Thread: dougal 0-4-0 barclay

All engines of this size need as much balast as possible, if you can fill the tanks with lead and have a top up device from a tank on the driving trolley. On my Gemma the running boards are formed from a bar of steel instead of angle, looks the same and adds some much needed weight.

A proper valve gear fitted to this engine and she runs very well indeed.

For me too the Y4 or Blackwell as she first appeared 20 or so years ago, would be a suitable engine for the first one. simple, 4 wheels, outside cylinders, and easy to move.
In fact I am doing a 6 wheel version to go under a Tina, Tina for copyrite reasons also has a twin brother tram called Toby!

For someone with a bit more skill there is our dear Fair Rosamund with the backing of laser cut frames, stretchers, castings, curently in the magazine and supported by Poly Model Engineering. I am told that the wheel patterns are particulaly fine with a slim hub
which should also make prospective builders of Metro happy.

Thread: An earlier 517 design coming soon
16/04/2010 11:54:02
Dear friend Neville contacted me some time ago due to my great interest in everything about these dear 517 tank engines. I had in fact collected from several model railway friends some wonderful drawings of these engines through the years, now counting almost 57 varieties!!! I started on the early version mostly as I could then paint a Great Western engine blue green as favoured by Wolverhampton. They even did their drawings round the other way front facing right
to be different, and this continued down to the guys on the shop floor who faced by having to cut out two parts of a steel tray to miss the steam brake brackets put it the other way up, and drilled the holes in a different place.
I have just filled in my miss drilled holes in the rear steps plate, mig welders are wonderful things and especially when you are doing 2 engines = 4 plates = 12 holes!!!

Must get back to work as the second try at the wheel pattern has just come off the cnc router.

Regards

David Scott.

Thread: Building a GWR Bulldog locomotive
16/04/2010 10:41:40
Keith included a photo of the curved frame Bulldog but never did any drawings of it.
I am slowly building a Bulldog with a slightly different rear step, and a curved frame Duke having got a drawing and done some research.
The curves do look good in 5" gauge, you can tell that Dean admired women and later Churchward didnt!!!

David Scott.
