Thread: Quick Acting Knob Question
05/04/2014 11:41:08

Hello Jon,

Look back in MEW 212 for Gary Wooding's article on the Centec mill modification, he has a drawing for a jig to make two off tilt nuts on the same lines you are thinking of. The angles he used aren't quite as big as yours but it is all related to the bore size.

Hello Neil,

Yes, I agree but if that was it's sole purpose there are simpler ways of providing the information. My guess is that it had a wider use altogether than that [but what?] and with the gears at 6 degree intervals it would not be a precision piece.

Well then Graham, away you go, I have plenty to do and no wish to get in anyone else's way.

Perhaps just to explain my reasons a little further from earlier on in this thread. I would think it appropriate for Brandon to make the running with the London firearms people since he is the certificate holder rather than whichever of us is prepared to help him out and then stumble through the inevitable questions that are sure to arise.

I agree with Mike that this is a sad reflection on the times we live in now when a man's word is under examination in a sensitive area like this.

The very last thing I would want is a visit to my workshop to see what I am doing there and then find I have to register my activity because I've made a gun part. I agree with the others, rather reluctantly, that he would be better off altogether in going to a registered professional for the work. Technically it is a doddle, politically for the novice a minefield

Thread: Need contacts with high speed lathes (to make a firing pin)
04/04/2014 11:04:22

Hello Brandon,

I'm sure it would be a job of simplicity for any of us so minded to take it on, but like the engineering firms you have approached already I'm sure I speak for all in that we would need to be reassured that we would not be contributing to or enabling an illegal weapon to be brought to life.

You say you will provide a contact number for the police in London; I imagine just entering that area would be absolutely fraught with complications " I see Sir, how did you get this request and where do you live? " being just the start of it. The SWAT teams would be upon you in a crack.

So, a bit more work on your part please to increase the transparency is needed I think before you are likely to get a volunteer.

Kind regards

Brian

Hello Russell,

I can't identify it but the gear works out to 24DP for the nearest whole number

Hello Bazyle,

Thank you for that, another link in the chain. I won't say anything about the extraction if you don't. Was there anything on the outside gearing while you were there?

Thread: EN1A mild steel strength
03/04/2014 09:55:44

Hello Lee,

I'm sure a collar made from EN1A would be fine for the duty, certainly on the shaft in question.

What you may need to allow for is provision for the grub screw, if that is how your job will work, to grip the shaft without raising a bruise or burr which will ulimately interfere with moving the collar about.

An improved design is to make the collar as a close fitting fit with a split on one side and a nip screw across the split to clamp the collar onto the shaft. A better grip is then assured without damage to the shaft

Thread: Gearbox model South Bend lathes
03/04/2014 09:42:53

Hello Bazyle,

I specified Southbend only because I didn't know that the lathe had been cloned as much as it has and with the request aimed initially at the USA I thought that might fit in better with their culture. If you can supply Boxford information instead it will be just as useful for my purpose.

So, are you able to provide Metric gearbox information? Particularly, a decent quality photo of the gearbox face, one that shows the figures clearly, the 'outside' gearing table that goes with it and the pitch of the leadscrew [I assume 3mm but I might be wrong].I am presently OK for the imperial version.

If you can't help with that, is there another Boxford owner reading this who can? I am happy to collect information from anyone who can supply it!

Thank you in advance

Brian

Hello Bazyle,

Yes indeed, that is the information I am after.

Thanks for the advise on Yahoo group management I didn't enable the email notification fearing that would be like opening the door.

Hello John,

Thank you for the links, I have actually joined the Yahoo user group and posted my questions there as well, One drawback to loining that group seems to be in receiving the previous large number of exchanges on any SB lathe related topic or observation; never have I had so much email to plough through!

However, if I get the information I am looking for I can always de-list and vanish back into the background. There are many clones as well, notably Boxford, that might be more fruitful avenues of exploration.

Kind regards

Thread: Cutting a hole in Cast Iron

Cast iron is best cut dry, no lubricant

01/04/2014 18:24:15

Hello Lee,

If you drill right through at the pilot drill size, then turning the sheet over and cutting again from the back will get you another step further. It also allows all the current swarf to fall out and give another bite of the cherry from the first side.. You may still have to change the hole saw if it has gone blunt.

You might have hit a hard spot too but at 1/4 penetration it sounds a little unlikely

Clearly my crystal ball is shot, no pictures but others can see it so all is well!

Hello Abdur,

It would help us a lot if you could give a little more information, any markings might be useful and a picture or two would be invaluable; there were a number of models in the days when Zytos were popular that looked somewhat similar.

Thread: Gearbox model South Bend lathes
31/03/2014 11:19:03

Good morning all,

I am looking for information please on South Bend lathes equipped with gearboxes to see if it is possible to expand on the concept of simpler gearing.conversion to other 'languages'

I would greatly appreciate help with both models of g'box, especially the Metric version

A photo of the front controls showing the chart and a simple description of the outside gearing set up [spindle to gearbox input] would also be welcome. What leadscrew pitch was standard for a metric model?

Many thanks in advance

Thread: Pin spanner wrenchs, what sizes type are there
30/03/2014 18:32:30

Hello Steve,

They aren't difficult things to make, the pins can be made from turned down cap head screws with the ends sized to suit your holes.

I would follow that route rather than trying to find one to suit.
