Thread: Stoptober

Norm

I spend a fair amount of my life telling people the reasons to quit but everyone has the right to choose.

the wisdom of the choice made sometimes surprises but.... Similar arguments for legalizing cannabis, heroin etc ( which actually kill far fewer people each year than either smoking or booze as a matter of interest )

Everyone has to die of something but why anyone would want to increase their chances of ending up brain dead etc escapes me. You can never win the argument but as one of my old professors used to say " you can't win, you can't even break even but you cant quit the game"

glad you conquered the weed and hopefully some more will read , learn and benefit One can but hope.

keep up the good work

Ian

Thread: Scroll saw advice
30/09/2016 21:03:13

John

can't tell you if they are the same model but I'm delighted with my Hegner. Build quality is superb. Good wood working reviewed all the scroll saws on the market years ago and said Hegner were " the rolls Royce of scroll saws". They re-did the review a couple of years back and (even though the price had significantly risen still said Hegner were clearly the best.

I can only agree having used it to cut 1.5 inch thick mild steel on one occasion( slow but it did it with lots of lubricant!). It was a complicated shape and I couldn't face cutting it by hand.blush

Speed control is fantastic on it, but an awful lot depends upon the blade quality. Again I use Hegner bladesand they're great but not cheap.

I have non regrets about going with Hegner.

To answer the original posting title BECAUSE I COULD angel

Often find inspiration from you lot on line or by consulting the Oracle's of Mad modder if the answer isn't immediately available.

Never let SWMBO know you're infallible ! She may suspect it but absolute denial is one of the strongest male traits and should be deployed whenever challenged by senior management. wink

film pots ( remember them) for mixing flux and small batches of epoxy.

Rather than New Skin get some spray plaster, once muck is cleaned off you can rapidl;y cover the area and it's painless(unlike new skin!). Steri strips are useful to seal deep cuts quickly then a plaster over the top.

I keep iodine spray (brands are savlon dry or Betadine spray) in the workshop for rapid antiseptic cover.

Friends nicknames and ages make good passwords and are harder to forget! Enemies nicknames are even better!

Thread: Meet Up at Doncaster!
05/06/2016 23:33:47

Like John S , I was there all 3 days. For the first time in living memory (mine anyway) Friday was pleasant ie enough space to move about and chat to people without being shoulder charged by people desperate to get to a bargain!

Marshalling for the car park needed sorting on Friday but this was done by Saturday. Lighting seemed OK to me but I agree about signage- so much betting shop signage hanging about the tv screens updating you were generally ignored. Although its further ( Harrogate being on my door step almost) I would definitely go again.

It needed bigger signs at the doors to tell you about upstairs perhaps.

Well done the Rex family and helpers!

I'm even more embarrassed to admit _ I too have a swivel vice been maturing under the bench since I moved house ( 18 years ago), it lives next to the "roundtoit". blush

got a couple of bar stools but comfy chair with large cushion is best for contemplation, coffee, cake etc. I have a magnifying lamp I have got to get round to installing near the workbench but get round to is the operative phrase !

Foam mat / old carpet on the floor adds comfort and protection to dropped tools, not that any of you would be as careless of course......

to get it to flow into narrow gaps I use a hair drier ( got no use for it otherwise). Works well for wing joining tubes in model gliders .

Generally I just put in a plastic bag on top of the hot water tank and leave overnight. If you ever want to get it off heat to about 200 and it softens. I only use the 24 hour stuff as the 5 minute tends to soften and flex a bit aftera few years.

Thread: Are dogs clever or stupid?

try garlic rosaries on the door handles ... seems to work with mother in law...devil

We now never feed ours liver after a serious of unfortunate effects( and a lot of cleaning up the mess).

Not sure about Shepherds as ones I've known like to bark on principle just to watch people jump. Best thing I ever did was buy loads of tennis balls ( ex tennis club) as they still have a lot of bounce ( as do the collies) and ,with a decent ball thrower, make walkies really fun. Still have to watch 'em as the art of "Poo rolling" is a favorite trick. Fox poo it seems is a great delicacy as merits really rubbing it in. Needless to say the bath room needs a good clean, as the dog(s) sulk.

20/04/2016 23:41:11

got 2 dogs, one pure border collie ( excitable, fast and thick ),others a lab /collie cross ( loyal, friendly but lethal to rabbits etc , etc and loves herding cows!)

Local farmer(s) delighted at having cows retrieved if necessary and reduction in rabbit population.

Don't know how but about 5 minutes before I get home they know and wait at gate. Doesn't matter whether I'm late or early they go to gate 5 mins before I get home. There is no way they can detect the car that early ( I'm on A1M !) but wife swears it's uncanny.

Effective guard dogs as well, very friendly whilst we're about, but had a hire car collected once and keys were in "safe place". Unfortunately I was out so got a call asking were keys behind gate as dog's were out . One guarded gate whilst other patrolled perimeter in case the collection men tried to get around! Don't know why they hate red post vans, other colours no issues but a red van and all hell breaks loose.

They get me out and about and wouldn't be without them.

De tente exists between them and our 2 cats. They chase others but leave ours alone so you have the bizarre site of a ginger cat and 2 dogs coming down the drive to greet you. Dogs have even been known to chase off a neighbors' cat that attacked one of ours and deter their dogs.

Thread: Queen street mill,Burnley- worth a trip
31/03/2016 20:21:30

If anyone has a wish to see a well maintained compound mill engine running 300 looms then I heartily recommend Queen street mill, Burnley BB 10 2 HX as an excellent place to visit. They do provide ear defenders for you when in the weaving shed. Well laid out place with free parking .

They have a good tea room and very very reasonable prices both for food and admission.

Go soon as it may close in September 2016 .Visit their web site to check when the engine is running . They are really friendly and helpful.

Be warned however TOM TOM sat nag takes you into the back of beyond en route from Yorkshire. It really is worth the trip. I have no connection with them apart from as a very happy visitor who went with No1 son today.
