Thread: Electric motors for cars
28/11/2020 12:49:19

What sort of motors are used for retro fitting into cars?

i was watching a programme about a company converting a variety of classic cars into electric powered

the motors they were fitting were so small

i’m used in the day job to motors that i can lift being up to 5kw or so

but a 25 kw motor is fork lift territory

so what sort of a motor generates 65kw that you can almost fit into your pocket?

then the end plate is B plate and has 4 m8 bolts to hold it on

by the look of the motors they are 3 phase

this is a link to a motor

https://www.electricclassiccars.co.uk/motors/dual-brushless-ac-motor-test

anyone any experience with them?

Thread: Tig Welder

Martin

or anyone else who buys a digital machine by rtech

theres a slight glitch where if you are using the memory locations set up for your different materials/jobs

when you save a set of parameters that’s then the default on start up

so if location 2 is thin alloy on ac

and the last location you saved ( no 6 say) is dc thick steel

when you turn on it will go to is no 6

so if you doing a job on your thin alloy and switch off for a tea break when you switch back on all your settings are wrong.

Spoke to rtech and they confirmed that this is how they work defaulting to the last saved location.
So i set up no 9 with a really long pre flow and saved that
So as long as i remember to always save no 9 again after setting up another number and saving it
When the welder is turned on it goes to no 9 which hopefully will alert me when the arc doesn’t start.

hope this helps

It doesn’t look like it may have died in service and no dismantling has taken place that you can see

as David says get as much extra parts with it

the chuck c spanner for one

it looks an easy restoration

i had an earlier mk1 ( with cast levers on the gearbox) for many years which served me well before i upgraded to a mk1.5

Ive had a dc esab tig welder for some time and i can do an acceptable weld on MS and stainless

but a few weeks ago bought a rtech welder as championed by doubleboost on YT

what a steep learning curve alloy is

I’ve used up a full 9 litre of argon and still not got acceptable welds

i can run beads all day long and they look great

i can butt weld now in 0.9mm up to 3mm thick

but outside and inside fillets no way yet

i’ve just gone and got a big argon bottle ...much cheaper gas cost..

Steve

do you do much aluminium welding with that welder?

Its a 2 pole motor if its running at 2800 rpm

perhaps the motor will pull about 2 amps on 240v wired in delta/mesh

increase your vid current to suit

do you want 9mm advance for 6 revolutions? Or 9mm advance per 1 revolution?

Thread: Taper sleeve adapter
05/11/2020 16:03:08

I would start by making a dummy male internal taper that can be mounted in your lathe? Concentrically

then cut your internal taper to fit that. Mount the adapter on the dummy taper and cut the external taper

I don’t know about your mill but many don’t have the slot to remove taper tooling if its to be held in with a drawbar.

the adapter wont have a tang on it just an hole in the top to pass the drawbar through

you may be able to twist the adapter out if you cobble up a tool to hold the spindle and use a long spanner on the adapter flats

or you may get lucky with a rod down the drawbar hole catching on the top of the adapter to loosen it
