one operation.capture 2.jpg

Thread: Saving an image as jpeg using windows 10 paint
18/01/2019 11:32:35

Bog basic question here. I want to post screen shots in the 3D CAD thread. I use windows 10 and when I paste the shot in paint and try and save I get three options, save as image, video or 3D project. Image saves the shot as png, as does the save option which opens in my document folder. I've googled saving as jpeg and the answer is to open file and change to jpeg, unfortunately there is no file option when using and exiting paint in windows 10. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Will generating thread forms be covered in the MEW tutorials? If not how do you go about it as I've tried playing with the helical part of the software where all I've succeeded in doing is producing a spring like coil running along the centre line of the diameter I was hopefully going to create an external form on.

Hi. All. The method you all describe is exactly what I'm doing, however when I go to extrude (remove metal) the sketch all the information, sketch number, to depth and the distance are displayed but the OK tab is no illumined and so I can't finish the operation. I don't seem able to upload screen shots and so I can't graphically demonstrate the situation.

05/01/2019 10:56:10

Some real progress, I've generated a component and conventionally machined it and also produced drawings. I don't seem to able to upload screen shots to demonstrate this. I have encountered one small problem, there is an 8mm tapped hole in the back face of the component 21mm from the base and on the verticial centre line. The horizontal centre line of the component is 20 mm from the base. Drawing the sketch is no problem, but extruding it to 25mm deep is. I assume I need to create an axis line for the extrusion to follow but I don't seem to be able to armed with the knowledge I've so far gained from the tutorials.

I like to think that I'm starting to get to grips with the basics as I tend to spend at least a half an hour a night generating complex models that I wouldn't have the first idea how to set about machining. I realise the monthly tutorials are designed to show different modelling methods and so I've followed this month's tutorial to produce the clamp block occording to the instructions althought it would be easy to produce just using the sketching tools. When I try to trim the obsolete construction lines in fig5 I get a warning saying 'to trim the constraint lines will unlock the constraints' and a yes or no option. If I click yes then I can't extrude the block, if I click no then I can't trim the excess construction lines. Sorry about the spelling but the spell checker seems to have taken a Christmas break!

Hi. Neil. Can't claim it as my own, lifted it from the Machinist Museum face book page.

Back to basics. I'm trying to assemble the four components of the crank assembly exercise. I can move the wheel until the through holes are in the correct orientation, click and Esc. When I open the link it appears as a cross and there doesn't appear to be any way of changing its orientation without changing the orientation of the wheel. I've tried opening the link first and positioning it in the correct orientation for assembly. The crank handle is the only component that opens in the correct position in relation to the link. I've tried going back to the files and making sure that the component is saved in the correct orientation but when opened for assembly I get the same problem. I suspect I must have missed something when I was generating and saving the components. Thanks

Hi. Jason.

First off, thank you for all your input, it can't have escaped your notice that my IT skills are some what limited, but I really want to get to grips with the basics of this software.

The only exercise package that I can locate is the one I'm following and in my own defense there isn't any notice that I've come across that informs me otherwise. I don't have the benefit of duel monitors and so the only way I have of generating the images is to read about ten pages of PDF, take notes, go back to the part and execute, save and exit then repeat the process, this way mistakes are bound to occur. My plan now is to copy the exercise from your link onto my wife's laptop and start from scratch reading the tutorial one page at a time and generating the part with the instructions directly in front of me. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks again.
