Thread: Is Aluminium wood primer any good at preventing exterior wood rotting? |
12/05/2018 10:53:18 |
Unfortunately the trend with modern wood treatments is “that they allow the wood to breathe” which is the root of rotting problems, the finish is micro porous allowing moisture to penetrate and hence spores to create rot. Because of H&S legislation members of the public are protected from any chemicals which would be effective in preserving the wood structure, hence not being able to obtain creosote etc. At my last house some 40 years ago I erected a wooden fence and treated it liberally with a mixture of proper creosote and old engine oil, yes it smelt awful for a while, but it is still standing. My advice would be that aluminium primer will only act as a very temporary surface shield to the wood, you need to treat the wood with a product that will penetrate into the wood and kill or inhibit rot getting a hold. My vote is if you can get hold of “ proper “ creosote then that will probably last years longer than modern products that are available, yes it will smell for a while but is that a penalty if the wood is going to last. Modern “treated” timber is a joke, since they removed the arsenic compounds from the treatment compounds it rots away in just a couple of years. We have a pergola that I put up in our garden 25 years ago using treated timber that was from before when they removed the arsenic and the pergola is still sound with no rot apparent. Good luck with your project, the secret is going to be to keep the water away from the wood as much as possible so perhaps concrete floor and wooden side walls built on dwarf concrete walls perhaps 9 inches high. Thread: Strength of Cast iron |
12/05/2018 10:26:07 |
Remember in the 60’s, in my youth and well into motorcycles, I was refitting the cylinder head on my Matchless G80 and was tightening the cylinder head bolts, high tensile steel bolts, cast iron cylinder, and in those days I was usually over enthusiastic when tightening bolts, before I had a torque wrench, well one of the bolts let go with a mighty crack and the spanner flew out of my hand with the top half of the bolt. No damage to the cast iron threads of the cylinder which is a testament to how strong threads are in cast iron. I can’t remember having ever stripped or pulled out threads in cast iron. Dave W |

Hi Mike, if you pressed 1 it would have connected you to someone somewhere but the important thing is you would be charged for the call at an exorbitant cost. The whole purpose of the exercise is to get you to connect to them so they can charge you and then they keep you talking as long as they can, it’s just a scam which makes them a lot of money. Thread: Aircraft General Discussion |

lI remember when working on Britannia’s in the Air Force during the 60’s a hammer was found in the tail plane of one aircraft, it was inscribed with the name of its owner and was presumed to have been entombed since the tail plane assembly had been built by Bristol’s. The hammer was parcelled up and addressed to the original owner at the manufacturer’s and despatched. Apparently when received back at Bristol’s it caused a whole load of trouble and it’s return was not appreciated. It was not uncommon to find items inside areas of airframes, one presumes that with the advent of shadow boards and more stringent tool control, incidences of “ lost” tools is now much less frequent. Lost tools have on a number of occasions been responsible for bringing aircraft down with catastrophic consequences. Dave W

Thread: Metal spinning without the need for skill, well almost without the need |

Chris, you made metal spinning look so easy dispelling the myth that it is some form of black art. Watching your videos I was heartened to hear the high noise level from your lathe, I have a Warco BV20 lathe which is a small geared head lathe and I was always of the opinion that my lathe was excessively noisy, have revised my opinion since hearing yours, the noise from mine is not so bad after all. Thread: Service in 2018 |

Used Chronos a few years ago for a couple of items, was disappointed with their service, they took over a week both times to send out the order haven’t used them since so don’t know how they perform now. If I need anything and it’s available on Arc’s website I order from them, their response times have always been brilliant, even when I ordered the large table and leadscrew for my X1 mill it arrived next day, can’t get better service than that. No connection with Arc just a very satisfied customer. Dave W |

Sam your comment about prisoners in jail threatening officers families is a real issue. A few years ago my daughter was director of health, in charge of the hospital wing, at Strangeways prison, things got so lively that staff were instructed to withhold their names and addresses even from police officers if stopped at all out in the community, this was because Strangeways was home to some of the most dangerous drug villains in the UK.No longer a problem for her as retired from all that stress. Just seen on the news that the Kew Gardens Greenhouse has been refurbished at a cost of £41,000,000 surely we have higher priorities for our hard earned taxes. Here in East Sussex our roads are disintegrating at an alarming rate, there are better transport infrastructures in third world countries. Our hospitals are clogged with patients who are fit for discharge into the community but need a degree of social care for which our system can’t fund, result a stagnating health system unable to function effectively. These and other circumstances need funds, how can we justify refurbishing a Victorian greenhouse ahead of other pressing social issues. This post is not meant to be political it is questioning the sanity of our spending plans. Dave W |

Neil, is the reference to the law firm who defend the drink and drug drivers an indication of how morally corrupt our society has become , the British legal system at one time was the envy of many democracies around the world, now it looks as though it’s going to hell in a handcart along with many of the valued institutions of our country. Thread: Anyone been involved in a car crash recently |
01/05/2018 17:14:53 |
My car is a Honda, last year the garage wall jumped out and hit the front bumper, not much damage just a paintwork repair nothing else. Just after the incident the car went in to the local Honda agent for service and they noticed the damage and would I like them to quote for the repair, I agreed and clearly indicated it would be out of my own pocket, not an insurance job. The quote was £220 which in the light of present escalating costs I thought extremely reasonable so I arranged for them to go ahead. Job took two days and I was given a loan car for which they charged £5 their standard charge they are required to charge by their insurers. No hassle they are super efficient, a family owned and run concern with the Honda franchise which is a breath of fresh air compared to national enterprises. In respect of insurance companies I am insured with Zurich not the cheapest in the marketplace but my philosophy has always been you get what you pay for, had a no fault claim with them a few years ago and again no hassle everything sorted satisfactorily and with protected no claim bonus no penalty on my premiums except of course the yearly increase that everyone has to endure.
