Thread: Parting off on Myford lathes
18/01/2011 22:58:07
Hi All,
It's all about mechanical feedback due to geometry of the machining setup, especially the fatal dig in one can get with a front mounted parting tool. The front tool gets deflected downward and into the work, the rear is deflected upwards and backwards away from the job. It's quite surprising how much a parting tool can deflect under cut, especially noticable on an interrupted cut, eg on a square bar.

Thread: Model traction engine wheels

Thanks for those links, sorry, don't have much in the way of photos as yet.  I'm OK for the cylinder block, as I'm using a spare that I had cast for my Fowler Z7S ploughing engine about 15 years ago, - about time it got used for something!

Hi Jason,
Thanks for that info, I shall follow it up. I am deigning and building a Fowler B6 Road Loco, on rubbers, in 1/5 scale , I can't cope with the logistics of a 3" scale one, and 2" is a bit too small.

Does anybody know of any firms that will fabricate steel traction engine rims?
Size is typically 16" ( 400mm) diameter by up to 4", ( 100mm) wide.
Preferably in or near Essex.
