Thread: Engineering Courses - Midlands

They also have some beginners welding courses. Also a slightly more advanced course where a certificate can be gained and you can concentrate on whichever option you wish to take up, MIG, TIG or MMA.

The topic of engineering courses for beginners to this hobby has come up a number of times and people have lamented the unavailability of courses.

South Staffordshire College with campuses in Cannock and Tamworth is running Introduction to Milling and Turning Courses. The Cannock course is on a Tuesday and the Tamworth course on a Thursday. Both run from 6pm till 9 pm. The course lasts 10 weeks and costs £100 according to their website prospectus (for some reason their Facebook page says £150). I have let them know there is a discrepancy in their pricing, not 100% sure which is correct.

Cannock course starts Tuesday 20th April and the Tamworth course Thursday 22nd April. Contact phone number: 0300 456 2424.

I have had my machines for a number of years but still think I am likely to learn something so have enrolled.

Course description: Working in our advanced engineering workshops, you'll learn using industry standard machinery and equipment. You will learn the practicals of turning and milling, health & safety, drawings and measuring equipment, feeds and speeds, work holding, tool setting and a range of turning and milling operations.

I understand these have not always run due to low enrollment. We cannot complain at not finding course if those that are being advertised are not supported.

Hope this will be of interest to some of the new starters to this hobby.

I have been trying to put a registration number on retention. Because I built the car as a kit it appears they will not do this online. Ring up to query the situation and get told to use the webchat facility. A robot works out whether he will allow you to converse with an actual person, and if so you still have to talk over the webchat. Its an appalling way to have to do things. There is enough technology available now to have call centre staff working from home and answering telephone calls. Eventually had to send V5C and other paperwork along with a cheque and just wait for a response.

If you look at the link below on the modelenginemaker site you will see how Jo has fitted a DRO to her BCA.

I've just printed 4 out of 5 'T' slot fillers from one of the thingiverse links. It is the one with the little raised pimple to hold them in the slot. Seems to fit well. Just need to print one last one.

Certainly have a few ideas now.

The float is (I understand) 2 1/8" diameter, 1 5/8" tall, and with a 1/2" bore through the middle (for the bolt holding the float bowl in place). It has a concave base and a convex top.

Not sure my CAD ability will let me draw this up. I have Alibre Atom.

Tug,

Glad you have sorted the job but as you say, still a mystery. If nothing else it will make those of use with Clarkson Autolock chucks take a moment to double check our milling cutter fitting and tightness in our chucks.

Thread: Magnetic v-blocks - how useful these are?
24/02/2021 20:39:54

I have used mine to hold a length of rod whilst it was cross drilled, and it worked a dream. I was struggling with standard v blocks as the clamps kept getting in the way of the drill chuck.

I have seen a couple of pictures of the float but will hopefully get a look at the car very soon. Carving of balsa or rohacell sounds a possibility.

Thread: How to hold work for drilling on an ML7 using tailstock pad
24/02/2021 13:20:32

I have used a small V pad on the Cowells lathe for drilling cross-holes in pins. I used a very small machinist clamp to hold the item being drilled. The holes was only .75mm dia.

Just spoke to Tenga this morning following their advert in back of ME regarding stock clearance. I would have liked a 3/8"threaded collet but the last one went a few weeks ago and they are not having any more Imperial ones made. They could offer me a Metric 6 or 10mm threaded. How does £195 each plus VAT and postage sound. I politely declined the offer.

Thread: Fuel Resistant Filament
23/02/2021 15:10:25

I have been asked whether I could print a float to fit in a Solex downdraught carburetor. Other than the issue of whether I can draw it in CAD, which remains to be seen, is there a filament available which would be fuel resistant. Would it even be feasible to produce a completely airtight/fueltight float, that would float.

Thanks,

Colin

Would this be some form of casting no., especially as Johann and Matts machines both have the 1104.

MC Black,

Im with you there. I want a manual where can look back and forwards easily but if more importance would be a size of print I can actually see. I am fed up if having to use big magnifying lenses to read tiny print.

I must admit I was quite surprised how few comments I had on my Resurrecting a Stuart 10V. Having said that the comments I did receive were extremely helpful. In turned in to much more of a basket case that I expected but came out very well in the end after major surgery to the cylinder. Well major surgery as far as I was concerned maybe not to others.

Mine all sit on the splashback. I milled slots in a few lengths of 1/8" 1" x1" ally angle.

I was fed up of them being spread all over the suds tray.

Nigel,

Funny you should mention the M6 clamping set. I have just bought one to use on the small fixture plate I made to use in the vice of the large mill. Its very handy that they also fit the Cowells Mill and I found yesterday they fit the BCA rotary table slots. So quite pleased.

I can concur with the comment re collets creeping out of the standard collets. I have a couple of the threaded ones but not the other two. When I milled the GHT pillar tool table on the BCA I had the collet creep.

I spoke to the guys at Tenga a couple of years ago and they were thinking of closing down then.
