Sure you can bend HSS, its like any other steel, but you need to follow makers advice on heat treating!
Files are queched in mercury I belive to recieve optimum hardness. Ive been told modern HSS of some makes can be red hot w o loosing hardness or get microscopic cracks. Ask the manufacturer! |

Yes, Ive read about those, and been looking if such bands are still made, but found none. A diamond inpregnated band would be good for some things I belive! |

I would reccomend people to get a sample or look in the online version of the Brownell´s catalog, its an American gunsmith suplier; they have long narrown files with different cuts. Such files wouldl be ideal for making die filer files out of!
Also, yesterday I recieved a tool catalog from 1961, I collect such items. In it were a pic of a filing machine that had a 260mm filing disk (steel) with an edge of maybe 50mm depth, it had variable speed around 100-300 rpm. Would be a nice thing to have for big stuff!
And to digress terribly, the price of the top of the line Myford S7 was 3000SEK, today the same is 115,000SEK (Connoseur Long Bed). A calulator told me the equal value of 3000SEK is 31.598SEK today (£2885) Edited By Axel on 16/09/2010 06:35:09 |

Thanks thats great to see! I´ll make that one day for sure! I just met someone who can melt tons of metal at the time in his furnaces, so maybe I can make a scaled up model and have it as a sculpture in the garden...life is full of decisions! |

Went to look at a job offer today, the man is a friend of my dad real nice man. First thing I say was an old lathe in a corner covered with heavy dust and srcap of all kinds, very neglected. Took a step closer and idetified it right away, asked what he payed and where It came from: "from a university and it cost £455....is it good?" Yes its a Weiler Condor!

The die filer on the cover OF MEW 155 was made by me. It was made from a set of castings in aluminium which is the preferred material as one has been made locally in cast iron and the extra reciprocating weight had it leaping about like a kangaroo. If anyone wants I can supply a crude sketch showing the essential dimensions and photos of the patterns used. Best design I´ve seen so far, it really lit my "tool lust" that one! |

If the Editor allows I can reccomend a few texts on this subject, but I wont post them w/o consent, since they are gunbooks. The Editor removed links for such content before (and he has every right too). |

My point is that the barrel is the most hard to get part of a gun (its the most important part), and if you dont want too instruct people how to make them. It would be a good idea to not print articles that deals specifically about this, even though its a process that is useful for many other things than gunmaking!

Gawd people are trained to be so safe these days! C´mon let ppl be responsible for themselfs, If one thinks its unsafe, do it another way, don´t insult other peoples inteligence by telling everyone this or that is unsafe. Common sense, you´ve got it or you don´t, and if they dont they probably won´t learn from instructions! |
