Thread: Tooling to buy with Warco WM250 and WM16?
04/02/2018 11:11:17

Personally I would only buy things that can't be added later. Obviously you will need cutters and a means of holding them and a way of securing work to the mill. After that have a budget available for bits that you need and order them as you go. I see rotary tables have been mentioned, I have one and have never used it. I am not trying to say that rotary tables are no good, just that I don't use one. It can be very frustrating knowing that you have a large chunk of money sat in a drawer when the thing that you need to "crack on" is on hold until finances are available.

I can promise you that you will require a huge number of bits and pieces that you could never guess.

Far better in my opinion to let your new hobby take you where you want to go rather than try and map it out in advance.

Thread: Cat Litter Recommendation
21/01/2018 13:20:16

Hi,

Here is a link to Artisan Foundry which is the supplier used by Myford Boy

**LINK**

I have never used them and have no connection.

i did try using cat litter to temper sand but wasn't successful, so I would be interested to know how this works out.

I had come to the conclusion that it might be prudent to buy the necessary materials to see how the whole process works before trying to make shortcuts as there were to many variables for me to work out what was going wrong.

Hi,

It looks like an archer quick change chuck on steroids.

I had one with only one holder smile p and decided to trade it for beer tokens which were more useful.

This one looks similar to the one I had.

That would rather depend on:

  1. The size of the can
  2. Whether it is Metric or Imperial
  3. The breed of worm
  4. and whether they are left or right handed

Thread: Mach 3 doesnt see UC100 contoller
12/01/2018 14:55:16

What state are the led's in?

I have recently had a problem with my UC300 where on switching the PC and machine on it appeared dead. Powering both machine and PC down and rebooting solved this ( I have no idea why ).

Make sure that the PC is connected to the internet as differences in firmware will prevent it from running, these will be corrected if there is a connection.

If you need to extend threads on bolts, try using Chinese made bolts. These use CCS which is Cream Cheese Steel and can be cut with a sharpened cucumber if need be.

Hope this helps smile p

If you do a search on eBay you will see, in the top right hand corner, the word advanced. If you click this, you can scroll down to "sold listings" check this box and you will see all results for that search and the prices that they fetched.

In my opinion this is the best guide for how much something is worth.

Ships in Nelsons time had outside toilets, they were called heads.

Brian

They still are, even though they are indoors now.

My Mum was a tracer in Portsmouth Dockyard before the war. One of her colleagues was working on the designs for a new warship and caused great amusement by lettering BRAINS FROM SEAMEN'S HEADS on her drawing.

George

They are not outside the ship though!

Thread: Elliot 10 inch shaper motor pulley

If you would like a printed copy of the manual PM me your address. I have 2, but no longer have a 10M, no longer having work for it. They are great machines, but I think Brian's has a non-standard motor as they are usually around 900 rpm.

This will enable me to lose a tiny part of the mass of bumph which is too good to throw away!

It is much clearer than the NEMES copy in the link.

PM sent.

Many thanks.

David.

Many thanks to all

The (I assume original) three phase motor is still fitted. I will have a look to see what speed it is. I think I have enough information to proceed although in what time frame I'm not sure.

The link to the manual was a huge bonus.

Thanks again.

David.

Hello,

I have just acquired an Elliot 10m which is missing the motor pulley. Does anyone know the dimensions or have any kind of drawing of it? Also does anyone know the type of belt that it used?

Thanks in advance.

A question for Neil:

Is it permissible to post a link to a PDF copy of "Testing Machine Tools" seventh edition.

If not; I shall of course refrain.

MichaelG.

Technically it is in copyright in the UK and the rest of the EU until May 2019 IIRC and the copyright is owned by the publishers of Machinery's Workshop.

I tried to get permission to publish decent extracts last year and was unsuccessful.

.

Thanks, Neil

It's as I assumed.

MichaelG.

Or of course one can simply search Google for "Testing Machine Tools Schlesinger" and download it!

David.

Ps Thanks Michael for bringing this to my attention.

Thread: Article Suggestion "White Elephant & Why"
15/11/2017 18:21:48
Posted by Martin Kyte on 15/11/2017 15:33:41:

Did the phrase "white elephant' originate with the practice of gifting such an animal to someone you wished to ruin. It was of no use, you could not get rid of it but it was extremely expensive to feed. So maybe No. 6 should be something along the lines of "it's too costly to run but I ws given it and I daren't chuck it out?"

Can't for the life of me remember where I heard this but I think it must have been an India practice.

Maybe someone else knows.

regards Martin

I believe it has its origins in Siam. White elephants were considered divine, they automatically belonged to the king and because of their divine status could not be used for work. When given one you were expected to feed it and look after it. I imagine that an elephant of any colour can eat quite a lot and not being able to use it for anything, it would be quite an expense.

(done without reference to google so go easy on me please)smile p

Thread: Ebay bed blocker

Glad I'm not the only one annoyed by him. I have a standing search in that category that is limited to a 50 mile radius from me, he appeared a while ago and I wrongly thought he'd give up as I can't imagine he is selling anything.

I'm glad you posted this as I have been meaning to block this seller from my search results, which I will now do.

I realise that I could be guilty of sexism as this could easily be a she but don't care!
