Yes I do have a WM14, sorry I should have put that on my first post.

I've had trouble before by being too ambitious with a slitting saw. The gears survived but the motor was totally destroyed.

I need to cut a trough in mild steel (EN1A leaded) with a 1/2" end mill. What depth of cut should I be aiming for.

May I congratulate Terrence Holland on his excellent well researched articles on the battlefields of WW I. The statistics were fascinating and thought provoking. You can see why it was called the Great War with the millions of munitions that were fired and that has left a legacy that still has a devastating impact on today.

Is small (1/4 - 6mm) I section metal available or will I have to machine it out of square bar.

Of course a tolerance is important. You are introducing a tolerance when you say "a good sliding fit" . It is no different than saying ± 0.002" from a given dimension. By stating a tolerance you do away with making something by "trial and error"

With a micrometer, lock the spindle at the required reading and with a nylon hammer, not metal as this damages the paint work on the frame, tap the mic until it fits on the piece being measured. The number and strength of blows indicate how much interference there is.

It was built from plans I found on t'internet. It was originally published in The World of Model Engineering a now defunct magazine. The barrel is just "doable" on a mini lathe with 80mm chuck and fixed steady.

The barrel length is 4 13/16"

Jason, OK if they buy a digital mic but someone posted on the forum that they had problems reading a mic and suggested such an article.

I am toying with the idea of writing an article about how to read a micrometer for the absolute beginner but unsure whether to submit it to ME, MEW or the Forum

The 5 Laws of Engineering.

1) Work expands to fill the time available

2) Any electric motor first installed always rotates in the wrong direction.

3) Any pipe cut to length will be too short

4) Inter changeable parts won't

5) Any errors no matter how small add up to cause maximum damage.

On the steam chest cover (ME4569 p.424 fig9) the dimensions for the holes add up to 1 3/4" but the plate is only 1 1/2 long. Should the 3/8" measurement be from the side of the plate and not from the 1/8" measurement.
