Thread: Help with 5 pin switch connection
18/07/2023 06:33:27

Hi Luca, that makes sense, the A1 being connected to the neutral side of the coil, so in your case, it's acting a bit like an e-stop. Good to hear you've got it sorted.

Regards Nick.

17/07/2023 22:27:48

Hi Luca, I don't know why it arrived without the A1 connected, but it's possible the wrong switch was in the assembly line by mistake, as you could just replace it with the one without the A1 connection.

Thread: A trip to the scrap yard
17/07/2023 21:47:50

Hi Sonic Escape, no good feeling sorry for the machines, as when it gets to a scrapy, it's just scrap to them. Just get what they allow you to have before they ruin it.

Thread: Help with 5 pin switch connection

Hi Luca, with your switch the A1 connection is used with an emergency stop button, so the A1 should go to one side of the emergency stop, and the other side of the stop should go to the neutral side of the output side of the main switch. If you don't have an emergency stop button, the A1 should be connected directly to the output side of the main switch.

Thread: r.i.p. Christmas cards?
17/07/2023 14:26:18

Hi Nigel. I guessed you meant second-class when I first read it. Anyone using second-hand new bar coded ones though, will get caught out straight away, as the bar codes are just like snow flakes, no two are ever exactly the same.

Thread: I'm on Google Earth
17/07/2023 10:25:47

Hi, you won't see a street view of my place, nor that of my nearest neighbour, as we are down a 300 meter private track, which they would have no legitimate reason for coming down. But you can see our houses on the satellite image, although mine is just the roofs, but you can see my car, but not what type or make it is, but if I was outside when they took it, I was probably under a tree canopy or in one of the dark shadows cast by the house.

Thread: r.i.p. Christmas cards?

Hi, well personally I think it's every ones choice to send greeting cards or not, so if you don't wish to send any to anyone, then don't, and I don't think there should be any campaign to have them stopped as there are plenty of people who look forward to getting them. Of course the original idea of sending greeting cards, was to send them to those people that they wouldn't be seeing during the festivity to which they relate, but these would just be a hand written greeting on a plain card, but of course it got commercialised, but many people do make their own cards to send, which adds a personal touch, which my elder sister did up to a couple of years ago, when she had developed dementia.

Both of those cylinder chains would scare me, the bottom one can slip under the bottle and you have reduced the angle iron ability to restrain the bottle with your wood 'Improvement'

Hi Dave, I can't see any problem with them, although I wouldn't bother putting the bottom one on even. Every industrial one I've used, only has one chain, and they are more or less fixed at the same height proportionally, with a full size cylinder. My own Supermig 170/1 has just one chain, about the same height as the one Taf_Plems has shown, and it doesn't even have any type of bar at the bottom, in fact the cylinder hangs over the edge of the platform by a little bit, and its never been a problem.

Hi DiogenesII, I don't think so, and I think it looks like this Eyed-Hawk moth there are quite a few that seem to look very much the same though.

Hi Nick

The magic phone app was straight in there with Eyed Hawkmoth.

Thread: Trying to comprehend the Impact Energy
12/07/2023 09:05:12

Hi MichaelG, like Lee I can't tell you anything about the impact energy, but I do agree that putting heavy pressure on the machine won't make it cut any faster, in fact it is more likely to deaden the energy. I used to get this with people using industrial hammer drills, where they would sometimes have two blokes pushing on it and getting no where fast. Let the machine do the work.

Hi DMB, yes in the UK any commercial place has to have persons holding a certificate of training of the abrasive wheels regulations 1970, to change abrasive wheels, which does include angle grinders etc, and those persons should be registered in the firms/companies files. Anyone using grinders for their own use, don't have to have anything, but they may have to for changing wheels for anyone else. However, the dangers and pitfalls are just the same, and the safety aspect should be treated the same, as they can maim and kill wherever they are used.

Regards Nick.

The 1970 regulations were repealled. see

Robert.

Hi Robert, thanks for drawing my attention to this, although I should have remembered about it, as I had to go through the training about five years ago, as my then employer had a visit from the H&SE after I believe a disgruntled ex employee reported him for a number of things. one thing that the H&SE pointed out, was their wasn't really enough people trained for abrasive wheels, because those like myself who had a certificate, were very often all out on site, which left no one in the shop with any training, so he had everyone attending a training course, even us who had the certificates. However, all the basic stuff is still in the current release.

Hi Adrian R2, bench grinding wheels are balance with chalk by the manufacturers, but they have specialist equipment and a good understand of where and how and weight of, to introduce the chalk into the porous wheels. As Andrew Johnston has said, the better quality grinders have provisions incorporated into the design of the grinder for the use of balancing weights. You should not attempt to modify the design of a bench grinder, and as Noel has pointed out, never put the dished washers on the wrong way round, as there must be an equal area of contact and pressure on each side of the wheel. If the vibration can't be solved by dressing or replacing the wheels, then scrap it, as it is quite likely to bite you back at some time or other. Never get complacent with grinders.

Thread: Workshop clearance

Hi Alister, basically yes, the Vernier you have to read, starting with all the divisions on the main scale to the left of the 0 on the Vernier scale, which I've mistakenly said as 1 in my above post, you then have to find a line on the main scale that is inline with a line, or the best match, to the right of 0 on the Vernier scale, which will be a 0.XX value, and in the photo I've shown, the caliper is opened at 15.95mm. The digital one you can obviously read straight away as being 10.96mm. Vernier's are not limited to metric measurements though.

Hi Alistair, Digital and Vernier often get confused, below is a photo of two calipers, the top one is a digital caliper and the bottom one is a Vernier caliper. Generally digital and Vernier should not be used together.

digital v vernier.jpg

The photo below shows the Vernier scale better, which is the 1 to 10 on the slider, which you will not see on the digital one.

Hope this helps.

putting alontoast99 into ebay search engine produces no matches, can you post a proper link.

A list of what's for sale would be good, I'm fairly local, but don't want to waste your or my time on a speculative trip

Hi Duncan, if you click on the Advanced just to the right hand side of search, then under the Advanced search, tick, by seller, and then paste or type the seller's name into the blank oblong box, and then scroll down to search, all the items that the seller has, will be listed.

Regards Nick.

Thread: What did you do today? 2023
06/07/2023 21:36:52

Hi Neil, the dish came with a satellite finder, I've never used one before, but I've never put a dish up before.

satellite finder.jpg

I did measure the angles the old dish was set at, and have put my new dish very close to the measurement I made, so hopefully, the new dish won't need to much adjustment. I took the old dish down without altering anything, and just clamp it to the wall as shown, and the signal strength remained the same and works just fine.
