Cant resist the boast - 50 years subscribing this month!! 1st issue purchased, I think, about 2nd/3rd week June 1962 (still @ school), had a photo of a traction engine rally somewhere in the Midlands. It was weekly and about 1s3d (just 6p!) John |

Depending on area of the country, maybe it was all the chalk (Alkali) in water, `fighting` the acid. |

Thread: Newbie wondering about 5" loco's worth!?! |
04/05/2012 21:16:53 |
Hi John, Take as much detail/info as possible from Boiler Cert., contact issuer and verify details. This should show up any fraudulent/stolen cert. Maybe your next step could be to contact Police. If loco stolen and no/out of time cert., it will be much easier to sell with a "new" (forged) cert. If apparently OK, think about joining a club get advice preferably from more than just one member and maybe take one along with you to view loco. Another thing, better you go to venders home rather than other way round. You wouldn`t buy a car from someone parked in a layby with mobile phone, would you? Take care, not everybody is a crook but we never know who is till its too late!! Good luck,John. |
Thread: Boiler Cleaning |

Sorry, I typed SP in error - should have been SA JC |
02/05/2012 20:33:46 |
Beware! Somewhere I have read a discussion on various boiler cleaning chemicals where they warn that Sulphuric Acid causes the hard chalky deposits to undergo a chemical change, resulting in the deposit becoming even harder and more difficult to remove and resistant to further use of even very strong solutions of SP. Most toilet/drain cleaners contain either SP or Caustic Soda. I think it would be very wise to go for the more gentle Citric Acid and see what results. Rgds JC

Shaun, Give me as much info as possible, e.g., is it a Dewhirst drumswitch? and any names on motor, to enable me to compare with my setup. I can then tell you how mine is wired and its been going OK for years. Regards, John |

Speedy work in the pits is vital. I saw a time of 4.6 seconds. Quite what they did in that time I dont know as I was not properly paying attention btu just think, @ 200 MPH, that was a bit over a 1/4 mile! |

Thread: Drill press advice? |

NJH, Depends upon where you live, e.g., I am in Brighton. Brighton club has a Super 7, small mill, bench drill and an industrial size power hacksaw and a toolgrinder. Worthing club has an ML7, toolgrinder, floor type drill, tablesaw used for making track sleepers. I believe Chichester has a very comprehensive workshop including metal-casting facilities. Inland a bit, Beechurst (Haywards Heath) has a workshop and so I believe, Crawley. There ia always the SMEE, if you live in a reasonable travelling distance from South London. No doubt most clubs have some machinery. John

If you have some interrupted cutting jobs or very heavy machining, join a local model engineering club that has its own workshop and use their facilities. John |

Thread: Drill press advice? |
19/03/2012 00:07:55 |
Hullo again Chris, Just a couple of thoughts, 1. Get a decent drill vice big enough to hold likely size of work. 2. Bolt said vice down. Bolt it down! I used to think my drill vice was so heavy that I could "get away with it" when using small(ish) drills. The 3/16" drill jammed and turned work and vice round, haing snatched handle out of my hand, drill snapped vice chucked off table! I now always use a minimum of one bolt to hold vice to table. Good luck in your search and take care - all machinery is potentially dangerous. John |

Hi Chris, I have got a bench model Fobco Star drill. What a massively built job! Believe it weighs as much as the Myford. Two men struggled to get it in to my car but I managed it single-handed from car to bench. Just dont ask.... Am well pleased with it. |
