Thread: Used Lathe Pinnacle PL1340C Gap Bed

Stuart

so both phases are 180 degrees apart?

or in phase?

I can understand that both are at 240v relative to neutral

and 2x 240 =480 live to live but surely they will still be in phase

I would have thought that a standard sanitary silicone rubber sealer would work perfectly and come apart again if need be

araldite might be a problem with coming apart easily

Evo do their “sticks like s*** “ adhesive which sticks almost anything and is waterproof but again difficult removing it at a later date

So was Stuarts post a typo about 180 degrees and 500v between phases rather than 415v ?

What you will have is as you say, a transformer fed from a single phase (2 wire) HV overhead line.

A common neutral but with 2 single phase 230v ( but could be up to 253v ) live supplies 180 degrees apart. You would expect somewhere in the range 440 to 500 volts between them.

Where does this supply come from ?

how do you get 2 phases 180 degrees apart?

Robert have you ascertained yet if the lathe is 2 speed?

14/05/2020 14:44:47

I thought earlier you said you had 3 phase?

2 speed motors are fussy things...you can probably wire it for 240v 3 phase then put a VFD on it but then it will be single speed

or replace the motor with a single speed 3 hp motor 3 phase with vfd or single phase.

but if you have 3 phase in your workshop leave it as is then all those speeds to choose from.

you select the speed range 1 or 2 with a switch

It sounds ok to me ....I’d consider my lathe to be quite quiet in use but on occasion when i sent video to people it sounds loud and rough

its got a 2 speed motor on too

you will struggle with vfd if you needed to

Thread: Archived bbc programmes available now

Just been watching some bbc programmes from the 1950s that have appeared on bbc iPlayer

one series called “eye to eye “ has a comparison between London and New York in 1957 narrated and music by Larry Adler

i did a double take as the riff that LA was playing was smoke on the water surely written in the 70s though Richie Blackmore said it was from an inversion of Beethoven’s 5th

anyway good viewing in these lockdown times

Here’s a pic of the roll in question

it doesn’t need to be wound round a straight stip of it would suffice 504f8a58-64de-40b8-9d66-4feb683f0658.jpeg

Bob

i messed about with cheap inverter welders and scratch start tigs but after a while i spent £400 on a esab buddy tig

Its light weight if you need portable HF start and comes with everything you need to do MMA or tig (DC)

so no alloy welding

Best of all it makes me smile everytime i use it which i always feel makes a tool great

also you will get your money back almost when/if you sell it

I dont think it looks too bad in the photos about just what i'd expect a working machine to look like

he could have cleaned it up more perhaps

if you can get that for £1200 or so i'd go for it...its abig lathe for little money

I've had colchesters for 35 years now and never needed a part that wasnt a standard part or electrical .

lead screws i've made and nuts too

How many industrial stanfdard machine needs parts that the owner couldnt make?

Get your mate to look at it working if its good buy it

I'm not too far away if you need some eyes on it

Thread: Cheese grater strip/band
12/05/2020 19:37:36

Brian

the prongs are too long for this application

ill try and get a photo of one tommorow off the press.

the zester type of strip is thin stainless with a grid of square punching from behind making little pyramids of sharp points which grab the roll

12/05/2020 16:59:55

Not sure how to word this

i have 10 shafts 20mm dia and 1200 long made of alloy and they had a strip of like cheese grater/lemon zester type material wound round the shaft in a spiral.

this is the take up shaft on a printing press for a wash up roll which is like very strong kitchen roll..the operator winds the material round the shaft and the rough surface grabs the material and allows it to be rolled up on the discard roller.

the zester type stuff had fallen off them all

ive knurled a few of them to see if that works..with some success

but the operators want it like original.... really grabby..

where could i get such strip material ?

Just run your mill in reverse?

Thread: Air supply to test run steam engine.

Paul

really any compressor will run that for testing purposes...how much to spend is up to you

a cheap one from Lidl or aldi will do but be noisy (very)

you can charge it up somewhere and then run your model for quite some time without it powered up

a bambi or junair or similar compressor will run continuously with only a whisper
