Thread: Mini lathe 3 phase AC conversion |
02/06/2018 00:15:43 |
Hi Many and varied replies to this thread read through with great interest as an owner of several re powered and modified machines. Running any motor fitted with a cooling fan at way below it's rated speed will run hotter fit an auxiliary fan if this is a problem. Blowlamp has an excellent suggestion for a re power for the average home workshop machines. Eric |
Thread: Electric Motors |

Hi Raph You seem a little unsure of vee belt tension. You can do a rough check by pushing on a stationary belt with your thumb and be able to deflect the belt about 1 to 1.5 mm for every 100 mm shaft centres. Eric

Hi Raph Check that the motor bearings are not binding and the lathe turns freely. How big is the work you undertake. Large diameters and heavy cuts and feed rates will quickly use up available power. Being a DC motor Addict another alternative is AC To DC converter-speed controller driving a DC motor. One downside to single phase motors on a lathe is on another forum that i contribute to. The reply sums it up very well. Keep us posted on progress Eric

Thread: What's the best alternative to 'loctited' |
23/05/2018 01:32:20 |
Hi What is the best alternative to Loctite. Take more care when machining and make it fit properly!!! Not always look at the job in hand and formulate the best approach. Eric |
Thread: SC3 Headstock bearings |

"Does the plastic bearing cover have to be shimmed out to accommodate the extra width when fitting TRBs, if so by how much ?"
7206B is 17.25 mm wide 6206 is 16 mm wide Polish the spindle opposite the chuck under the bearing to a firm sliding fit to allow the preload to be set properly. Eric

Thread: Pressure as a unit of time |

When I was working, TIME = PRESSURE. in pressure terms, 0 Psi = breakfast at home, 70 Psi after the morning meeting, Mild panic at midday, no time for lunch. Most pressure came towards the end of the day at 300Psi so the clock was about right. Never thought of it in them terms:- working under time pressure, or pressured by time, lack of time pressure etc etc. Stew
Hi I made this to compensate for this by adding an unloader valve Happy being retired this device is working perfectly for me. Eric Edited By oldvelo on 26/04/2018 15:50:12 Edited By oldvelo on 26/04/2018 15:52:49 Edited By oldvelo on 26/04/2018 16:00:29 |
Thread: Advice on Belt Tensioners |

Hi this is one from my album of the Vee Belt clutch on my wood lathe
More pics in my album may be what you are looking for Not too clear thethe clutch lever goes just over centres and on to a stop that can just be made out in Pic 1 Edited By oldvelo on 12/04/2018 04:42:10 Edited By oldvelo on 12/04/2018 04:48:29 |
Thread: Tufnol (Textolite) as a material for pulley |
25/03/2018 21:06:21 |
Hi "Converting the drive to Poly-Vee would allow the use of much smaller pulley diameters." I agree with Michael Poly Vee drive is the way to go having converted 8 machines in the workshop. Aluminium being the material of choice for pulleys. No apparent wearing even on a very old drill press that came from a busy engineering workshop. Eric |
Thread: DC motor controler ? |
22/03/2018 02:30:34 |
Hi Carl Here is another link to a unit that may be useful. RS are way off with there description it is NOT AC to DC at all is is for a low power AC motor ( Extractor Fan)??? perhaps Set up seems to be straight forward enough with the controller to match the motor. Eric

Hi More info on the end use would be useful. Assumption is mother of all misunderstanding X1 Mill ? No connection with KB Electronics on my part just satisfied user Start looking here Expensive but very reliable More here using one from this source using one on a band saw.

Thread: Yet another bandsaw question |
16/03/2018 02:49:02 |
Hi Robin Looking at the photo and your description shows things to check. The bore of the pivot is not parralel to the mitre base of the casting the saw is mounted on or the bottom of the vice and the main frame casting the saw pivots on. Excess clearance on the saw frame pivot Bush? Check that what looks like there is two castings bolted together the vice casting and the base of the mitre and could be separated and shimmed to correct the error Unfortunately you will need to dismantle to check on a flat and true surface. This error should be able to be corrected with time and patience as You have identified the problem
Eric

Thread: Destroyed lathe |
24/01/2018 19:19:09 |
Hi Bazyle has is right normal pallet is totally inadequate to transport any lathe - mill other than a small bench top models. Build a timber frame that is Bolted through with large washers as nails can pull out easily.

Thread: Newton Tesla Electric Drives |

Hi JES Perhaps this is an intrusion But hopefully it will explain why "Single Phase Motors" run roughly and cause Chatter Marks when Machining. Had this explained to me on another forum To Quote Ken's Explanation I hope this will convince more out there that there are better alternatives to "Single Phase Motors" PS The Extra cooling fan is a great idea |
Thread: Lathe start-up speed best practice. |
07/12/2017 18:38:25 |
Hi I have been fiddling with variable speed DC drives for a number of years now and found that controllers that the ramp up to speed with variable adjustment will give the best service. Read the manual for your machine and follow the instructions there are far to many speed controllers out there to be able to offer a universal answer covering all. If you have deep pockets go for an industrial controller rated for higher power than the motor Horse Power. Properly adjust the settings to suit the motor then you can expect a long and trouble free life from it. |
Thread: LATHE BED SLIDE OIL |
06/12/2017 07:48:36 |
Hi Chainsaw bar oil has a "tackifier" additive to keep it hanging on even at very high speed. It sticks on very well on the vertical slides on my mill. The loading on a chainsaw links is extremely highly loaded compared with several Sq Cm of even a small lathe. Any oil is better than no oil. Oil Little and often and regular wipe down works best.

Thread: V Belt Conversion |
18/11/2017 18:29:09 |
Hi Ken Go for it a poly vee belt conversion is far superior to vee belts just look under the bonnet of any modern motor car. One disadvantage is that the alignment of shafts and pulleys has to be spot on. No problem it engineering we do isn't it. Converted my workshop drives to poly vee belts and no regrets on the Eight conversions so far. The will drive at much slower speeds and bigger ratios. Eric |
Thread: Material for swarf guards |

PolyCarbonate is the way to go it can be shaped in a sheet metal folder Protect with thin cardboard sheet no heating required. I have several for lathe and milling machine been in intermittent use for a number of years now.
