Hi,

MEW 220 was delivered to me today Sept 9th 2014. P.17 "Exclusive Reader offer" expired on the 1st Sept.

Apart from that I support the move to a wider range of content.

Steve

Steve not sure if it could be done but if you have the digital subscription also could you not take advantage of offers ??

Maybe Neil could shine light on that please!!!

I use a gas lift draughtsman stool I transfer from the wheelchair to it as I can still stand minimal tho. I have castor wheels which replaced the plastic type and the base is alloy not the plastic type. I can roll all round the workshop and out onto the driveway with some ease. I have clear vision of 90% of what ever I am doing. I do warn tho things can get hairy at times my most recent being a broken base LINK

Weather wise yesterday was a disaster but the day improved when LOML returned from her spinners and weavers group. I knew one lovely Stanley UK made No4 was coming but not the 4 books from one of the other members.

Tomorrow here in Australia is Fathers Day so to all those Australian members Happy Fathers Day may the day be full of things you desire for the workshop.

LOML returned home from her spinners and weavers group with 4 books from one of the other members who's hubby passed away some time ago.

I have had a quick browse/flick through only at this stage but I think my favourite will be the Recycling Use and Repair of Tools

Thanks Bandersnatch .

Still reckon saving to an external device would be ideal and transferring between OS would be great to do if it was easy such as is with PDF and other types. Also to be able to do off-line after all if you're paying for them its like paying for a hard copy.

Thread: Not a "modeller"!
02/09/2014 04:42:07

Getting back to "Modeller" or "Not a Modeller" I think in many ways we are all "Modellers" of some description be it actual or in thought. I for one run many things through my mind before tackling them. I do on occasions draught on paper or PC or even make a solid object as a test run be it scaled or full size.

I have heard people called a model citizen, a model employee, a role model. If I recall Frank Lloyd Wright was classed as a model architect. Many a tradesman I have worked along side of classed as life models to follow.

For me yesterday an interesting day. Further progress on spinning wheel No2. A visit from the plumber to rectify the hot water service. Wich he had to come back a few hours latter as i still was not coming out the tap.Seems not only did the safety bi-mteal strip stop the pilot light from being re-lit but some how there was a blockage in the pipe at the tap.

A visit from a mate also into OT Rose engine work, bring me a much needed piece of English oak for a leg for the spinning wheel.

It being a bright sunny day meant a good day in the workshop.

I have always seen the definition of "Professional" as "One who is paid" to do a job.

However looking at world wide politicians and many CEO's and some business owners who are raking in the $$$$$$. Yet stuffing up the world economy, life styles etc etc.

I have seen those who volunteer in roles of local community run sports, social clubs run them better un-paid. Mid you corruption still creeps in there too.

Hello Tony,

My understanding is that it is as Jason says and our website declares:

NOTE: We strongly recommend that you ensure that you download your magazine issues whilst connected to Wi-Fi due to the file size. Once downloaded, your magazines will be available to read without any internet connection.

Pocketmags IS compatible with W8.1

Anyon who is NOT able to resolve their problems through these routes, please email me with as much detail of the problem as possible and I will pass it on with a request to get it sorted, but PLEASE try to follow the above route first.

Thanks,

Neil

Thanks Neil for this info as stated elsewhere I am not happy with the quality of Pocketmags digital edition visually.

The statements here by some who have already pointed if using older win versions it may become impossible to transfer the digital copies downloaded to later win versions. Just try opening some old original Win Office files, thank goodness for Wordperfect Office.

However all may not be lost for those using older Win versions I have not done it yet but locating the storage folder and doing whats needed to transfer to new system.

I wonder also if in saving the files and software to a USB stick or external HDD maybe the best option that way its always portable.

What a beautiful day 22C shed time all going well............then a visit to the WC went to wash hands and no pressure from the hot water a small squirt was all I got. Checked other taps silch nothing although cold water was ok.
HUM gas hot water service, don't tell me its sprung a leak? Nope its gone out and will not restart auto sut off has closed it all off.

Tried ringing Estate Agent as we are renting, closed Sunday, tried Estate manager still nothing. So sent SMS and emails including to Landlord 1rh later no reply so tried all numbers again finally got onto Principle of Estate agent and landlord (who said ring estate agent DOH why didn't I think of that).
Its Sunday finally call from someone who cares the estate manager she has located emergency plumber and he's over 50k's away and no idea when he'll be able to get here.

Maybe I should ring Asia ???

It put paid to a good afternoon in the workshop no good getting all hot and smelly and not being able to shower tonight.

scmewcopy1prior.jpgscmewcopy1.jpgsc3zomx3.jpgsc12zoox2.jpgSome screen shots of both Pocketmags and MEW's

The problem here is screen capture reduces quality in both.
Mew's takes time to clear up but at least it does readable at zoom x 2 for me.

