Thread: What Did You Do Today 2019 |

Had a good day at the Doncaster show. Lots of nice models but I still think Mike Sayers two Bentley engines are absolutely fabulous. Lots of people selling 'used' kit so was able to increase my R8 tooling for new Gates mill, some tips for various cutters, a few bits of other tooling and a few castings and gears for Sanderson Beam engine kit which is ageing away till I have the skill to attack it. I can get from Lichfield (Staffs) to Glasgow and back on less than one tank of diesel in my 2 ltr Mondeo and thats not hanging about at slow speeds. I can easily do the same in my diesel Renault Trafic with fuel to spare. When you stop at any Motorway services and see the significant number of cars in the car parks how are they all going to be able to get charged. Even if you said only 20% required a top up charge that's still an awful lot of charging stations required. I have a feeling it would be like going back to the days of fuel rationing when you had to queue for ages for fuel and push your car till it reached the pump. I for one do not fancy sitting in the car gradually moving along in a queue to fill up with electric. When I do a long journey I do not want to have to stop on the way. I fill up fully before I leave home and do not intend to fill up till return home. If I have to stop then a 5 minute pee stop is all I need. Colin |
Thread: Bridgeport |

Very Nice. I have just installed a Gate PBM-2000 which is a Bridgeport copy. Perhaps I had better make some covers for the table. Neat idea for the drill chucks etc on the side of the knee. My main power panel is located in that spot. Colin |
Thread: Sump Plug |
01/05/2019 11:28:56 |
I would suggest one of the specific sump plug wrenches that has a square hole in the end of the casting. There is usually two different sizes moulded in (one each side). The wrenches are heavy enough to be able to apply an amount of judicious hammer force to free the sump plug. Is it a steel or aluminium sump. If steel be careful the threaded part in the sump does not tear out. Colin |
Thread: DIY magnetic DRO |

Chris, I had not appreciated you required two sets of readouts. Colin |

Chris, Having Looked at the link you supplied where do you get the £1000-£1200 from. The three axis M-DRO set is only £520 complete. I have used the Yuriystoys Touch-DRO software with M-DRO magnetic read heads on my Cowells mill and lathe. Colin |
Thread: "Screwing" a car round a corner! |

With a LSD once you have got into that oversteer it is great fun to "steer" the car using the throttle. More throttle and the tighter the car turns in, lift off a bit and and the car rduces the tightness of the turn. Colin |

Got to say, your never to old to enjoy doing doughnuts, or having the back of the car hanging well out. Oversteer is great fun, throw in a LSD (limited slip diff) in as well and even more fun. I'm now 69 and still enjoy running my Caterham 7 on the track and touring with the lads round Scotland, France/Belgium/Germany and Los Picos in Spain. Used to love my rear wheel drive Fords: , Anglia, Cortina, Xr4i, RS2000, FF1600 race car. Nowadays main vehicle is either 2ltr Mondeo and a my work Renault Trafic van, both front wheel drive but still prefer Rear wheel drive for sheer fun. Colin |

Yesterday I trammed up my nice almost new Gates PBM-2000 (Bridgeport clone), which was delivered last week. My Excel surface grinder and Chester Super Lux have gone to make space. Now need 'T' nuts to fix the vice. Need to find a way to empty the small amount of gunge in the sump (1/2" deep) (looks like oil) before refilling with new suds. It is April 2011 machine but table and spindle looks as though hardly ever been used. Today was spent in the fresh air watching the V.S.C.C sprint at Curborough Sprint Course near Lichfield. Lovely warm dry day and over 100 vintage cars from Edwardian era onwards. Fraser Nash, Bugatti T35's, Bentleys, Rileys, you name it and it was there being raced. Colin

Does anyone have photographs of the file clamp mechanism in a dismantled state. I would like to see how it works before dismantling it. Thanks, Colin |

Do Alibre contact us when the 6 month free trial is over to see if wish to purchase or is it up to us to contact them by the end of the six months. Colin |
Thread: Using a propane cylinder for partable compressed air. |
06/04/2019 14:06:53 |
Dive cylinders are rated at either 232 bar or 300 bar and have to be tested on a 2.5 year basis. This test includes a visual test after having removed the valve, test of the valve and hydrostatic test of cylinder assuming it has passed the visual and valve tests.. There are plenty of cylinders, 3 ltr, 10 ltr, 12 ltr and 15 ltr available on Ebay. You could purchase one of these and for your own peace of mind have it tested at local dive shop. If it fails the test it legally has to be destroyed. If it passes it is stamped with the date it passed. Most vendors will list the tank as being in-date or out of date. In date will cost more. Thread: Cincinnati 207MK restoration |

My dad worked at Cincinnati from 15 years old (1936) till he retired at 62 ish I can ask him but as he is now 98 not sure how much he will remember. He worked all round the world as a service engineer and was Senior Foreman or higher in assembly. I know he did a lot of work on the Hydrotel millers. Colin |

Its definitely not light. Two of us picked it up and got it into my van. It has he overarm for use with saw blades and currently has a thin file clamped in the saw clamp. Runs nice and quietly. Looks as though I need to make the Roller Arm support bracket. Has anyone got a photograph of the same and or some dimensions. Need to fit On/Off/NVR switch as currently just has a 13amp plug fitted on motor. Need to find.make some files. Colin |

I cannot get the sweep to work whether I have a singe solid or a thin walled tube. It just refuses to create. If I look at the status of the line which the sweep should follow it says the Sketch is Open, No. of loops 1. When I look at the sketch the point where the line (supposedly) intersects with the circle it looks a little different to your picture. The cross and circle look at lot larger on your schematic. Any thoughts? Thanks, Colin

I am drawing up a simple adaptor to connect dust port on a grinder to a vacuum. Once I am happy with it I wish to convert the 3D CAD data into a file my 3D printer can then use to print the required item. I have created my basic shape and changed diameters as required. What I now need to do is cut the smaller diameter at 45 degrees and rotate the cut piece around to give me a 90 degree bend. What is the best way to achieve this. I have followed the MEW tutorial exercises but not found anything that covers what I want to do. Any suggestions please. Colin |

I have Turbocad 2018 pro and earlier versions but have really struggled to use it. I download added the trial AA3D and was able for follow the tutorials quite easily. I prefer the written notes in MEW and gave read through but not used as yet the trial design on the Alibre web site. This runs to a significant number of pages. I prefer written notes to videos that I have to keep stopping/starting/reversing. I want to be able to produce designs that can be 3D printed. Would also like to be able to produce plans for some bits I made for Cowells lathe and mill. Colin |
