Bountyboy, I've an illustrated booklet relating to your MARK l l KENNEDY portable power hack-saw, and new, they were £28-0-0 carriage paid. The NON powered units were £14-0-0, again carriage paid, no doubt by British Railways with a three wheel Scammel lorry. and trailer. Does any one know what the price is of a second hand one today, I haven't seen one advertised for a long time. John

Regarding disassembling lead acid batteries and rebuilding dud cells, when I was in the army in 1953 we had a plant in Egypt doing just that, we made distilled water and diluted Vitriol acid for the batteries, so nothing new. For ingenuity and keeping banger going, travel round the Middle East and India, where you lorry drivers with G/boxes apart on the road side, tyres with patches on the outside, remarkable people, but needs must. Forgot, straight eight engines, running on four cylinders with length of copper wire to the spark plugs. Amazing, are we about to copy them, I don't think so, we have lost that what it takes, to quick to get on the phone . John

Have you had a look in HPC gears in Chesterfield or Davall in Hatfield in Hertfordshire. In the past HPC would make special for a customer, but things have really changed. John

Back again folks, the guillotine is one similar to the picture John P posted, thanks for that John. I would like it to cut ex washing machine, cooker, and fridge sides which I hack out using my angle grinder, ready for making a cabinets for another WS projects. John

I would appreciate the opinions of readers of the bench top guillotine, on the market by machine dealers advertising in MEW and ME magazines. Are they any good at all ?. I have an angle grinder and several pairs of tin shears, would i be wasting my money ?. John

The start capacitor value will be between 80/110 micro farads and the value is not critical and the run around 10 micro farads. The start capacitor, the big one is a special AC electrolytic with a short time rating, once the motor is up to about 70% of full speed, the centrifugal switch opens and disconnects the capacitor. The run capacitor should have a working voltage of 400 as its in continue use. Both caps in parallel when the motor is stationary and one (10) when running. Most multi meter with a capacitance range, have working voltage of 9 volts and motor capacitor really need to be tested at full working voltage, 339.4, hence 400. John.

Regarding Micro wave cookers, once discharged the capacitor, the high voltage diode are useful and the wire from the transformer for recycling. Some PC boards have useful components which can easily removed with a hot soldering iron. And, as some one already said the cabinet, if you can make a new door and chassis the cabinet are very useful, for a power supply etc. I might add some gas cooker, gas boilers and washing machine are a good source of sheet steel. Ignatz, please tell me where you got the oil gun tip from as the club needs one, and yes, PTFE tape will easy cork it oil tight John

Martin, a couple of years or so ago some on this site posted a series of picture of how he located the Star point on his motor and then reconnected it in Delta worth locating. Not a difficult thing to do, but a rewinder will be able to help out for a fee, think £50 plus an hour. John

Hello Anthony, OK about the repair once you have the board out, but tell us how you gained access to the board. I thought the envelope was glass as before, is it now clear plastic ? I bought three lengths of LED with self adhesive backing, I attached it to some 25mm plastic angle and secured them to the roof of my workshop, all driven via an old computer PSU Easy to carry out, no main wiring involved, other than to PSU and what a transformation, lighting wise. Using LED strips you can cut them to length, as they are diodes in parallel and with careful use of the soldering iron join odd bits up to size. John

I've been using pallet wood to make hedgehog houses, made 20 and given them away on Freegle. One pallet had really hard wood runners (thick bits), I offered them to the wood burning neighbours, but no takers. Most folks don't have wood saws any more, just get the man in.

I, and a couple of friend successfully made clutches for our super 7 following an article in MEW and which are still working OK today. I think it would also fit the ML7 just as well. perhaps a reader one might know which issue it was. John

RS safe blocks, very useful when carrying out repairs, but H&S thought they could be possibly dangerous so out they went in Colleges and Schools. I got mine at a Mobile Rally several years ago. Another useful bit of repair kit is a 13 amp socket outlet box with a length of flex and a 13 amp plug attached. ( A modified very short extension lead in effect) The socket outlet NEUTRAL is brought out externally, via very well insulated loop so that you can place a clamp type meter around the neutral, and measure the current without any disconnecting. (I have a UNI - T UT 210E , these clamp on type will also measure DC loads) The load is via 13 amp plug as normal, which is inserted into the adapted box. John.

Ah, but you don't get an Earth terminal on the Aldi meter. Some thing very special about an Avo, that special smell when you open the box and then see the quality workman ship or should I say Ladies work. Should any one be really interested in AVOs and all the they made and their repairs. I suggest you go to "Vintage Radio" where there are some experts and collectors. Not me i have only got eight. Scarborough Mens (Mates) Shed. We are still on the lookout for an operator manual for this machine, or, as they were marketed under different names by different suppliers in 1970/80 any make will be OK. Also, has some made an attachment to prevent the head from moving around (about) column when lowering or raising the head, I'm sure some has, folk were ingenious those days. There is a kit on ebay for the small diameter column, ours is 115mm in diameter. Perhaps there is some one out there who is the owner or was an owner of one of these machine who would communicate with me, initially via a PM. John

An old friend of mine used to use "Pallet Ways" a firm in Middleborough area they would move a lathe or mill for around £80 three or five years ago. Must have been satisfied as he used them a lot. John

That capacitor shouldn't be even warm, electrolytic capacitors age and dry out and then become in effect a series resistor, hence the heat. Have a look on RS, Farnell, Rapid, ESR for a replacement and look out for the continue band along its length that is the negative, got to get it soldered in right first time. I have some where a complete door system, motor, arms and I think two hand sets etc, was all working when my friend moved to a double garage bungalow.? Might you be interested ? John