Pocketmags as you can see each zoom allows just that much reading to be done while MEW's at zoomx2 can be read without any trouble. sc1.jpg

I am disgusted at Pocketmags uploaded version, it is fuzzy making it hard to read even zoomed up its still fuzzy.

It's called ghostscripting and it's probably to meet copyrighting requirements

It makes a document readable by humans but not much good for computers or printing

Unfortunately a lot of detail gets lost in the process and the document becomes computer unsearchable

Huh???
Sorry I am paying a high premium especially being an overseas subscriber even if I was not I expect better quality than I am getting as any one would.
As for copyright again i am paying for it if it was a hard copy I'd be demanding a better quality printed version.

29/08/2014 03:52:45

Thanks to the team for putting the magazines together its not an easy task.

I haven't finished reading 219 yet 1/2 way through it and enjoying the read.

220 I only have access to the on-line Pocketmags and the forums copy so far, another two weeks or so to wait till the hard copy arrives.

What I have seen as I have flipped through I will be reading a few of the articles for sure mostly the new ones. I will leave most till they are completed as

1 - I don't have the machines mentioned although there is always something to learn from whats being done.

2 - I hate reading only part of an article. (I recall reading a mag when just a teenager with a 3 part series it took 3 years before part 3 was finally published. This took some doing I believe and was mostly threats by mature readers. I think it was an auto magazine)

I will say tho I am disgusted at Pocketmags uploaded version, it is fuzzy making it hard to read even zoomed up its still fuzzy. In zooming up it then means having to scroll all over to read even just one paragraph.

The forums how ever slow it maybe to load does clear up enough to read without zooming up or zooming in just one step. The slowness maybe my connection ATM some other sites are also slow to load.

Having produced, vehicle/ambulance workshop booklets and user/driver manual as well as travel brochures and newsletters for the clubs I was involved with I can understand Neil's and the teams time and effort somewhat.

Bill LOML was just as close at the time helping clean up from the mornings wood turning. Good job all the hammers wee out of reach.

Every time I see that clip it reminds me of my parents in reverse rolls not quite but I bet dad wished he could have done similar LOL.

The chair I'm sitting on now has similar geometry, it doesn't seem to have an excess of metal, probably about 3 mm thick, with some webs across the inverted U shape. The castors are pushed into holes in the die casting, and drilling these through would indeed weaken the structure. On closer inspection my chair will not fail through metal fatigue, it's made of plastic! Ian S C

Edited By Ian S C on 28/08/2014 14:23:16

Ian it didn't snap/crack at the hole but about 10mm away. I won't say the castors didn't add to it but after 7yrs use by me in a harsh environment.

The plastic base ones well like the wheels they don't last long and I have seen them snap the whole arm off anywhere from the castor area right to the centre join. That use has been in offices by lighter persons than myself.

I have had thoughts of making a tube frame and new centre of steel as this is a long term situation for me.

There are wheelchair type situations which raise you up by elec/hydraulics cost tho is so much out of reach its cheaper to buy a new small car.

Irrespective, don't you just feel like a Balloon when something like this happens!

I really need to get myself something along the same lines but without the wonky foot

graham.

Graham I wish I had been a balloon the fall would have been a lighter one LOL

As I just mentioned to Michael its been in use now over 7yrs the new castors just installed 2 or 3 weeks gone and no sign of cracks the old castors had worn down enough so the breaks/locking devices were not holding. its a bugger trying to transfer to a moving stool. The spare stool with older type castors LINK

Raymond,

Please forgive me if this sounds critical; but I suspect that your improvements may have been a contributing factor.

... Those fixings for the castors look non-standard for a stool, and may have created some "stress-raisers" [ in the mechanical, rather than the emotional sense ]

MichaelG.

Michael I've been using the draughtsman stool now for some 7 yrs it has not had an easy life goodness knows how old it was before I got it 2nd hand. I know of many who had suffered similar fates and worse during the years draughtsman used them. The place I buy my castors from have done the same with their plastic office chairs much lower of course.

The stresses I put the chair under moving about the workshop with the alloy as thin as it is although well webbed structure it has been a good chair.

Glad i have a spare the same.

28/08/2014 07:42:01

I went for a spill off my workshop stool.
One of the ally feet broke and I found another cracked latter on when checking.
Its just 2 weeks since I put new wheels on and when doing so didn't notice any signs of cracks.
I was sitting at full height as its a draughtmans stool and toppled over backwards sort of, some injury nothing major a twisted knee and ankle and hurt pride.

I have a spare stool so can head back out tomorrow.
