Thread: Milling a T slot ??
16/01/2019 08:32:17 | |
Hi, I am currently building the D & NY 2" scale Traction Engine. I am working on the rear axle brackets and need to mill the area where the axle block moves up and down. This is like a T slot. The area to be machined is 1 1/4" wide x 1" high and 2" long. The lip each side that makes it a T slot over hangs by 1/8" each side. (Hope this makes sense) My question is can I use a T slot cutter to machine this. Or is there another way. Thanks Garry

Thanks Jason, I think I will now go ahead and order a set of 8 DP 14 1/2 degree cutters. That info about the look of the teeth was helpful. And the rear axle is sprung. Thanks again for the help. Garry

Hi & Merry Xmas. This is a question about gear cutting. I want to cut my own gears for the first time. The plans says 8 DP with a pressure angle of 20 degrees. At the moment I can only find 14 1/2 degree cutters at a reasonable price. So can I use them with a bit of recalculation. Also, I've worked out that 8 DP is = to Module 3.175 is my calculation right. Thanks Garry
Thread: Machining cast iron

Thanks for the BBQ comment. What I will do now is leave the casting in fire overnight. See how it is tomorrow. The casting is the smoke box door, hence not a lot of metal can be removed. Quite right JasonB, I will not be sending the casting back.

Hi, I've tried both the brazed on tool bit and the indexable bits and both are giving problems. But I will try some heat and see what happens.

Hi, I've been trying to machine a casting of cast iron and I'm having difficulty getting started. The tool bits are getting blunt and I'm getting sparks. It just seems the more I try the harder the cast iron gets. I've read somewhere that you've got to get under the casting muck with the first cut. This seems to be alright in theory, but in practice it's more difficult. I also don't have a lot of spare metal to machine off. Can anyone give me some advice please. Garry
Thread: Name plates | |

Hi John, I'm not sure what size is right for this scale, but I would have thought somewhere between 1/2" to 3/4" high.

Hi, I would like to give my Traction Engine a name and was wondering if any body can tell me who makes the name plates in 2 in scale. Thanks Garry
Thread: non slotted screws

Ok thanks everybody for the tech input. I will now go ahead and use round head rivets right through the rim and hammer them into the counter sink. Thanks Garry

They are for the strakes. I don't want to rivet them from the inside with round head steel rivets. So I thought that I could use c/s non slotted screws from the outside into blind threaded holes. And no they will not be painted.

Thanks for all the different ideas but I forgot to mention that these are 5BA X 3/8 by two hundred of the little buggers. Cheers Garry

Thanks for that, but no, they are going into blind holes.

Hi, can anybody please give me some advice on how to screw in threaded non slotted counter sunk screws. I want to use these so that they look like rivets, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the last turn nice and tight. Thanks Garry
Thread: Broaching | |

Thanks for that info, I think I will now make up my own sleeves to go in the bores.

Hi, I would like to make some keyways in 3 sizes of bores. 1/2" 5/8" and 3/4" for the traction engine I am building. The drawings say 5/32 keyway broach for the 1/2" bore and 3/16" keyway broach for the 5/8" & 3/4" bores. My first question is, to save money can I use 3/16" on all 3 bores. There is only a small difference between the two sizes. And who sells the broaches and collars for these sizes. Thanks Garry Edited By Garry Coles on 05/08/2018 13:24:06

Thread: Steering chain

Thanks for info. I have just bought some welded 2 mm stainless steel chain from a company called S3i group, and the cost was £1.44 per meter. So this info might be of use to other people. Garry

Hi Does anyone know where I can buy some steering chain for my Durham & North Yorkshire engine in 2 in scale. I have tried Blackgates, and they said they have tried to find some, and have had no luck. All they can find is the unwelded link chain. Can anyone help me please. Thanks
Garry
